    My favourite detail about _Waiting On A Miracle_ is that she ends up doing all of those things. Moving the mountains, helping Isabella learn how to grow new trees and flowers, healing what's broken, showing the family something new, and shining like the rest of the family shines... everything she complains that she can't do, she ends up doing. _Except_ keeping down the unspoken invisible pain, because that's not healthy or good.

    Actually, Luisa isnt the eldest child but the middle sister, as Isabella is the oldest. This also means, that Isabella as the oldest has to face similar if not more pressure than Luisa (also because Alma/Abuela watches Isabella closely), but it also highlights that Luisa as middle child often gets overlooked and feels like she´s not useful if she doesnt work. Middle Children often get ignored, so it must be hard for Luisa to overwork herself constantly just to get the recognision she needs.

  • @aquarini8756
    @aquarini8756 4 месяца назад +34

    i believe that bruno's prophecies, except for isabella and dolores, are all misinterpretations of what bruno says. For example:
    - the woman whose fish dies: pets eventually die.
    - the gut man: if he ate too much, he was going to grow a gut
    - the bald man: most men end up bald.
    it's not really rocket science
    But with Peppa and Felix's wedding there is something more complicated:
    I am not Colombian, but I am from Ecuador (neighboring country) and I have heard that when it rains in events like quinceañeras or weddings, it means luck, but also saying that it is going to rain is a way of saying that a couple is not going to last.
    So it is possible that Peppa misinterpreted Bruno wishing him luck (I feel that Bruno is not very good socially)

    • @SilverGallowglass
      @SilverGallowglass 4 месяца назад +14

      Not to mention that the jar she has that fish in is too small and it could have been sick, that might not have been a prophecy so much as a warning that the conditions you have that fish in are going to kill it, you might want to put it in a better container.
      I completely agree about Pepa's wedding, Bruno was making a joke about rain given traditional superstitions (that other little brothers can make without issue and because Bruno is superstitious it makes it even more likely) or trying to awkwardly wish luck and she freaked out because she thought it was a prophecy and then because she is Pepa, boom storm.

    • @Psychoinnocent
      @Psychoinnocent 4 месяца назад +15

      I mean he says it in “All of You” - he saw Pepa was nervous and made a joke that landed badly (“That wasn’t a prophecy/ I could just see you were sweating!) which then caused her to freak and storm 😢

    Couple fun facts!
    After watching a wide variety of reactors including ones from South America, I learned that accordions are actually featured prominently in music from the country this is set it, which is Colombia.
    Also, contrary to most assumptions, Luisa is actually not the oldest sister! She is actually the middle child, but she was treated as the most capable and responsible member due to the fact that her “gift” is very utilitarian and the only gift that is really helpful to the villagers in day-to-day life. This is actually something that I relate to quite a bit, as I am also the middle child and the “strongest”.
    Also, Disney initially made a bunch of Isabella merch, but when the movie came out, Luisa was a much more popular character so they had to quickly make more merch of her. They were expecting all the kids to be super excited about the “princess” character, but so many people loved and related to Luisa that it was actually quite funny to watch.

  • @lillilake
    @lillilake 4 месяца назад +43

    Yes! Finally the love and recognition Surface Pressure deserves! It's my favorite too! The lines that hit me the most are:
    "I think I might be worthless if I can't be of service" that feeling of doing selfless acts, and feeling like there's no you outside of that, or rather you're nothing without your deeds really hits hard. It can almost make a person feel selfish for doing good things because it feels more like a preservation of identity and image instead of a genuine altruism which just increases the guilt. Just patching a hole with more holes.
    "Give it to you sister it doesn't hurt and see if she can handle every family burden/watch as she buckles and bends but never breaks, no mistakes" Just imagining all the times people speculate, even if she struggles a little bit, anyone watching is just like, "eh, it's Luisa, I'm sure she's fine" and never just getting asked if she's okay before? Absolutely heartbreaking.
    And like Mortius pointed out, " give it to your sister and never wonder if the same pressure would have pulled you under" like not only the fact that the work she does would put someone else in the ground, but that no one even considers her when they make her do it. Like sure she's proven she can and she's willing, but no one even thinks about her like a person anymore. Just another hardworking donkey.

      I also love that no one is evil, what alma did to her family eas terrible, but she is still treated with empathy, there was no maliciousness, she was deeply traumatised and had no one to lean on, nor any opportunity to heal, but she still gets called out ad needing to change.... It hits a very beautiful balance. Being well meaning is not an excuse for hurting others, but also, hurting others often is the opposite of the intention.... This is the first and only disney move with a real problem and the real solution to it. Empathy and communication, no magic needed for the true conflict.
      Julietta and augustine are wellmeaning and loving too, but they still missed how all 3 of their children where miserable since they where to busy ... Isabella and mirabel took out their frustraitions on each other in a lack of other options.... Everyone had a part in making the situation worse

    So, Calypso music mostly comes from the Caribbean islands. It originated in Trinidad and Tobago during the early to mid-19th century and spread to the rest of the Caribbean Antilles by the mid-20th century. Fun fact: Calypso evolved into a way of spreading news around Trinidad, and many islanders considered these songs the most reliable news source. Calypso singers pushed the boundaries of free speech as their lyrics spread news of any topic relevant to island life, including speaking out against political corruption. Sex, scandal, gossip, politics, local news, and insulting other calypso singers were the order of the day in classic calypso, *just as it is today with classic hip-hop.* And just as the hip-hop of today, the music sparked shock and outrage in moralistic sections of society.

    A lot of this story is stuff you would absolutely have found in any real family, like sister dynamics and cousins and so forth. But, this is also most definitely a case of how generational trauma can shape entire families. Every last magical power is tied to an element of trauma/coping with it, from Peppa's moodswings being a result of trying to keep a sunny disposition at the expense of her own feelings to Bruno being the scapegoat because he's the one to point out bad news- which Abuelita Alma desperately stamps out whenever she sees it. Mirabel becoming the NEW scapegoat is especially painful; her not getting a special power was a living, walking, breathing sign of imperfection in the family, and in a family where the head treats a family member as 'less than' or "the problem", everyone else tends to fall into line with them- well-intentioned or otherwise.
    Isabela is a fascinating study on the pressure of daughters to Be Perfect creating resentment at having to swallow who they REALLY are, and how it manifests by being taken out on others- especially the family black sheep, like Mirabel. I'm really happy at how they handle her story.
    Also, did you notice that "Waiting On A Miracle", Mirabel's main song, is 3/4 time, while every other song is 4/4? Like she's the one out of step with the others? Or that even when she's in a 4/4 song, she's prone to chaining notes in triplets? (In The Family Madrigal, this comes out in the last portion while she dodges answering questions about herself). I wonder why she's associated with the number 3? With triplets? Hmmmm :3c
    Looking forward to seeing the latter half of your reaction to this movie! It's one of my favorites for personal reasons, which... hoo boy.

    i would slightly rephrase referring to all latin music as one genre. There are so many genres of music that encompass “latino music”. Even pressure has aspects of regeton that others song dont have and i think its an over generalization to say that all latin music has 1 sound. I can tell yall are a bit unfamiliar with latin music lol

    Someone said this in a reply but i feel like i should bring this to the main comments:
    You guys seem like you'd really enjoy the Hatchetfield musical saga! They're up on youtube for free so you won't have much issue with copyright. In order they are Guy who Didn't Like Musicals, Black Friday, Nightmare Time(seasons 1&2, 7 episodes total), Nerdy Prudes Must Die (+a short film, Working Boys that came out most recently).
    If you dont want to watch the whole show the comments can fill you in on the pertinent lore you'd need for the show.

    6:55 The house is one of the best characters in the movie.
    10:04 I mean, Anton Chekov was a Russian guy, so you weren't wrong.
    11:39 Specifically, 1950's Columbia.
    16:13 Man, that kid is savage!
    21:08 Everyone else in her family except one. Abuella also has no gift.
    28:17 This one is probably my favorite song in the movie. And the donkeys are hilarious throughout. Also, did you notice that the door that Isabella was struggling to hold up is her own?
    34:21 Mirabel is very much the heart of the family. Much like her Abuella.

    Surface Pressure is also my favorite. It’s probably the first time a Disney song talks honestly about self image (“I’m pretty sure I’m worthless if I can’t be of service”) and anxiety in such a forward way. Living for the new generation of Disney movies addressing the generational trauma and issues that come from pushing down emotions. Disney out here healing the grownups inner children while giving new generation some sweet bops about expressing your feelings. ❤

    Interesting how surface pressure you relate to as the eldest. I relate to it as the youngest. My 2 older sisters will throw money at problems but it's me and my husband that have to visit my mum twice a week. Have to take her shopping. Have to sort things out for her. My husband has to do all the gardening and heavy lifting ect. (Now I can understand why my middle sister can't as she lives 5hr drive away but my eldest sister is the same distance of 30mins away from my mum.)

      I also think it depends on the dynamics as you grew up affecting how you interact as adults.
      My mom put a lot of pressure on me to care for my younger siblings and to pick up the household duties and now as an adult we don't speak often. We didn't speak when she lived 15min away and we don't speak now that we're hours away. My younger siblings are in charge of the communication with her.

      I like the added layer of horror, that both the situation of luisa, the middle child, who had to put in all the effort while the actual oldest is treated like a trophy, is horrible and she drowns under the expectationd, but also tgr horror of the younger, just realising the strain, seing her struggle and having no clue what to do to help or make it in thr slightest better... Both experience powerlessness....
      Every family is different, most often one of the older getd stuck with all tge tesponsabilities, the mifdle chilfren are invusable and the youngest doted on ot mastly raised by their siblings...
      I was the mediator and emotional support of my family since I was very young though

    First, I like the way this is set up. You had enough time to break things down without dragging it out. Personally, I’m crazy enough to sit and listen to you do a full reaction to each and every song, but I know that’s not really feasible, so this is a great compromise.
    Second, as the oldest of three, Luisa is my GIRL! I relate to her so hard, especially since I was also put into the gifted programs and given responsibility at church… the expectation to hold everything together is real. The pressure is so real.
    Thank you for doing this one, I absolutely love it, and I can’t wait to see Casper see whether he was right or wrong. 🥰

    accordions are one of colombian music intruments bases, yes, they were not invented here, however they are the base of almost our traditional music, and surface pressure is indeed the least colombian yet, but it does have elements of cumbia - our most recognizeble autochthonous music genre - and reggaeton - a PR genre that is hugely popular here in Colombia and we are currently like the second or third country that produces the msot reggaeton music and artist, Karol G/Maluma/Jbalvin being the main ones globally.
