- Champaign gets their name from their hometown of Champaign, Illinois with charter members Micheal Day, Leon Reeder, Michael Reed and Dana Walden. Vocalists Pauli Carman and Rena Jones soon joined the band just in time for their golden moment, "How 'Bout Us" a 1 Adult Contemporary song for two weeks, peaking at #12 pop and #4 R&B.
The song was recorded in a number of various styles until it approached the version that was finally released, the gossamer dream of a song floated into the consciousness of the radio listeners all over the world. The next single, "Can You Find The Time" missed the charts entirely but two years later "Try Again" hit the charts #6 AC, #23 pop and #2 R&B but failed to maintain their momentum and the band broke up in 1985.
Betty Wright and Grayson Hugh released their version of "How Bout Us" in 1990, peaking at #15 AC, #67 pop and #30 R&B. Pauli went on to work in the supergroup Asia and Reeder went on to work with Chicago.

I remember when I would turn on the radio at night in my room and listen to all the love songs that were played after 10 pm. I still remember the soft glow of light from my radio /record player/8track player that filled my room and the small red light indicating that I was enjoying this song in stereo sound. Good times, great memories great music!

I just turned age 13 in March 1981 and recall buying the 45 record at Woolworth's in the mall. I loved disco roller skating to it too 🛼. I still own this 45 record 🧡💛🖤.

This song was on a compliation CD of smooth hits I used to play at the nursing home I worked at while residents had their lunch. It was a nice break from all the 20s and 30s songs that played constantly. You can't beat those early 80s R&B/jazz flavored songs!

A few suggestions: international gems: Pino D'Angio with "Ma Quale Idea" (1980), The Maisonettes with "Heartache Avenue" (1982)
Dutch & Flemish gems: Rob de Nijs with "Zondag" (1979/80), Johan Verminnen with "'k Voel me Goed" (1981), Kamiel with "Me Wuf is Weg" (1982) and "Linda" performed by Frank Boeijen (1983) => I think it would be very funny - even for an international audience - to hear these songs / tracks in an extended version (especially Kamiel would be very nice & funny to hear) 😀
