Apparently you don't need armour stands and weapon racks. They're purely decorative and nobles want them, says the game
(Which is counter intuitive but, hey, that's dwarf fortress)
Instead I just have a nearby stockpile and fill it withweapon, armour and ammo bins

When you assign more than one item for the chest (in your example, chain shirt and breastplate) they will wear them both and actually give more protection. I believe the yellow color is because they have partly equipped that slot (Inod in your example has the breastplate, but not the chain shirt). In the wiki there is a whole section on how and what you can layer in your squad (for example, you should have leather mittens in addition to gauntlets)

I will have to look into this! I don’t think I’ve seen my dwarves equip both mail shirt and breastplate. I have seen them wearing clothes/leather under the armor though! Thanks for the tip, I’ll definitely go do some testing

I'm pretty sure yellow means that an item in the fortress is reserved by the dwarf, but they have not equipped it yet. Sometimes they never do. Like I'm pretty sure they cannot equip mail AFTER they have equipped a breastplate. They have to equip the mail first. Gear equipping, like many things with military, is kinda janky.

@@chazdomingo475 very janky, thanks for that insight! This games so complicated, even when you think you understand it, there’s 7 different ways to do what you’re wanting lol

I read a lot of the wiki and for someone like me who's only ever got one actually reasonable military running for 1 out of 3 forts as I started nearly a month ago so what I understood and reasoned may be wrong.
      It's all about "equipment size"
You can equip multiple clothing for a single slot, so long as they're on the same "layer" and thier collective size doesn't hit the "permit limit".
"Layers" are separated into 4, under, over, armour, and cover.
Under: shirts, tunics, gloves and thongs
Over: trousers, robes, mailshirt and togas
Armour: gauntlet, breastplates (leather armour too), leggings, greaves and boots
Cover: Mittens and probably something else (there aren't a lot of covers)
Armour can only be occupied by one item and one alone so you can't have leggings and greaves at the same time
(Dabbling wordsmith) Dwarves can't "add-on" a "under" clothing if an "over" or higher clothing is in same slot.
For example, they won't wear socks if they found thier boots first, they won't wear mailshirt if they are wearing a breastplate already _in the way._ If they manage to wear things in the right order, it's fine.
According to the wiki, one can wear 2 mailshirts under a breastplate or 3 discarding the breastplate and among other slots like a helm over 2 veils.
While pretty damn cool, do remember encumbrance is a problem.
It's pretty damn complicated and I am NOT qualifed to talk in detail about this. I am merely informing all of you the existence of such a mechanic and that there exists information on it.

Nice, didn't know you have to choose the color too for the gear, I think it could/should be put on Any Colour by default.

Anyone seen this bug where a dwarf literally _levitates_ in the air?
1 of the 4 forgotten beasts that came is on the 1nd cavern alone.
Made of salt, it flies and swims, the verticality of the cavern isn't much like 4-5 z lvls. I station my elites close to the shore. I look around trying to keep track of the beast. Then, lo-and behold, my hammerlord is just floating 2 z levels above and 8 units NW from where he's suppose to be, "destination unreachable" and he's just stuck there.
He practically became sitting (levitating?) Duck as he gets pommel until he's unconscious. At which point, he fell into the pool below and started drowning but that didn't matter as the beast came down actually spent a short while chewing on the body. My hammerlord did not once try to fight back and it seems like he never dodged either despite the 9 "miss attacks"

      @dragnus12 Год назад +1

Was he next to a wall? He might have been climbing at some point. There is also a stamina system, though you dont really get to know it outside of adventure mode. So he may have started climbing for one reason or another, ran out of stamina to continue climbing, but had enough left to hold position until it drained or, as in your case, was attacked. You cant order your dwarves to make a move that would involve climbing, but they may do so as part of their automatic pathing to whatever they want to do. Its very weird.
