Dude I just gotta say, I always LOVE your videos. They are always criminally underrated and under viewed, but just know you make great stuff and I'm loving every video!
Thanks again my friend. This subject is actually more significant than first realized. In the commotion of actual gameplay, its easy to get confused (depending on amount of PCs) what the status of battle evolves into. For this reason, on occasion I've run a few practice sessions prior to gameplay (with just me) to gauge the 'flow' of conflicts, when I know a complicated battle is forthcoming in a session.. This cuts down on the pauses and interruptions needed to crunch numbers and keep track of who is doing what, when and how, making for a smoother fight. It's not "cheating" because my objective is NOT to kill all my Player's Characters, it's to ensure they have a fun filled event without me flipping through a book, breaking the tempo. It also enables me to gauge if I'm setting them up for a TPK or a scenario where they are gonna steam-roll my BBEG. Both of which, can crush an evenings mood. :)
I would like to submit Alyxian the Apotheon for this list as well, since you as a DM are challenged to roleplay him effectively for his payoff, as well as having the three phases akin to Auril. Not only that, but there is also the effects the players can do by appealing to him with Persuasion checks or praying at his shrines to halt his lair actions
agreed, I ran the final encounter with him a while ago, it was a lot to process in the fight, but very fun because the module made sure I knew the charcater well so decision making was fairly intuitive for me
I'm gonna be a 1st-time DM soon, and the module me and my group have decided on for me to run was.. Descent into Avermus. You can imagine my look of horror seeing I am immediately gonna have to figure out one of the most challenging statblocks in the entire game 😅
I was like "hmm this voice reminds me of a lore and discussion video creator from World of Warcraft and low and behold I knew it "hirumared" xD Just subscribed here too.
I agree with all of these creatures on the list. But i do believe that many more could be added. Strictly speaking due to adding the idea of personalities and history of the NPC’s. The sheer amount of RP that all of these creatures come with make them even more deeply complicated to run. Taken this into consideration the list would have been a bit more rearranged for me. But still a great list overall. Thank you for the video
Among the lower CR monsters characters even a low-level or low mid-level party can well encounter, I think hags (especially Night and Annis Hags) deserve at least an honorable mention.
Whenever an NPC is worlds more cunning than any standard human person, the limits of the NPC's cleverness is set by the peak real-life mental stats of the DM. You need a (not memeing here promise) 150 IQ DM with a philosophy degree to play some of the coolest enemies truly "lore accurate." Always becomes a challenge to do extraordinarily intelligent and/or wise things justice I've found while DMing. The extraordinary empathy needed to fully embody/deeply love and care for the mindset of an... Elder Brain, for example, is a big ole' puzzle.
i would gladly see a video about the most interesting enemies to fight. We can talk here about most complex, or most dangerous creatures, but i wonder How fun some encounters can be if they are Utilized Smart by GM
Wait, sorry if I'm late to the game on this, but is this a Hirumaredx alt channel? You're choice sounds identical lol; just threw me off so hard when I clicked the link XD
I mean, archdevils and demon lords are things you shouldn't be fighting or dealing with unless you're level 20+. And Auril is a literal deity. Meaning that you really shouldn't even be attempting to fight these things and confrontations should be handled with either a "RUN FOR YOUR LIFE" or catastrophic display of superior power.
What about Lolth, the Demon Queen of Spiders? She is both a treater goddess (well, after transforming herself from a lesser/morin deity into a greater deity during her "Silence", that is), and a demon lord, who rules the 66th layer of the Abyss, which comprises the Demon Web, and the Demon Web Pits.
The problem is not a creature. The problem is the game trying to complicate combat. Action. reaction. movement. ect..... While one does all this the other has to basically allow it in order to make it realistic. LOL.
Did this man just say that radiant damage is suboptimal it's the second-best damage type and has some of the best spells in the game guiding bolt it first and sickening radiance at 4th and arguably one ot th best spells in the game spirit guardians
it's great until you end up having to use it on a foe that is resistant to it. If you didnt have to use it on Zariel, or she wasnt resistant to it, it wouldnt be so bad. But with both having to take place, it makes it bad for that encounter.
Honestly unless you're running spelljammer I rate radiant as the best damage type in the game (mathematically magical bludgeoning is best but when you take into account which creatures are immune/resistant it's pretty much zariel or angels, and unless you are playing in an evil campaign you usually don't fight angels)

My guess for number 1. A full caster that can summon more casters that have casting.
So a druid (not the cr2 monster)
@@ADT1995 Any lv 20 full caster.
close - it was number 10
Does Drow rhyme with crow? I thought it rhymed with wow.
Of course it rhymes with Crow, that's why they fled underground so none of them could get confused due to unclear pronounciation anymore
It rhymes with wow, this guy is the only person I know of who disagrees.
Either is right. Bob Salvatore pronounces Drow like "wow", but I have also heard other Drow experts pronounce it the other way.
How now evil drow.
It depends if you are doing it how dnd does, or how mythology does @@ConcerninglyWiseAlligator
The first adventure I ever ran as DM was Curse of Strahd. I was in way over my head with the titular vampire's stat block.
I was like "Where have I heard your voice before..." and then I realized!
Cool to have randomly stumbled upon one of your either channels :^)
I thought your pronounciation of " Drow" was painful until i heard you say " Lolth" 😂
My god he just kept saying it over and over
Drow, Drow, Drow, your boat😂
Barely made it through the tenth number I was so infuriated
The official D&D rhymes with cow, but rhyming with low is more consistent with the pre-D&D Gaelic pronunciation
Misspelling or mispronouncing words is a tried-and-true engagement bait technique.

i watch ur manalogs channel and when i clicked this video i wasnt expecting that same voice and style but was pleasantly surprised lol, love ur vids
Love learning about different creatures in dnd. Hope you make more videos about different kinds of creatures in the future

7:34 if I’m concentrating, and enter the field but then exit it, is my spell just gone?
Nope, the spell continues, it just doesnt have any effect while in the antimagic cone

I was thinking of hard to run RP-wise. Like how can you play paranoia like a beholder or the alien mentality or a reptile?
I really like your videos, but your pronunciation of Drow is driving me nuts...

“Yeah that tracks”
I need the music playing in the background of the matron segment, please someone
I’m both sad and happy I am only just finding this channel now ;-;
you could make a video about the creatures in Minsc and Boo's Journal of Villainy. They are so unique and complex, I love Dagryn the lost

Audio error in the last second of the video, as it fades out. No worries or anything, just wanted you to know. Love your videos btw LOL
P sure Zariel is not the most powerful archdevil, I’m assuming you mean the most powerful written one?
Belashyra the mother/God of the beholder's. Uses everyone's eyes for eye rays.

If you look up a pronunciation guide from back in the day Dragon Magazine you’ll find the way he is saying it is perfectly acceptable.
Everything I googled popped up Drau.

Antimagic beams only work when the Beholder is aware of the effect working. Problem solved.
Time to run all 10 in one dungeon

Do you also have a wow channel? The voice is so familiar...
He has channels for WoW, Yugioh, D&D, MtG, and Hearthstone.
Why do you say Drow wrong?
I’m no joke, looking forward to my Rime Campaign XD my players are not ready for the amount of BS in it

Curses are so annoying. I hate wasting a spell spot on something so niche. Especially in a smaller 4 man group.
Dro?
Bro
Lol I love your videos but definitely need to look up some pronunciations… drow, Lolth, recesses, archdevils, hierarchy.
Most complicated monster in 5e? BXCMI hivebrood points and laughs at 5e. ;-)
Oop, playing curse of strahd, gotta skip him.
Opp, playing Descent into avernus, don't wanna metagame.
Niv-Mizzet.
I'm sorry HAD to cringe everytime you said Drao, like Droe
I have always heard it pronounced Drow, as in cow
What is a Droo and why did you call Auril, oral 😂
slaadi have been ignored. hwat?
Cadavar collectors
I hate the way you say drow
False hydra....ugh
its drow... pronounced draw..... its weird but pease
