Taipei Story [青梅竹馬 (Qing mei zhu ma) literally: "green plums and a bamboo horse" ] directed by Edward Yang
Music: Current Joys - A Different Age
    Lyrics:
Oh, you don't know me 'cause I'm from a different age
And you can't see me 'cause I live in a different age
And you could hurt me but you wouldn't know what to say
But you should believe me, our dreams are all the same
    Like a life without love
    God, that's just insane
    But a love without life
Well, that just happens every day
And I wish I could change, but I'll probably just stay the same
And I wish you could sing along
But this song is a joke
And the melody I wrote, wrong!
    Oh you can't hear me
'Cause I sing to a different age
    And you should fear me
'Cause I believe in a different age
But I live in a city
That lives in a different age
Oh I live in a city
That lives in a different age
Where all the punks are writing memoirs
    And I'm still singing songs
Oh all the punks are writing memoirs
    And I'm still singing songs
They say: "there's nothing left for you here, kid
Why don't you just go home"
They say: "this city is useless
and we've already done it all"
Oh all the punks are writing memoirs
    And I'm still singing songs
And I wish you could sing along
But this song is a joke and the melody I wrote,
    wrong!

This film has two different titles:
its Chinese title is: "Qing mei zhu ma", an idiomatic phrase coined by poet Li Bai that means “Green plum, bamboo horse”, an oblique reference to a couple whose love has emerged out of childhood games and trivia.
It is applied by director Edward Yang ironically for the film’s two main characters: Lung (taiwanese New Wave filmmaker Hou Hsiao-hsien, *you can watch a video about "Millennium Mambo" on my channel) and Chin (Tsai Chin) are long-time sweethearts who are excruciatingly distant from each other.
Internationally the film is known instead as "Taipei Story", an apparent reference to Yasujirō Ozu’s "Tōkyō Monogatari" (Tokyo Story, 1953), a film that, like "Taipei Story", explores a nation and city’s marked departure from traditional values.
"The film’s separate titles illuminate two distinct yet overlapping truths about Yang’s masterful Taiwanese New Wave film". (Nicholas Bugeja - Senses of Cinema)

Beautiful. Just finished the movie and this is a fitting tribute. Almost feels like Lung, who's trapped in the nostalgic past, is screaming "I live in a different age." Thank you.

I watched your new edit and came here to watch this edit again. I haven't watched this movie yet, but I used to live in Taipei. I wasn't born in the era in which the film came out at that time. Taipei city and the people have changed a lot from the 80s to now.
But damn, this edit and music gave me so much nostalgia. I came back to watch this so many times because it just reminded me of all my favourite moments in Taiwan and made me miss my family a lot!
Just wanna say thank you for making this edit. And keep up the good work. Your edits and music tastes are always so lovely!!

i have a question, was chin cheating?

    • @Clarencito
      @Clarencito  4 года назад +10

Maybe there was something with her ex-colleague at work, but i don't think that's the focus of the movie.
In my opinion Yang wanted to portrait a fracture in the 80' taiwanese society.
One side still attached to the old tradition (like Lung and Chin's father).
The other instead understood the changing of times, the end of an era and is ready to leave seeking a better (?) life (Chin).
She puts all her hopes on Lung (under the promise of moving to the Usa) but he let her down, once again, because he really doesn't want to leave his motherland (because he hates modern capitalist society), which he still love (in fact he uses all his money trying to help his friend and Chin father)

    • @noeltolive
      @noeltolive 4 года назад

@@Clarencito oh thanks for clarifying that, i understood it wasnt the focus, i just wanted to make it clear. also was Lung cheating too?

    • @Clarencito

@@noeltolive he went to tokyo to meet with that other girl, without telling Chin. But the movie don't clarify on that, because It doesn't really matter. It Is enough to make you understand that there is unresolved problems whitin the couple.
By the way, if you read my pinned comment, there's also an interesting fact about the title of the movie.

@@Clarencito yeah ive read it, thanks again. i was just confused about what's going on but i get the "real" issue of the movie. I got hooked to edward yang's movies these days after binge-watching wong kar-wai's films. Much love from Philippines.
