What do you think of longer videos? I remember a lot of you asking for more playing in my vids, so that's gonna make the episodes a bit more lengthy! What do you think??
ThatViolaKid Thanks Drew, inspiring video. I wanna add that recording thing to my practicing. I have already used that kind of diary. And I also set up a certain time for practice, if possible even the same time every day. Would you like to make a video about how you practice in detail? Do you do any sports to be physically fit and strong? I would like to exercise more in the gym for my upper body. But by lifting these heavy weights my hands always get so hard and unflexible. It's like I wanna do something for my body but at the same time I definitely don't wanna lose quality in playing the cello. Maybe you don't have to make longer videos. When a topic like practicing has many different aspects, you could do a series of videos, like for example David Finckel's cello talks. I'm however well aware of the fact, that there are about 40 years between you and David Finckel. It' s a totally different style. Have you got any advise from your own experience bringing body workout and string playing together? How is the octett doing? Take care.
I really enjoy the addition of the music to videos. It really ups the quality and makes your vlogs more complete when you end with your music. Thanks for inspiring me to strive harder.
I've been using these practice methods and my playing seems to be improving 50-75% every day now! I don't do the 10 minute breaks or anything like that, but rather sessions throughout the day, using the methods you use for practicing!
I liked seeing you interacting and playing with other musicians, the sight reading was great. I think it'd be cool if you posted a picture of your practice log everyday to instagram. Your method is interesting and I'd like to see more of it
I just want to thank you for recording while walking through NYC like you do. I've got a little piece of my heart in that city and it always feels amazing to get a glimpse of it as if I were walking through it again. I come back every year but I miss it all the time I'm gone. Thank you!
I really enjoyed this vlog and found the tips for better (best maybe) practice very helpful! Recently i started to learn violin with my 5-year girl under the same teacher's instruction. (-: Really glad to find your channel and i will keep visiting! Many thanks from a south korean mom. Lol
Thanks for sharing, I now started using a practicing journal! 😊I just tried out uploading my first video interpreting one of Bach's Prelude, I would really appreciate it if y'all would check it out🙈
Thanks Drew! I love the longer videos and love to hear you playing. An in-depth practise video with actual playing would be very interesting, too. Also, I´m an adult beginner (started age 45, 6 years into the journey, violin and viola :-)). What advice do you have for non-professional and/or older players? What should we focus on? Thanks for your great content! Love from Germany!
Hmmmmm, I'll have to think about how to structure that! But that definitely sounds interesting =) Practice sessions are always unique, so I couldn't in good conscience say that if you do THIS every time, you'll be amazing. Different stages of learn require different mechanics--and even then, everyone is good at bad at different things! That's why private teachers are so essential. For an intermediate player like yourself, I would suggest that you cultivate your ear by listening to great players and start recording yourself. Figure out out how they create their sound and experiment with different vibratos, bow speeds, arm weights, bow contacts, and bow distributions. It helps if you approach things scientifically =)
Thanks Drew, this is really helpful. I have a great teacher, but I find your suggestions spot on. Exploring the mystery of sound creation, ear training etc. more thoughtfully / scientifically. Yes. And I´ve never recorded myself. I´ll try that and hope I don´t give up playing after that :-)! Thanks a bunch and keep up the good work!
Awesome video! The tips were awesome! Yes I've heard them before, but I really love how you gave tips, and then showed us how you use those tips! The longer videos are great. Keep them for sure! Thanks for sharing!
You are such an inspiring musician, I started playing violin at 12 too, I thought at some point that I was going to quit, but your videos saved me. Now I’m 15 play Bach partitas Ps I also play the piano and thank u so so much!😍
I liked the longer video a lot, because I get to listen to you play, and talk about stuff, and go places; it's all so interesting!! Also, don't you just love how perfectly crafted that ending was written in Borodin's Nocturne? Borodin really knows his way with music!
Great advice! What recorder do you use? Also, How do you deal with neighbors not calling the cops haha. You know, usually, I hate "Day in the Life" videos, but this was done well. Thanks for the travel tip reply.
I use a Zoom H4N. And in terms of the neighbors--they don't seem to mind. I typically only practice during the day and never after 11PM, so it's pretty chill.
Excellent tips--I forget to record and to warm up. I am setting up a sched today. I am learning Freddy Kings guitar lead on 'Sweet Home Chicago' harder on viola/violin than you'd think. Thanks VK
Hi!! I play alto saxophone and it is my absolute dream to get into Juilliard. I want to thank you for explaining everything and strengthening my desire to get in. You said that my chance to get in is super slim in a video a few months ago and that I probably won't get in. I really hope to prove you wrong.
I really enjoy the longer videos! It was a very nice way to sit back and relax after a long day at school. I also really enjoy hearing you play more in your videos! I have always found your videos to be very motivational. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go practice ;)
Thank you very much for your tips! I am sure they will help me studying the piano. I have that doubt since years ago about how to study correctly or more effectively. Now, I know I can do it! 💪 😉
when do you watch all your recordings? how do you find time to watch all your "boxes"? do you skim through or... ahhhh im trying to get into the habit of recording myself :P
I know exactly how you feel apart from the dripping nose! My cat is involved in everything I do in the apartment hehe. Amazing company though ;) And saying no to people is surely a big part of it, but knowing that one is working on/living ones dreams, is worth it :)
So I'm a beginner violin and when I do vibrato it's always off temp and my conductor gets mad at me (I'm always too slow) do you have any ways to help my problem?
Just scrolling through the comments and saw this - I've just gotten past this problem very recently and what I personally did was practice vibrato for an excessive amount of time. And for me it wasn't necessarily doing it as fast as i could, but rather doing it slow for long amounts of time until when I DID try it fast, it came a lot more natural and easier. That's just what worked for me, not sure if this is a universal solution but just saw this comment unanswered here and wanted to see if I could help. :P
Talented Violist...Talented RUclipsr. What else do you need xD Now just a bunch of all around statements/questions. I'm quite sure my viola is starting to get too small for me, currently using a size 15.5 but maybe heading over to a 16. I was wondering if you had any tips on what kind of viola to purchase, quality, strings, etc. Another problem is in our orchestra, to be quite honest, only the first two stands play (myself up there.) We had a few judges come over for our performance to score us, and they consistently stated "Violas more sound, more power, etc." Often, our section crumbles during solis in pieces, either due to making a mistake which for some reason causes the violas in the back to stop playing all together or just a plain lack of confidence in their playing because it sounds scratchy and out of place, having a domino effect causing a majority of the section to stop too. I was wondering if you've ever dealt with that, and know anyway to power through that...I've lost the word for it...lack of confidence? that suddenly dawns upon you when you are one of the only 3-4 playing (who eventually also fall). Sigh...the lack of enthusiasm and confidence within our orchestra's violas has been killing my passion for the instrument. Luckily, I play with chamber which gives me some hope that not all violas are like this but...y'know. It is what it is and it is hard to ignore when your conductor/teacher who started as a violist openly downs your section. Can't wait for high school though, hopefully I will be amongst more of my kind who truly use their instrument like it should be :) Anyways. Thank you for the fantastic video, loved the editing and the music in the beginning and the end. Can't wait for more :D
If you want a new instrument, start going to different shops and trying some out. Don't settle! Be explorative and look for a instrument that feels and sounds right! Don't worry about the other violists. Don't let them bring you down. I dealt with that in school orchestra too. All you have to do is just focus on being better player yourself and people will either be inspired by that, or they'll just fizzle away and you won't have to deal with them anymore =3
Well, I am already on the right track lol because I already have my practice log with my goals and errrthang and I also set a schedule. And yes, it works. A LOT.
hi! I love your videos so much, especially the Juilliard ones! (dream school, but living in new zealand makes it harder :( ). I've played guitar for 8 years, no grades, and I've recently started saxophone, which I will be doing grades for. However, I feel like everyone my age who plays saxophone (I'm nearly 15) is so much more advanced than me, and have played since they were like 6. I feel like theres no way I could ever catch up. Any advice on how to get more advanced at my instrument a little faster and how to get some more confidence back? thanks :)
Hi! So I’ve been listening/watching your videos for the majority of today. I do not play viola, I play the flute. (Been playing off and on for the last 10 years.) However I’ve found your videos insightful and interesting to see another side of music. I’ve never thought of using a practice log but I think I may start. I play in 2 flute only large ensembles. I wanted to ask though, I play 2 Instruments, the C flute and the Bass flute.. in your world, the string world, I doubt many play for than 1 but what’s your thoughts on how to practice well with 2 Instruments? As in.. do you play 1 for a few hours so your warmed up on it and then warm up and switch to the other or so you switch back and forth? It may not matter on a string instrument like it does with a metal woodwind. Just wanted to ask. Thanks!
literally how everyone practices in my orchestra: play scales, then a run through, then the trouble spots, then take a break which ends up to be 4 hours and we only get like 10 min of practice
Hello ThatViolaKid. I'm interested in starting viola lessons and have been looking into renting a viola. Do you have any recommendations on what violas are best for novices to start with?
I like the video. I'm looking for things to help my children form good practice habits and schedules. I'm not sure what age you're aiming at audience wise. There is a bit much non musical for my 10 yr old son to be held captive by the video.
How do you balance practice time with a lot of repertoire and be able to retain old repertoire? Also I don't mind video length, you should post whatever you feel like posting :)
Hey TVK, what do you suggest for people that always are “too busy?” I‘m still a school student but I want to get serious about improving my skills, so how were you able to balance music and academics, and essentially find the time to do both?
Hi so I’m grade 9 (9th grade ) and I only go to college in like 4 years but it’s my dream to get into Juilliard. I’m a violinist but my dream is to get into Juilliard. The vibe seams to cool . I’ve seen a lot of your videos and even tho ur a violist I think it’s pretty cool . I want to learn the viola as my next instrument ... but my point is I wanted to say thank u for insight . Because otherwise I would be going to a school that I know barely anything about except for the fact that it’s my dream . U inspire me a lot . Thank u
I'm a viola in my school orchestra, and we have practice logs that I hate, but it only requires 120 minutes per week as compared to his which is 3 hours a day. Wow
Brandon Simmons your right about the piano but that also goes with most precussion insts. too. i play viola, precussion (marimba, piano, snare, timbale ect.), and clarinet 😃
hi! I'm a freshman going onto sophomore. I play violin so I'm not a violist but i just have a few quick questions. What type of pieces did you play back I'm freshman or sophomore year? Currently I'm learning Glazunovs concerto in A minor. It's my dream to get into Juilliard. Do you think I can make it to Juilliard by the time I reach Senior year? Hope you read this! -XoXo Jacob K.
I can't really tell you without actually hearing you play haha. And, I wouldn't discourage you from at least auditioning. However, I wanna make sure that you understand that Juilliard is just a school homie. Don't sweat it if you don't make it in! =)
Hi! What kind of strings do you recommend for an $1800 "step up" viola? I'm crossed between either Pirastro Chorda's, Pirastro Aricore's, or Dominant's. I mentioned the price because, while my instrument is definitely not as expensive as performance instruments can be, it's also definitely not a student viola. I would like my viola to have a warm, even dark, tone. I am on a bit of a budget, so I wouldn't go for Pirastro Oliv's or Obligato's or Pirastro Passione's (and that might be overkill too?). I also would like to move away from steel core strings. So what kinds of recommendations would you make? #asktvk
I heard those can take awhile to reach their full sound potential though, and then don't keep it that long. Have you noticed that at all, or has anyone you know?
Hey I'm 16, I've been playing the guitar for 4 years but I felt like it was not the instrument that I'm built to so I'm deciding to take a cello lesson. Can you give me some advice for my new instrument?
I don't play cello but my friends do, but here are some tips -practice -listen or watch other people play cello -take classes -pay attention to your teacher ( if you have one ) -try to have fun
So I have been thinking on setting a goal on Juilliard and was wondering if it is possible to be able to get in without private lessons, would they increase my chance of getting in or just another thing that people say you need?
Depends on the teacher but generally they help a lot. I've had three private teachers. I improved under all of them. The first one was someone that just finished college. Second one was a current college student. The third/my current one is a full blown professional Violinist that has been playing over 30 years I think. My current teacher has made me improve my technique the most and I have gotten so much better from her( I'm a Violist). The added pressure of having someone older as your teacher also helps motivate you to practice more. I highly recommend private teachers.

Love this one!
i'm here for it
im not going to answer your question. Instead im going to ask if you were going for a "Casey Neistatesque" look in this video... haha

Dude your vlog style is incredible. You're really finding your voice. Thanks for being you, brother!
Thanks for being patient with me! This vlogging thing is toughhh
I've started using a practice notebook and it has helped me a lot. By the way, I love the Borodin String Quartet 😃❤
Someone who actually directs you to the content that you want without making you watch the entire click-baity video. Huge respect!
Haha thanks =)
OMG!!!! The edits are perfect
I'm glad you enjoyed the edits! I spent a bit more time on this video =)
I started doing interleaved practice and found my skills and performance has improved tremendously. Look into it!
I really enjoy the addition of the music to videos. It really ups the quality and makes your vlogs more complete when you end with your music. Thanks for inspiring me to strive harder.
My pleasure, Kathy! Glad you enjoyed it!

I personally think it'd be interesting to see your daily progress but I'm a nerd lol😂👍

Will do, Paige! Glad you enjoyed the video!
You are such an inspiring musician, I started playing violin at 12 too, I thought at some point that I was going to quit, but your videos saved me. Now I’m 15 play Bach partitas

The quartet itself is a bit annoying! But that Nocturne is dankkkk
full borodin string quartet can be a good idea
Thank you!
I've never thought of making a practice journal but that's a great idea! I'll definitely be making one soon :)
It'll change your life
Thanks for the tips ....I needed motivation to practice more
Emancipator fan!! Awesome 😎👏🏿
Totally going to start a practice log for Viola and piano
Do ittt

Excellent tips--I forget to record and to warm up. I am setting up a sched today. I am learning Freddy Kings guitar lead on 'Sweet Home Chicago' harder on viola/violin than you'd think. Thanks VK
My pleasure homie!

Lololol I know that feel
I really love your videos!! You play so well. Hearing this music makes me so happy.
I'm happy to make you happy! =)
Hi!! I play alto saxophone and it is my absolute dream to get into Juilliard. I want to thank you for explaining everything and strengthening my desire to get in. Great video!! definitely gonna try this out
Glad to hear it! =)
when having breaks how do you prevent yourself from getting distracted and just stop playing then?
I set a timer and get back to work on my instrument. It also helps if I don't go to far away from it physically too
these videos are great and help me so much .... keep it up :)
Thank you very much for your tips! I am sure they will help me studying the piano. I have that doubt since years ago about how to study correctly or more effectively. Now, I know I can do it! 💪 😉
So happy to hear that, Daniela! =)
Dude you made me want to practice!!!
4:15 advice is get this man some cocoa butter holy cow...nice playing though frank

Hopefully you're right =)))
Thanks for this video! I'll have to start putting boxes in my practice log, haha :)
Boxes are awesome!!
Awesome video!
We actually use the same pen and nearly the same calender (exact same color)!:D Made my day:D
We're twins!

You're wearing a 'Love Your Melon' beanie! Are they a good beanie? I've been wanting to buy one or two, but they're always sold out
It's the best beanie I've ever owned. Totally worth it
Thanks for the tips,I can structure my practice now, instead of mindless hours of practice
You're welcome!
You should do more covers with Nathan Chan, that Hello cover was awesome.
I really want to!
I'm awful at sight reading, but I'm only 14 so I have time to get better :)
Thanks for the tips ^^
oh my goodness sight reading goals
It just takes practice haha
Well, I am already on the right track lol because I already have my practice log with my goals and errrthang and I also set a schedule.
And yes, it works. A LOT.
Boom!
I like the longer video
p. s. Frank has skills!
Ayyyy the frank guy was playing the Courante from Suite No. 3, AYYY more like Courant-AYYY
#AskTVK: What equipment do you use to make your videos? What are recommendations for a musician to record their practices/work for auditions, etc.?
Hello ThatViolaKid. I'm interested in starting viola lessons and have been looking into renting a viola. Do you have any recommendations on what violas are best for novices to start with?
I was actually blown away by how beautiful you all sounded
Awww thank you!
I like the video. I'm looking for things to help my children form good practice habits and schedules. I'm not sure what age you're aiming at audience wise. There is a bit much non musical for my 10 yr old son to be held captive by the video.
Thanks you so much for this advice 😄
My pleasure homie!!!
What! You do warm ups for an hour? I only do them for 15 mins so how can I go for an hour? Now I wanna start a practice book :3
How do you balance practice time with a lot of repertoire and be able to retain old repertoire? Also I don't mind video length, you should post whatever you feel like posting :)
It depends. Why do you need to retain your old repertoire? I think simply playing through it slowly keeps it in the fingers :)
Yo frank!!!
Hey TVK, what do you suggest for people that always are “too
busy?” I‘m still a school student but I want to get serious about improving my skills, so how were you able to balance music and academics, and essentially find the time to do both?
Longer vid is a GOOD IDEA.
Glad you think so! =)
Not only are u good at the viola u are a good Flogger (idk if I spelled that correct)
I might be a little late on a response lol but this has truly helped me thank you
Hi so I’m grade 9 (9th grade ) and I only go to college in like 4 years but it’s my dream to get into Juilliard.
Thank u
I thank you for all of your support! You're awesome!!!
Yeah, I'm a huge Atlanta sports fan. RIP.
You're awesome
THANKS!!!
Thank you!
I'm a viola in my school orchestra, and we have practice logs that I hate, but it only requires 120 minutes per week as compared to his which is 3 hours a day. Wow
=) It varies. Sometimes I practice 4 hours. Sometimes I practice 0 hours
lol im watching this during my practice whoops
Damn I miss NYC!
What’s the book called the one you used for sight reading
#askTVK: what do you actually think about the fact that you can't get into a music college without knowing the teachers?
Why would you wanna go to a music college without knowing a teacher? That's who you are gonna be with everyday depending on yoru course load?
Hello, do you know any way to balance two instruments well if I hope to go to a music school?
Justin K u play two instruments?
Brandon Simmons your right about the piano but that also goes with most precussion insts. too. i play viola, precussion (marimba, piano, snare, timbale ect.), and clarinet 😃
I play more than two but I focus on trumpet (with flugelhorn) and violin
I have done violin for 11 years and trumpet for 6 but Im a freshman in high school
You don't haha. If you wanna really be good at one, you have to go all in on it!
#asktvk
Evah Pirazzis
I heard those can take awhile to reach their full sound potential though, and then don't keep it that long. Have you noticed that at all, or has anyone you know?
Man i wish i could sight read like that. Im terrible at sight reading
Hey I'm 16, I've been playing the guitar for 4 years but I felt like it was not the instrument that I'm built to so I'm deciding to take a cello lesson. Can you give me some advice for my new instrument?
I don't play cello but my friends do, but here are some tips
-practice
-listen or watch other people play cello
-take classes
-pay attention to your teacher ( if you have one )
-try to have fun
Thx😊😊😊😊😊
My pleasure!
Lion King in the sub 🦁♥️
I'm practicing a level 6 I learned the first page but I need 3 or 2 more by may and I'm kind of scared and I'm not good at sight reading😭
The only way you get better a sight reading is by doing it! =)
Do you have any Brass friends who do vids like this? I'd love to see them.
I don't have any brass friend who even do youtube...haha
I highly recommend private teachers.
donut11975 but they are expensive so i teach myself as much as i can
See if you can arrange anything with your teachers. They really are so valuable and helpful.
I haven't heard of anyone getting into Juilliard for Classical Music without having help from a teacher! You can only teach yourself so much
+ThatViolaKid ok ty so much
ATL Love!
Definitely
