As a engine builder and an A tech I never understood why people wont spend the $180-$250 for bore and hone at a machine shop and will tear apart an engine and then try to repair rust in cylinders to roll the dice on $800+ in parts and gaskets plus time spent in hopes the engine will work and not grenade. Actually the last v8 engine I built with new cam and new pistons new bearings and all of the machine work plus rebuilding the heads with machining was $1100. O,Riellys parts store will take your block or heads or even a whole engine and machine and even build your engine for you. Drop off at a local store and pick it back up at the local store. They have their own wearhouses and machine shops under their own name and extreamely affordable to use.
I think some folks like the enjoyment of doing something themselves instead of relying on outside sources for everything. I doubt you will grenade an engine with a less than perfect hone; poor part selection and poor building techniques would be a far larger cause of total failure. No amount of machine work can keep this from happening. I didn't know this about O'Reilly's, though. Good information to have.
Nice work
