Im a Muslim and so dont celebrate Christmas, but have to say that this is one of my all time favourite christmas carol, it brings back memories of when i when i was a young girl at school and singing christmas carols at assembly. it didnt matter that i wasnt a Christian, I loved Christmas time when I was a girl, its such a pity its too commercialised these days!
The music is very beautiful, but what is even more beautiful is the truth of the lyrics proclaiming Christ, the Son of God and Son of Mary, as the Savior of the world.
I agree that it is a pity that holidays are becoming commercialized. Thank you for sharing such a lovely memory from your childhood. This song brings back memories of my childhood when my mother would sing it.
I agree totally it has become way too commercialized. Also more Christians need to be focusing on giving gifts to kids that only have zero, one,or two toys instead of focusing on just giving gifts to kids that have fiveto ten or more gifts.
I pray that you leave the Muslim beliefs and embrace Jesus Christ in all His reality and beauty, and make Him your Lord, Savior and Friend. I believe these kind of songs touched us as children, because our spirit's were reaching for the truth of the New Born King Who will soon be the returning King coming to gather His children to Himself. There is still time to repent and come to Jesus. Perhaps, that will be your Christmas present this year -- finding Jesus, for HE is the true gift or Christmas!!!
I’m writing a story about twins born on Christmas named Holly and Ivy, and this song is perfect for the story. The twin named Ivy is the popular one, and Holly is always in her shadow. In this song, it’s the other way around. The Holly is the star of the song.
My mother planted a holly bush with bright red berries and very sharp thorns, in front of our stone fireplace in Westwood Mass. We would shine a spot light on the huge 25 foot plain green wreath, with a big bow, so passers by could see the wreath from down the street. After hearing my church choir sing this tonight, I'm sure my mother was speaking to me that this holly plant is still standing strong and forever there.
@@centerfold8 Holly is talking about the Holly King, which was an aspect of the Horned god Cernunnos worshipped by the Celts. Ivy is talking about the god Bacchus. The Ivy was essential to his rites. This is why there's a line that says, " The holly and the ivy, when they are both full grown, of all the trees that are in the wood, the holly bears the crown." That's a clear reference to the Holly King. Christmas by the way is not a biblical holy day. Nowhere in the Bible does it command Israel to celebrate such a day. From research you can find that it was a holiday commissioned by the Nicean council in the 3rd century, who were Catholics. Christmas is a solar holiday based upon the Winter Solstice which signifies the disappearance and reappearance of the Sun.
Abel O that’s like many Holidays and Catholicism is a mix of Christianity and Roman mythology combined they worship the Saints and the Virgin Mary but the Bible says worship only God. You take what you will from holidays that’s how they work
@@samdaman916 -- Holly is a naturalistic way of signifying the divine nature of Jesus and His Mother Mary. I've heard it said that this tune was a combination of pagan nature worship and Christianity -- like the putting up of an evergreen tree each December. The evergreen tree; since they always appear green with no shedding of leaves; is a symbol of never-ending life. My grand mum just thought of this tune as simply a way of remembering and honouring The Christ. I, too, view this song in the same way. Take care. God in Christ be with you. -- W
One of my absolute favorite Christmas carols. Just came across this version randomly. Now I always listen to this one. A very nostalgic song for me, reminds me of when I was a kid, a very cold Christmas Day morning.

Oh my gosh. This is so beautiful. We watched a Christmas in Europe video in World Languages today, and this song played, and it's been stuck in my head all day. This and Carol of the Bells are definitely my favorite Christmas Carols :) ♥
Strange story about this song. I honestly never heard it, or remembering hearing it, until about 2002 when I asked a co-worker what was his favorite Christmas song. I went home to look it up online. I couldn't believe I'd never heard the song before. After two listens it was then my favorite Christmas song.

"The Holly and the Ivy" is an English traditional Christmas carol. The carol contains intermingled Christian and Pagan imagery, with holly and ivy representing Pagan fertility symbols. Holly and ivy have been the mainstay of English Christmas decoration for church use since at least the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, when they are mentioned regularly in churchwardens’ accounts.
This song is not that popular here in the philippines.. and it is one of my personal favorites because it sounds classy and fresh.. it gives me a different vibe from the usual christmas songs
