  • The Beatles were close to splitting up when "Let It Be" was filmed in 1969 - but there's a lot the documentary leaves out. From George quitting the group to Paul's growing annoyance with Yoko, the new film fails to tell the full story.

What do you think was the best part of "Let It Be"?

To be accurate, Let It Be album was correctly released as The Beatles' final album as, unlike Abbey Road, it contains music recorded by some members of the band in 1970!

Let It Be is now like bonus material from Get Back. Loved seeing it in 4k, the picture and sound quality was gorgeous. Peace and love ✌️❤️

Get Back couldn't possibly be more like bonus material if it tried; it's not a documentary. Peter Jackson simply took took several hours of Michael Lindsay-Hogg's footage and basically said, "Hey, want to hang out with the Beatles? Cool. Here you go." Let It Be, however, is a work of art. Being a documentarian involves perceiving an underlying truth and skillfully picking and choosing the right moments to assemble a coherent narrative. In this case, the bittersweet truth was that all worthwhile art comes at a cost. The Beatles put their personal relationships on the line for the greater good of uniting all kinds of people through their music. The film humanizes the Beatles (whom many had idolized) but in doing so makes the triumphant scene at the end all the more remarkable and moving. All great narratives have a strong central conflict, and Get Back, while a lot of fun, is aimless and lacks a timeless poignant message.

@@WaitingtoHit Couldn't disagree more. Let It Be has always felt listless and unformed, in my opinion. Probably due to the fact that the fab four were at the end of the Long and Winding Road and their tethers with one another. They couldn't decide what to do; a live show, a concert, a film. Everything was a mess and that's what poor MLH ended up with. The form and structure of the film has always felt broken. In this way, it is at least a true representation of the filmmaker's experience. Get Back showed the world what else was happening in this period of The Beatles, and revealed a much more coherent and true depiction of what happened during the sessions. I loved rewatching Let It Be, the restoration is gorgeous, but the film itself is still underwhelming, especially when seen after the wonderful and expansive Get Back project.

@@MoreMovies4u Get Back simply revealed an intentionally rosier depiction than what fifty years of interviews (including those with the Beatles) and research had corroborated. Less editing equals more b.s. and less insight, which is exactly what the optimists of the Beatles, Paul and Ringo, wanted.

@@WaitingtoHit I think you'll find with over 3hrs of footage there was decidedly more editing involved. A fuller picture is a truer picture imo. Interesting to hear your thoughts on this, but I don't think we can go any further with this discussion except by saying agree to disagree.

@@MoreMovies4u Three hours? Ha! Get Back is almost eight hours long! There is no fuller picture. There's the picture, and then there's a bunch of other stuff that was fun but irrelevant to any sort of substantive statement about the Beatles or artistry in general. Get Back is like an uncarved slab of marble. There's enough fluff in Get Back that you could easily forget the key moments of tension indicating the band's fragile state (which is exactly what Ringo and Paul wanted despite their confirming _everything_ Let It Be had to say about those sessions for fifty years). The fact that the Beatles were still enjoying each other's company a decent amount is not actually a fact that runs counter to Let It Be; rather, it simply runs counter to the _myth_ of Let It Be.
If you make a movie about a specific period of time, then the question is inevitably: "Why is this period significant?" Michael Lindsay-Hogg's film answers that question and then goes a step further by reminding us why the Beatles and artists like them have mattered. It's mind-boggling that anyone would buy into the idea that Beatles scholars and the Beatles themselves lied to the public about Let It Be generally being a trying set of sessions for fifty years, but unfortunately, Michael Lindsay-Hogg had more than enough footage from each day for Paul and Ringo to rewrite their own history in gullible people's minds. I can just hear Ringo now: "Peter, make it mostly peace and love, okay?" I guess the Beatles Anthology book and video project will now need a good sterilization to meet with Paul and Ringo's approval.

Nobody seems to be mentioning that the new version of Let it Be does not include the scene of Paul tutoring Ringo at the piano in an exasperated almost bullying manner. I remember that sequence from having seen Let it Be over 40 years ago on the tv. Possibly other sequences have been dropped as well. I felt almost everything in Let it Be was included in Get Back but there is a view from behind Ringo while he is playing the drums which shows more of his drumming skills than was shown in Get Back. Michael Lindsay-Hogg seems to want to show snippets that lead to the disintegration whereas Peter Jackson (with modern technology) was able to give a clearer narrative of how problems were building up.

what do you mean "yoko ono wasn't contributing to the music of the band in any way"
*yes she was - there's literally multiple jam sessions with yoko screaming on vocals, john too, & paul playing (all of them, jamming hard to get the stress out, especially right after george 'quit'...it was therapeutic, & those "music" (if you can call it that) sessions are in the 'get back' documentary
