- Neighbor Rex is removing rocky soil and replacing with good top soil where there was an old driveway. He needs Tractor Time with Tim's Deere 5075E to disk the compacted soil, and load the dump truck. Tim brings over the Deere 2038R with power rake to help smooth and level once the top soil is delivered.

Tips for Tim. One go get multiple paint pens. Park Johnny 5 on a flat level concrete surface. Lower Johnnys bucket till you have it flat and level, use black paint pen to mark level against a certain point that is easily seen. Then use another color on both sides just as a highlighter of the black approximately a 1/4 inch thick stripe. This will give you a slight scrape line or a slight add line to your flat level line. It was a trick I came up with when I was a city operator for a parks department. We kept getting new tractors after I did the first one, I think the other departments like my idea so they kept taking our tractors. I shouldn't have let the water department operator use it.
Loading a dump truck does take practice. I once helped my BIL strip 6" of indoor horse arena sand using my JD 4720 CUT with 400CX MSL loader. I loaded all that sand into a big tandem axle dump truck, compete with 6" wood extensions. I did have to load it from both sides and the back to get it nice and full. I do know, for sure, that having the MSL feature sure helped making raising the loader to full height a nice smooth operation. I just curled the bucket all the way back at ground level and then only had to raise the booms as I approached the dump truck. No "herky-jerky" manual bucket "leveling" as is required with a NSL loader.
Great seeing the use of all the tractors together. Work went faster, each had a job suited for them - with the right implement for the job. A different bucket might have worked better for Johnny 5, but you work with what you have. I also liked that you showed a "readjust" on Johnny 5 when dumping - we're all human and not perfect. A little will, some motivation and a dash of determination will get a job done. At least there wasn't a need for 1/2 measures or duct tape LOL As for using the dump trailer, well sometimes it not until a project starts that you know just what you need to be most efficient. Tim, I get it on delicate bucket work with your Johnny 5. With my 4 series Johnny with cab, finish bucket work is more challenging for me than my old 4 series open station. There is a “sacrifice” with the cab, never the less, I will keep my new one with the cab! 😉. Yet another point for the MSL with cab tractor especially for fork and grapple work. I would love to show you some of the benefits of a box blade. I agree it might be inefficient to pick up the dirt/material twice, but there are things you can do with a box blade that a loader is either not very good for, or is incapable of doing.
In the South we call a box blade a yard box. If you practice, just a little with one, I think you will see the advantages of the yard box. The thing is, you can see exactly what the yard box is doing. With a front loader that is hard. You can also run faster with the yard box without digging in if you have it set correctly. Like anything, with a tractor, finding out how to use it is the key. A little time spent with the yard box and you will love what it can do. You can level up an area very quickly by angling the back blade down just slightly and run in circles with increasing and decreasing radii with each pass.
Great thing about video is you can see the things first hand that you can improve on with the loader work. Nice work tim

Box blades are nice for pulling snow out of tight areas too. Then hit the pile with a front snowblower or loader once it is in a more accessible area.
Funny how two sizes of Tractors take two styles of operators... Learning between the two takes time, you are learning quickly!
thanks for sharing the video, back in the day I ran a 7 ft wide towner 2 gang disc. I bolted on 2 each 7 ft long railroad tracks to the disc it really made the disc cut in. probably wasn't too good for the bearings but it sure worked great .
That was a lot of work to get to the finish. Disking, Johnny 5, power rake. I needed to see the finish of the work done. Since this was pre stent there should be grass growing and looking good too.
One grading tip I was given by an uncle who was an excellent professional machine operator is-
The machine cannot cut a level grade unless it is sitting level. This is true for tractors and crawlers ,unless you have a tiltable blade, as some do.
Ive put about 5000 hours in on our small JD crawler, also operated larger Caterpillar and IHC crawlers.
On top of that I have a fair amount of time in using ag tractor loaders.
With all of that, I still sometimes forget my uncle's simple but important bit of advice.
Sometimes it means dropping a bit of fill on one side in the area where the tractor will be sitting just as you enter the cut. It seems fiddly but it works.

I was thinking a pass with a ripper to break the compaction then harley rake it out and add some tripple mix to get some organics back in.....but lots of ways to slice the pie

My Dad grew our lawn over a manhole cover in our yard once... Public Works came out & needed to use the manhole cover & Dad had to show them where it was & they made him uncover it... lol

Earth work is a skill learned over time. I don't know how many hours of box blade work it's taken me to feel relatively confident. I find bucket controls to be a bit more touchy to get that nice consistent smoothness. I thin some of that has to do with the wheelbase on a tractor when using the bucket, whereas floating a box blade behind seems to be easier.

You should turn your box blade scarifiers pointing away from the tires because if something happens and your box blade comes unhooked you could back up not knowing it’s unhooked and the scarifiers could go right through the tire...lesson learned the hard way

May try to back low side up on edge on the high side then dig when the grade gets level go back to staying on level ground to dig. Thats how we once did with old dozers that didnt have 6 way blades

I bought a new JD 8110 in 2001 and had the dealer put a Koyker 785 loader on it. That was an unhandy setup. The bucket was about 25’ ahead of you, it was ok for loading the TMR or pushing snow but definitely not grading or anything that had to look good when complete.
I love the box blade but I agree. I pull it 80% and still have to push it 20%. Another great video!
Master Tim I am just like you, it is hard for me to grade with the loader on uneven surfaces. If the surface is relatively flat, no problem at all. I use the box blade (aggressive) or land plane (less aggressive final grading) for uneven surfaces any more. 👍🙂

For cost reasons, I bought a chain harrow to go with my tiller for flattening/finishing/burying seeds. Works wonderfully as long as you have plenty of space.

Buckets are complemented by the box blade. And they can tilt to compensate for the sloped terrain.
Tim a box blade or land plane have there pros and cons and loaders have there pros and cons with the box blade if you get into a soupier mud situation where the tractor feels like it's not going forward just lift the box blade and not leaving ruts in the soil ware as the loader having more weight forward
I would use bucket and box blade both at the same pass

looks like the self leveling loader on this deere has more curl than the on the smaller self leveling loader

A 3pt blade spun around so the blade points backwards does a great job for spreading and leveling vs a box blade or loader.
After Tim's long dissertation on how much more efficient the loader bucket was compared to the box blade, it sure looked like your neighbor was doing a much better job with the box blade. To each his own, I know Tim has never liked a box blade, and always looks for reasons not to use 1.

I guess you answered your own question, you don't use loaders that often and a box blade to tidy the driveway is a lot cheaper. That's why it's the preferred choice I'd say.

The price difference with a Box Blade VS Frontend loader is huge! Plus the easy quick removal.

At least on the 1025r and 2038r with single point connection, I can remove/attach loader without leaving the seat...and fast.

Skid loader with a track and dirt bucket would have made life easy.

The rolling basket takes care of the dirt clods.
I'm used to buckets like on Johnny 2 I use the flat part on top of the bucket as a guide to level. I would have a really hard time with Johnny 5 and the kubota

I can't tell someone how to do that, but I can certainly show you. I'm not a teacher I'm a doer. The first dozer I had didn't have hydraulic tilt only up and down. Had to learn to work with that.
Also not a fan of spreading topsoil with rubber tired machinery. It compacts the soil too much. That bucket looks too deep for your tractor and on loader tractors I always opted for bigger front tires

Bud I got a 5083e cab 4x4 I've got 5409.hours and it a 14 or 15 only had 2 put king pins on front axel
If you follow #DonHanson tips but with a 4 in 1 it would have been easier because you could use the back of the 4 in 1 as a blade
Do you think the skid Steer bucket is moving the load out too far where the global style is more like a normal tractor bucket that would be better for the tractor

If we had a tractor with a loader, then we wouldn’t have a box blade, but it is not worth buying a $30000 tractor to do the same job. The only problem with the older tractors, no front loader (some exceptions) and without ‘live hydraulics’ so you can use power steering, lift the 3pt and use the hyd, Outlets that you can use at the same time. We luckily have an oliver 550 then you can do it all at the same time, just minus a loader.

Tim, Tim do you think that the devices you bought onto your bucket for cleaning out weeds and grass and stuff in your yard that keeps the bucket a little bit above ground level would have worked good here. Since that dirt was so loose.

2:32 that Kubota needs some steering linkage replaced. The BX tie-rods need replacing every 400 hours of loader work so I imagine he's probably 800 hrs overdue with that wobble.

Honestly, they should have just aerated and done a soil test to see what nutrients it's deficient in. Then kill off old grass/weeds and plant new. But power equipment is fun
But TIM, You Are the King of Compact and the 1025R. Can't fault you for lack of seat time in Johnny 5. Maybe use it more instead of proving OJ (Original Johnny) can do a Bigger heavier job since J5 is available.

ou cant precision grade with a loader. Try putting a crown or valley in a road or driveway with a loader
Also you don’t get the suction effect on the front. 3 point hitch implements put weight on rear tires so you can create much more tractive effort.

Tim, when you were using the loader on the smaller tractor at the end it seemed to be real "jerky". The loader would up some, stop, bucket would tilt, then loader would go back up, all shaky and bouncy. Is there something wrong with the hydraulics?

Yes, for some jobs.
However, the ability to do the work without destroying the grass is nice too.
We may use a track loader someday, who knows.
