The retail giant Amazon missed years-long opportunities to pull a chemical with a documented history of being used by young people to end their lives, KING 5 Investigators and 9NEWS Investigates found.
Amazon sold 99% strength sodium nitrite, a common meat preservative, for years after red flags came into the company about the misuse of the product as a suicide agent, according to legal documents. Amazon pulled the product from its site in October 2022 - six years after the first recorded online complaint from a grieving parent.

Talk to your children, have conversations with them and keep communications open. The world is different now with social media and the internet. Description 100% Pure Food Grade Sodium Nitrate used in the curing process to prevent botulism poisoning for long aged meats like country hams. Its commercial use is prohibited by the FDA in smoked and cooked meats, non-smoked and cooked meats, sausages or bacon and is restricted to 200ppm in dry cured uncooked products. Usage for home curing should not exceed 0.1g per 500g of meat. During the curing process Sodium Nitrate is converted into Sodium Nitrite by microorganisms present on the meat. Sodium Nitrite provides the characteristic flavor and red color associated with curing. Other Details Dietary Attributes: Plant-Based, Non-GMO, Gluten-Free, Kosher (OU), Keto-friendly Ingredient List: Sodium Nitrate Allergen(s): None Documentation: Spec/SDS/COA/Misc.
These are the medical concerns sodium nitrite (SN) is an inorganic salt that appears as a slightly yellowish crystalline solid, odorless, and highly soluble in water at room temperature. It is highly toxic to humans at specific doses because it can oxidize hemoglobin to methemoglobin, causing severe tissue hypoxia.
Definition of hypoxemia is abnormally low oxygenation of the blood. It is distinguished from hypoxia, in which tissue oxygen (O2) delivery is inadequate to sustain normal cellular aerobic metabolism.

As a mother I can see why she's suing. She's hurt and angry, justifiably so. But it's not Amazon's fault. Until we address the issue of bullying in schools, we are going to keep losing children to suicide. What's really sad to me is that there's been no progress on that front for years. My oldest is 40 years old. He came out in the 8th grade. What resulted was a catastrophe. Tried changing schools which made it better but the damage was done. He tried to take his life 3 times. Thank God he failed at it but the schools don't seem to have gotten any better. It's always "tell them to ignore it" or "don't worry about their opinion" but that puts the responsibility for it on the child being bullied. How about talking to the bullies and their parents?? How about some repercussions for the ones who terrorize others like that?

When my son was 10, his personality started to change. I KNEW something was wrong, i sat him down and asked him. He was being bullied. I took care of it, he went on to be his happy self again. When he turned 15, i found an obituary he was writing for himself. I immediately asked him what was going on. He was depressed. I took him to a mental facility and he was admitted for a month. He got counseling and got better. He is 35 now, and ok.
I feel for this mom and the other families, but these people would have found ways to get it done, unfortunately. We HAVE to be diligent in paying attention to our children i know it's not always easy to spot things, but it seems children do change in personality when they are younger & bad things are happening in their lives. I don't want to blame this momma or any other parent because we can't be with them 24/7, but we must pay attention. I see parents sending their children to school when they are constantly being bullied, then that child commits S. WHY, WHY would you send you child somewhere where this is happening??? That is just one example of paying attention to your kids. I am no expert, but we have to be in tune with our kids.

And anyways, any product, in large enough quantities, will be dangerous to the human body and can be found very easily... either online or on a shelf.

There are no legal purchasing restrictions on it just like there are no purchasing restrictions on bleach or multitudes of other non-FDA approved chemicals that can kill you. A 10 year-old can go to the supermarket and walk out with a gallon of Clorox. If you buy and ingest something that's not made to be ingested, that's your fault. I believe this mother has a legitimate case. If I was selling something that was dangerous to children and I would be told that it was, even if I lost money on the product, I would have tried to find a solution… Stop, think, reevaluate, find a way to keep it out of children’s hands. Much love and respect for these heartbroken parents.

I lost my siblings to taking their lives, I’m the baby at 49. I’m now 54 and I’ve outlived my siblings. It’s horrific for all of us but we’re not suing the alcohol industry or gun manufacturers. Ultimately, it was up to them and their choice to live or fight. When someone you love is in such a deep hole of despair, you jump in with a rope and pray they come up with you. You beg. You plead. Ultimately, it’s their choice though. And then you mourn and accept your new wretched reality. Or if you’re successful in getting them out of the hole, encourage them every step of the way with nothing but unconditional love and support. I’m so sorry this happened to these family’s, truly I am. Suing a company for something others use responsibly is not going to bring their loved one back nor is it going to prevent anyone from taking their own life. Hug your children, play games at the table, be an active part of their lives, know what they are watching, playing, doing…if you see a shift in behaviour, act on it immediately. I don’t believe in suicide prevention, you can watch someone 24/7 and if they truly can’t live anymore they will do it.

Better to help them via profesionals and being there to listen/talk to them to help their depression.
