    Your loose expressive style is so beautiful Tom! The paintings behind you drew me in. Do you offer full length tutorials on watercolour painting birds like those behind you in this video (the owl and flying birds) in large format on your patreon site? I'm wanting to learn how to loosen up my style and also paint much larger than I do now--half sheet to full sheet watercolour paper size.

    • @tomshepherdartist
      @tomshepherdartist  4 года назад +1

      Thanks so much!! There's a few on my Patreon channel. There will definitely be more to come though. Keep an eye over the next few months as I will be doing some bigger watercolour bird tutorials over on Patreon, and more in general, so that's probably your best bet. I am also working on a downloadable long tutorial, but that won;t be out for another 6 months or so...but basically there's a bit all ready, with lots more to come !!:)

    I'm loving this series. I've been trying to paint some birds using your videos as reference.
    I'm using pans not tubes. I struggle to mix neat paints and get a buttery consistency. Any advice on how to best do so when using pans?

    • @tomshepherdartist
      @tomshepherdartist  3 года назад

      So glad you are enjoying them!! It is definitely harder to get that consistency with pans. You won't get the literal neat paint where we using the paint straight out of the tube, but you can get close with pans. The secret is to add just enough water to re-activate the paint, to create a slightly buttery consistency, but not so much that it is watering the paint down. As soon as the pans are swimming in water, which does happy as a painting goes on,this becomes harder. You could use kitchen roll or similar to pull out the water and get to the thicker paint....or I often kept a stiffer brush on hand that allowed me to literally dig into the pan a little bit and get some much heavier pigment out, then add that to my mixtures :)...hope that helps...T

      @@tomshepherdartist Thank you :-)
      I'll give it a shot.
      I've tried a kingfisher, bee-eater, magpie, the ep2 raven and a flamingo so far.

    I love watching your videos. Can you use 300 pound paper for watercolor?

    • @tomshepherdartist
      @tomshepherdartist  3 года назад

      Thanks so much. I sometimes use 300lb for bigger piece. I love because it’s soo heavy and thick, but it does take paint and water slightly differently.

    Tom. Thank you for the series. Could you tell me exactly what type of brush is the #16?

    • @tomshepherdartist
      @tomshepherdartist  3 года назад

      Hi Brian. Yes, the #16 in this video is called a Da Vinci Cosmotop - this is part synthetic part natural, they do a cosmotop spin which is totally synthetic and more springy. Since this video I actually now use a size 18 mop brush called the Escoda Ultimo. Hope that helps. T
