Funny thing happened this weekend: went camping and found a spot which was sparsely covered with trees. No two trees close enough to rig a hammock. I ened up in the tent with my friend. Completely forgot about this video which would have worked splendidly, as there were several fallen trees I could have used for the post/pole half of the hammock. I'll certainly remember for next time! And thank you for the great idea and video, varavild!
WOW at first i was like ehhh its ok its gonna prob fall over.....but when you actually demonstrated a "fake wind" i was pretty blown away today i grew a new wrinkle in my brain thanks to you.......thanks for the lesson
Ya this is a great example of some principles of physics being demonstrated. Beds in some sailing ships and the suspension systems for some circus performers acts use similar setups. But you sir also got all the knots to work! Good one Peter.
fromkentucky - I agree, there was more than enough rope to set up two separate lines between the pole and the fallen tree. I understand that it can be done with one line, but why invite Murphy into your campsite? just as hard as finding a second tree is finding something that is solid enough to anchor to. Seriously if i only had one tree I would just rig the tarp in a diamond shelter and sleep on the ground for one night.
Cool. I had a hard time believing that it wouldn't just fall over until I thought it through. The tension in the rope (when it goes from side to side) always pulls you back to center. Thanks!
Just getting interested in having a go at a hammock but the vids I've seen were from U.S Canada. Had concerns about our types of trees in Oz. You just provided the answer. Thanks.
Very interesting Peter. I often find the perfect campsite but the trees are too close or too far apart! Now I know how to take advantage of the perfect spot. Thanks to you! All the best Hej Sandy
Crazy! I have one tree in my backyard and a big wooden pole. I always wanted to try this method you teach but didn't know if it would work. Now that I see it works, I'm going to setup my hammock in my backyard. Thanks for the info video man! Subbed ya!
Thanks! That is a Gerber Gator Jr. I Modified it though by welding in the saw so it has a bit more mass to it and is now great for batonning too. Take care!
Hi Peter this is a great demo, really neat, and well executed. simple and very effective knots! thats coming from a rock climber! keep up the good work, liking the videos
i have not been in the situation where i have needed to do that but i will try your setup a few times to see how it works just in case the situation arrises someday , good video it looks pretty affective
Holy crap, I saw the thumbnail picture and thought you found another of those 20+ foot super snakes that got loose in Florida! I was relieved to find a hammock video!
Thank you. The same principle can be used in many applications. Like for instance when you have one corner of your tarp not lining up with a tree. Just the tree and a pole standing at an angle. Take care.
Very interesting :) If I was to try this, and had the cordage, for my own piece of mind I would have to add a couple guy lines to that support pole to keep it upright. im sure you are correct it wont fall but that's just too wobbly for my taste.
That is a DD Travel Hammock with a DD Tarp. Very good setup. Alternatives are Hennessy, And Mosquito Jungle Hammock from Tom Claytor. I use the Claytor too and it too is great.
I suggest you try it ;-) It can only fall over if the hammock would be long enough so the pole can pivot all the way to the ground. As long as a triangle is maintained it just can't fall over.
what if you tied the pole to the long with two lengths of rope? have them tied to the same point on the pole and then tied to the tree with approx 8ft of log between the two ropes? Just a thought! great vid!
Sure but i wanted that spot! :-) Bit of artistic license as we have so many trees. The technique is not only for just one tree it is also great if you have two but they are to far apart. The Travel hammock is great and I have been using it for ages. It is our best selling hammock too. Yes it is the 3m x 3m DD Tarp.
Hi varavild! I have seen a couple of your videos and have learned a lot! I just had one question about this video.... What kind of "knife" did you use to chop the point on the end of that log? I am looking for a machete that can do the duty of a hatchet and that thing looks more than capable. Please let me know! Thanks.
Having another tool (i.e. idea) in your hammock 'toolbox' is always a good thing. Thanks for sharing.
I have tried. It works. 2 nights in hammock with only one tree. Thanks for the tutorial.
Well done! I used my Hammock like a bivy but never thought it could hang just from one tree! Well explained!

Very Very impressive Now I don't ever have to worry about hammock camping ever again !!! great vid.
This is really informative, useful, and was entertaining to watch! Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge.
This guy deserves a thumbs up.

If people are really worried about stability, you could easily add a third rope from the pole to the anchor log, creating a big triangle.

Valuable tip.
I would never think that would work, but you put it to the test, super great job.
Greg.

Very interesting. Great ingenuity and a handy video. Thanks for spending The time to producing it! Andy

That was good, Vara, I really need to learn the trucker's hitch! Thanks. Oh, greetings from Puerto Rico!

OH MY GOSH! This BLEW MY MIND! seriously thank you so much im going to do this!
I was wondering how you would pitch the hammock.
Very impressive, out -of -the -box solution. Great video.
Cool deal, I will remember this setup in the future.
Outstanding!!! Great tip. I'm going to try that next time I go hiking.
Well done, Peter! Great idea!
Holy crap, I saw the thumbnail picture and thought you found another of those 20+ foot super snakes that got loose in Florida! I was relieved to find a hammock video!
I like to plant a tree and simply come back in 10 years.
Awesome! I'm heading out with my Hennessy next weekend and this was a very useful video! Thank you kindly :)
Very interesting. If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, I wouldn't have believed it.
Thank you. The same principle can be used in many applications. Like for instance when you have one corner of your tarp not lining up with a tree. Just the tree and a pole standing at an angle. Take care.
i just had to try your set up today, worked great. thanks brother.

That set up can come in handy. Thank you for showing it!
Great demo thanks for sharing
Excellent video, Well done. I guess I'll have to work on my knots. Maybe you will demonstrate that sometime soon for us tenderfoots..
That is really impressive.
Gr8 idea, love the tarp set up also
You are very welcome Andy! Thanks.
Thanks! I am from Sweden. Take care my friend!

Tack för tipset. Väldigt användbart.
Bo
Well, I hope you do as it's a lovely way to camp. Thanks and take care!
You are welcome! Happy Holidays!
Very cool Bro! Now thats some good working with what you have! Who needs two trees?
Thank you for your support!
Thanks! Yeah the truckers hitch is a very useful knot. Tae care!
Peter
Very nice video great idea! I needed this because two good trees are lot harder to find here as well! Liked & subbed you!!
Thanks! Its a cool setup to do. Good luck!
You are welcome. Its fun to try!
Ha Ha. It's a weird thing to do but it works like a charm. Even if you have two trees you can use this if they are too far appart. All the best!
I suggest you try it ;-) It can only fall over if the hammock would be long enough so the pole can pivot all the way to the ground. As long as a triangle is maintained it just can't fall over.
Very nice set up.
@Ggreenvideos Thanks Rich, glad you liked it.
Thanks! You will see it works great. Good luck!
Very clever!
Great system. Thanks for sharing.

Hey man, you rock. Would it be more stable if you had 2 lines on the pole? Then it wouldn't rock back and forth?
Thanks for the vid.
Woody
Glad you liked it! Stay safe!

@steintanz Thanks Tim, glad you liked it.
That's pretty nice. What's the name of that hitch you tied on the pole? I couldn't make it out from the video.
On the pole I just uses two siberian hitches (in series. Make sure you use the right ends for the second!!)
Nice work buddy
Thank you! Stay safe.
@busycando Thanks Greg. It works pretty good actually.Much more stable than you would think.

THank you , i was thinking to myself a few days ago what if i cant find two trees? Is a hamock what i want and yes it is! Great channel!
You are welcome! Thanks!
I do, in fact, trust my knots. Oh, and I trust my nuts also. But it's rare that someone cares enough to state it outright, so thanks for that!
Very cool,from Indianapolis.
Great vid, well shot. Very informative. Thank you. Did you make that hammock yourself?
Siberian hitch. I'll look that up. Nice video, thx.
I Always wanted to try that setup, Now you have given me the Confidence to do so. .Thank you! (I have Sub.d you) .Tony.
Great video friend! Thanks
Great vid!
@BoIwar Thanks, glad you liked it. (Det var så lite)
Great skills. Thank You for sharing it.
Thank you! Take care.
is this more sturdy then a tripod-setup?
An engineering marvel!
Thanks. Hope it worked out my friend.
Nice set up.
hey! great idea!! i can't wait to try it. do u think this would work on both sides:?
You are very welcome!
Yeah, logically one understands it works but climbing in, one starts to doubt :-) (luckily the logic is right). Thanks for watching
That's just great - thanks a lot!
@phreshayr Thanks, glad you liked it.
A very well used knot in my case. Thanks!
what about getting proper 30 degree hang? Would it not be easier with two poles lashed together and spread and then run suspension over top.
Neat trick, I never thought of that,
Ha Ha, Thanks Tony. If the setup keeps me off the ground it will keep most off the ground :-) Thanks for your support my friend!
@ekhaat Glad you tried it. Doing is believing. Thank my friend.
Excellent ! Thanks
You are welcome my friend!
where do you get the mosquito net for the top of the hammock
Superb...Thanks for posting. Never tried this, but will soon. Cheers ;-))
Could you do this with no tree and have a post on both sides?
really neat!
