The first thing I look at inaking a baseball bet is indeed the starting pitchers match-up.
I'm doing that I always check out the pitchers last three starts.
You may see a pitcher with a 4.87 era but in his prior three game , that pitcher may have pitched at least 6innings giving up no more than 2earm runs in either of the three games.
In that case , depending on who that pitchers is pitching against and the quality of the team, I would fade that pitcher in my first five inning wager.
If you watched the Houston/Yankees series or the braves/dodger series and made your wager base on each games starting pitchers... You would hit the under in 7/8 games first (5) inning.
I'm a big prominent that if you are using the starting pitcher matchup as the main reference to placing a baseball bet, I would recommend your bet be made in the first (5) innings , including ov/un

Agree, in this day and age in baseball, if you are betting who wins/loses the actual 9 inn game you need to consider bullpen strength of each team almost more so than starting pitcher. A lot of scoring and blown leads happen during the 7th, 8th and 9th inning, especially in close games.

field independent pitching. it is a stat based on the pitcher's performance alone, without counting the help from the field.
Strikeouts, Hitting the batter, unintended walks on balls, those are things that a pitcher can control. ERA is based on Earned Runs, so it measures only runs, but but unearned runs like those based on errors.
personally, I still look at ERA, K/BB and W/L but also track the no-decision scores.

SIERA, Skill Integrated Earned Run Average, is an ERA estimator stat that tries to get rid of factors that the pitcher can’t control. This gets a more accurate look at what an ERA should be and you can compare to their actual ERA. Thanks for commenting, David.
