I have the single handed Spey lines as well and I think I saw somewhere they’re 2+ line over wt with the intent of one false cast and shoot the head. But yeah it generally overloads the rod if you try casting it normally. It also has a long running section for shooting your roll/Spey cast. If you haven’t shot it by the time that section is out, it breaks down the cast. I may switch to a more roll cast designed line in the future but it does go pretty far once you get used to where the running section is.
Thanks. I'm going to have to learn to one handed spey and head down to the casting ponds. I suspect though, if it's as you say, 2 line weights heavy, it's going to overpower my cane rod. Mario Wojnicki and Erik Peterson both believe the rod is a 3wt, though I prefer a 4wt line on it.
Awesome catch at 12:10. The ultimate thrill of catching a Golden in the Sierra's. The hike between the two lakes reminded me of the hike from Hilton Lake #7 to Hilton Lake #10 and to Stanford Lake. That was 95% jumping from boulder to boulder with deep crevasses between the boulders. It was worth it to catch a Golden Trout.
Thanks! Yeah, I’ve made some interesting treks for Goldens. Haven’t fished the upper Hilton Lakes though. It’s one of those things I keep putting off. I do enjoy those purple fish in Hilton 4 I think it is. It’s been a while. :)
@@highcountrychronicles My time in the Hiltons was back in the early 80's. We went in horses and pack mules out of Rock Creek. Setup camp at #3. Stay for about 10 days fishing from Hilton #2 to Hilton #10. You can bring in quite a fishing kit with pack mules. I backpacked to the Hiltons in late 80's a few times. We only caught Goldens at #10 and Stanford. Caught purple rainbows in #3 and #5. Caught Brooks and Browns in #2.
Cool. I've always planned a trip to #7. It will happen one of these days. I just looked at a map and it was 3 I was thinking of. Caught brookies in 4 and 5 but have never been past 5.... I used to just day hike it in but it probably been 10 years or so since I've made the trip. My buddy was talking about going into Davis this year. He want's a big brown. LOL. We'll see.
You got to watch out for those marmots! Is that Little French Lake or a pond? Cherry frosted poptarts are great, I've had more than I should over the years haha
LOL. Day 4 I have some issues with rodents. I suspect squirrels. :D Yeah, Little French lake was more pond sized. I miss the unfrosted Cherry. But of the flavors widely available, I'd agree. Cherry is currently the best, most consistent. The blueberry that I brought with me weren't the best. :(
By rep I would go with North Side. I've never been though. The south side lakes seem to be a shadow of their former glory. That said, they're still fun! Originally I had planned to do a mix of North and South but a buddy convinced me to make the North a separate trip. South got the nod more so because their history than superior fishing.
I do. I carry a Spot Gen 3 satellite messenger. You might be able to see it on the pack as I crest the ridge up to Star Lake. Typically I keep it in a pocket on my pack belt. When I think I might need it, I’ll move it to the shoulder strap. It’s the bright orange box on my shoulder. I use it daily, in the mornings and evenings to let my family know where I am and that I’m ok. I’ve also used it to signal that I was coming home early and that I need a pick up. With the exception of one year where Spot reset my messages (thus causing a panic at home) it’s worked well for 10+ years.
@@highcountrychronicles it’s a no name lake at the foot of Mount Clarence King, in King’s Canyon park. It sits at 10315 elevation hence the nickname. Super remote and hard to get to. Cedar Grove trailhead is the closest. Supposed to be phenomenal fishing!
Your videos are nice Jim, but why give away the secrets ? My boyfriend digs as digs online for this info and other fishers will give clues but nothing exact locations of the great fish. So I ask, what motivates you to share online and potentially crowd these spots ? Genuinely curious, I understand the desire to record an amazing trip like this but why share it across social media ? These spots you know and love could be totally jam packed with people.
Alisha, these spots are very well known. I'm not giving away any secrets here at all. Really. For the uninitiated it may not seem that way. Puppet Lake for instance. Not a secret. Well known as a big fish lake but getting a rep for no longer producing fish. I got skunked at Puppet. If anything, I think that discourages people. When I do fish a sensitive area, I don't given out the location. Sometimes even for well known and very heavily fished areas. (See Day 5- no location given. See my small stream video- no location given. "A Tail of Hail and Char"- No location given. I could go on... In these cases, I don't think there's any harm in showing fish being caught in beautiful places.) Frankly, nearly half the people I met on my trip were headed to the "secret big fish lake" which I didn't go to but obviously, not a secret. I've been chronicling my fishing on the internet for nearly 25 years. All those places that I've kept secret are now popular and not by me as I never revealed their identity. Not even close. I appreciate your concern but in this case it's misplaced. In this specific video there is nothing that would be considered secret. This video gives visual context to what is already well known, easy to find. Know that if I think a video is getting too much attention, I pull it. Also know that when I catch large fish, I'll often obscure the location of where I actually catch them. So I'm not catching them where you might think I'm catching them. ;)
Nice video I enjoyed this thanks!!!👍👍👍👍👍👍
@@FieldWorxoverlandadventures Thank you! Glad to hear it!
I just recently found Jim on here and I love his work on here........
Thanks! Glad to hear that you are enjoying the content. :)
Good stuff
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
Really fun recap. I always appreciate your real-time beta on your routes and your thoughtfulness on fly choices and approaching the water.
Thanks! I appreciate the kind words!

Appreciate your video. My son and I have been a ridge short of Puppet and excited one day to reach the area(s) you explored. Thanks!
Thanks! Glad you liked it. It’s a beautiful area.
Looks like an awesome day 2. Glad you made it up that rock slide!
Thanks! Yeah, never as tough in retrospect as it seems in the moment. Lol. Wait until you see what happened on day 5. LOL.

Yeah, I had both frosted blueberry and cherry....
So out of all the lakes in the Basin, would you recommend those on the South side of French Canyon or the North side (Royce Lakes) for fishing?

You do some pretty hardcore trips solo. Do you carry a satellite communicator or personal locator beacon?

Jim have you ever been to lake 10315 in King’s canyon? I want to go there on day!
No, I haven't. What's the story on it?

Thanks. The first one had me in the middle of the ocean. What sort of fish is it supposed to have?
Majority of people in Sierras don't fish anymore
Probably not, which is a shame. More for me though. :D
