There was no particular shortage of housing in 2019 and into 2020. This has not changed, except to the degree that the lockdowns, inflation and high crime made it difficult for people to remain in their home. These problems are tools of war against the ability of people to stay in their homes in the cities, and it is a war against the industries to which they belong. They are tools meant to create a fearful, uprooted populace, which gives the federal government an occasion to take control of housing, and to "provide" more housing to those who "need" it.
This government provision and control of housing always means expansion of the number of houses built, and control of more land, both of which means greater control over where and how people live. The goal is to simultaneously decrease industry, while increasing the population and costs of living in the suburbs and rural America. This creates increases in home/property values, with more people in more homes who do not belong in them. These things feed off of each other and create a vicious escalation on multiple fronts. This amounts to a sugar-high for home builders, who are often behind the housing schemes, and an economic crash, such as the 2008 housing market collapse. These are the results of when the government makes housing a 'mission', as it did in 2005. Government-engineered housing often means government-subsidized housing, which includes subsidies to the builders and developers who are instrumental in the scheme.
In contrast is true, free-market housing; Far less houses are built, yet with both industry and rural America being preserved, because the people have the freedom to remain in the places that they truly call home.

He has called Social Security and Medicare “the biggest roadblocks to real fiscal sanity.”
