This design is more suitable for tractors and off roads as it is meant for performance over muffling. If you want your generator to be quiet, then you have to get a different type of muffler. Thank you for the comment.
Clean build, if I may say welding galvanized steel is extremely dangerous the fumes are highly toxic and can kill Just a shout out to you viewers. I enjoyed the video
Good morning sir, I agree, welding galvanized steel can lead to health problems. I always try to grind the welding area, weld outdoor (where the wind will keep the smoke away) or use fume extractor. Thank you for the comment and for watching.
The skidder I used to run had the exhaust pipe follow the ROPS all the way back to the roof so it wouldn't get torn off when plowing through low branches and such...just a thought. Nice build!!
Good morning sir, you are 100% correct. I actually built one before the one in the video and it got damaged from trees hitting it when I dug the pond. Thank you for the tip, the comment and have a great day.
Look into how Flowmaster makes their baffles which they call the Delta flow technology ! I made a home made muffler for my old Jiffy gas powered ice auger for ice fishing which uses a 2 stroke Techumse engine & they only come with a small steel plate with a slot cut through them as a muffler which isn't very quiet at all ! I basically took this plate then used a 6 inch piece of 2 inch pipe with the ends cut off & drilled the holes needed for the plate to breath through then welded those 2 together & added sections of steel V cut up like the Flow Master design with the smallest first then making them wider at the end then an exhaust hole at the end & bottom after I welded ends on each end . Once done I was able to just bolt it on then started it up & it's much quieter but had to tune the carburetor settings for low & high speed mix & it works great lol . The way they are stock from the factory is like a open pipe so they are loud as heck compared to the new ice augers especially the 4 strokes out now but now it's much quieter & didn't cost me anything for materials because I had that & just the time to make it & some electricity & welding wire for the welder . I was on here watching other various ways to make exhaust baffles for a chrome Harley Davidson pipe I put on my 17.5 Sears OHV lawn tractor mower because the stock muffler after 20 plus years finally rusted out so I made this pipe work but need to make a baffle for it now to quiet it down more & ran across your video so I think I will probably go this route on making a baffle but use some stainless steel wool to pack into it as well to tame it down even more ! Great job on making this & the video !
Hello Pete, thank you for the nice and informative comment, I built a muffler in the past very similar to the “delta flow”. I installed it on Suzuki samurai, I am planning to post a series of videos regarding home made mufflers that are easy and cheap to make. Mufflers are cheap these days, however, sometimes you have to custom make them for specific application just like you did when you build your own. Thank for the comment and have a great day.
I am going to build a larger one for my dump truck very soon. The way I installed it on the bulldozer was to help with preference. Make it where you can change the direction as if you install it the other way, it will be less noisy but the engine may lose some preference. Good luck with your compressor build. Thank you for watching and for the comment.
This is a great video, but based on learning about exhaust engineering if performance is a requirement then you would want a design where the slotted indentations bend outward instead of inward, thus preserving the pipe diameter flow. At lower rpm it will absorb greater, at higher rpm it will create air cushions that will allow less resistance and better flow through than even a straight pipe. How? I would cut the pipe in half lengthwise and punch out the slots from the inside. Then weld or clamp back together.
Thank you for the comment and the information. I am planning to post more homemade mufflers video very soon, I am just getting things set up for it. I will cover several types of easy to make mufflers and will test each one for loudness and performance. Thank you
@@jeromebreeding3302 Hello Jerome, Actually the first time I saw a glass pack was on a motorcycle. If you want it to be as quite as possible, make it as long as possible. Glass pack are not so good at sound reduction, however they are great when it comes to engine performance. Please keep me updated on the result! I appreciate your comment and thank you for watching.
That’s such amazing video specially since I’ve been looking for someone who can explain the functions of an exhaust and how to make it plus your explanation on how dose the shape and material affect the sound thank you so much!!!
You came up with a good design, good mufflers arent cheap, i'm personaly trying to come up with a home made muffler and you answered some questions for me, now all ive got to do is buy a welder, i'll be replacing a catalytic convertor on my chevy pickup truck, for the short term but i intend on getting a legal cat. Converter for it when i can get the $
Good morning sir, if you replace the catalytic converter with anything other than a catalytic converter you will get a check engine light. The muffler I showed in this video is more suited for off-road vehicles. Thank you for watching
Glasswool reduces noise better, stainless steel wool lasts longer. Don't use steel wool. The idea of a glass pack is for performance or if you want to get the sport car sound (make sure it is legal in your area). You can use glasswool, stainless steel wool or no material to get different sound/performance. I only use it for off-road vehicles. Thank you for watching
To reduce the noise, you must make the muffler larger in length and point the cuts in the internal pipe to the exhaust of the generator (opposite of what I did in the video). Make sure the internal pipe size is the same as the generator original exhaust to minimize heat while you get sound reduction. You may also have to build a large box to contain the generator and cover the inside of the box with fiberglass to help reduce the other noises that are generated by the generator.
Good morning, if you do it exactly like I showed in the video (the direction of the vents) it will give you the highest performance. In between each piston compression cycle, it will create a low pressure to help the next cycle. However, this will make it loud, not as loud as a straight pipe, but loud. If you change the direction of the vents, it will reduce the noise but not as good as far as performance because it will create back pressure. I hope this answers your questions.
I also forgot to add, you can use stainless steel muffler packing it will cause the muffler to produce deeper sound (sport) or use the fiberglass for the best sound reduction. Or if you want a very loud sport sound, then don't use any packing material. Don't use regular steel wool. Thank you for the support. I appreciate it.
It made me happy to realize the red on your hands were from the paint (I chose to believe so) Good job... Got a project for later where this might help... Thank you!
Good evening sir, the red paint was from the red marker. I am going to post few videos about homemade mufflers very soon, i am going to detail the builds with better camera and will test each for preference and sounds. Thank you for the comment,
Any type of muffler will not reduce noise without creating some back pressure. The design of this muffler is for performance and will not cause a lot of back pressure and may create vacuum between the exhaust cycle of the cylinders to help with the engine preference, however at the exhaust moment it may cause back pressure. I was at a car show a long time ago and there was a company showing their line of mufflers and one of their engineers was explaining the benefits of the back pressure on noise reduction. Personally I believe the only thing that doesn't cause back pressure is a straight pipe. What do you think?
You are right, install it the other way will make it quieter. However, quieter muffler will reduce performance. The way I installed it, it is for preference and just to reduce the rumble of the exhaust. In the future, I am going to build few types of glass mufflers and will monitor the sound, engine performance and heat. Thank you for watching
very well done, great welds and everything, this may work nice as a performance exhaust on my boat, even without the fiber glass I am sure its quieter.
In the old days, guys with sport cars, used to remove the fiber glass to get deeper and loader sound.this design is for performance and not for reducing the sound. If you install it the opposite direction with fiber glass, you will get sound reduction at the cost of performance. Thank you for watching and for the nice comment.
4:45 just take a piece of paper or tape, wrap around the circumference, fold it in half 3 times and you'll have eight divisions. You can then use this as a template to slide up and down the tape for layout
That is some quality metal work. The cutting, punching, and welding are clean and smooth. Nice job. How many hours would you estimate this took? How many hours would it take someone who does not have your skill level? Have you tried phone apps or a sound meter to measure the sound differences?
Hello Thomas, Thank you for the nice comment. It took me about 2 hours to manufacture the muffler (filming it made it a little longer), I would say, if you know how to weld, how to use the grinder, and you have all the material, then it should be about two hours. I am planning to purchase a sound meter and I am going to post videos in the near future about how to build several type of muffler for different types of engines in detail as there is a high interest in the RUclips community about home made mufflers. Please note: Glass Pack mufflers are efficient, make the most power out of your engine, and easy to make, however, they do not provide good muffling, especially if you are trying to muffle an engine like a generator near your house. Hope this helped.
Nicely done, only one problem, you have the airflow going through the pipe the wrong way, try it the other way and you will see a big difference. What i once did was a compromise that worked well, the first half with the cutouts going one way and the second half with the cutouts going the other way.
Hello, I built one just like the one in the video back in the 90s and installed it on a my car. I tried it both ways. One direction was quieter but the engine was loaded or there was more back pressure the engine was getting warmer when driving up hill. The other direction was louder but the engine was running better and cooler. On tractors and off road vehicles the glass pack should be installed as I demonstrated. Road going vehicles have to meet certain noise level restrictions and therefore they install the glass pack to meet those standards. This creates more back pressure and little bit loss of performance. There are other options of using holes on the pipe which will give you in the middle results. I am going to upload videos in the future about homemade mufflers and I am going to test everything for the viewers. Thank you for the comment and thank you for watching.

Just saw this. As always, nice work! Would be great for motorcycles also. Different widths and lengths depending on desired back pressure, decibels and tone.
If you make it with the depressions in the pipe with half of them facing towards the engine and the other half facing towards the exit of the pipe it will work a lot better at silencing

I made a muffler in the past similar in shape to firearm silencer. I tried it in both directions. The glass pack is better. I am currently working on a dump truck project, once I am done with it. I am going to build several types of mufflers that I built in the past or thought about building for cars, equipment or single cylinder engine. I am going to do my best to record it for youtube and will show the pros and cons of each type. Thank you
I have a question. You turned it I guess upside down. The exhaust flow does not go into the opening which you hammered. Yet it does silence the sound so much? I have glasspacks currently on that do not too much for me. I got the opening facing the engine so the exhaust flow is caught and forced into the fiberglass. Am i doing it wrong?
Hello, by design (for sound reduction), you installed it correctly, the way you installed it (if the muffler you installed was built for your size engine with good quality packing material) it should give the best results as far as sound reduction. I built one just like the one in the video back in the 90s and installed it on a my car. I tried it both ways. One direction was quieter but the engine was loaded or there was more back pressure the engine was getting warmer when driving up hill. @@SalamSayhood Thanks for the quick reply. Its a loud engine and exhaust. 460ci with dual 3.5" inch downpipe into a 3" glasspacks, dont remember the length. Maybe i was just hoping for better results. Thanks again
Nice ford engine. I had a chevy malibu model 1978. I installed two homemade glass pack (one on each side). I believe I used 2" pipe (it has been a long time ago) I didn't use any packing material in the glass pack and it sounded great (sporty). The only negative thing was when coming down hill, the engine breaking was too much. When I sold it, it went quickly because of the sound. I remember the guy who bought it said so :)
At the time 8:51 shows the correct direction of exhaust flow like little scoops into the glass. Time at 8:33 shows the red arrow is pointing the wrong direction. Baffles are air scoops like little shovels. You scoop the air. He has the baffle backwards .

@@SalamSayhood never restrict in any way a four stroke motor. Only 2 stroke motors require an expansion chamber and back Pressure . The diagram that was drawn on paper was correct. Except the flow was backwards. There were 2 chambers in it. In the glass pack you designed was one single chamber and flow backwards.
We both talking about the same thing. I think there is a misunderstanding. The cuts are pointing away from the engine. I reviewed the video and both timing marks that you posted in your comment are showing what I just said.
If some fresh air is induced in the main exhaust by putting small holes at bottom end it would decrease resistance and fresh air will be siphoned in to make exhaust gasses cleaner.
I have mine on my bulldozer for a few years now and it's still good. You can hear it in many of my videos. Please keep in mind, this is for off road vehicles to boost performance. Thank you for your comment and Happy New Year.
Hello, There are three type of material they use for the glass pack, fiberglass, stainless steel wool and ceramic. The packing material must be high heat resistant. Fiberglass is the cheapest and when new it work the best, stainless is the less effective in sound reduction but it will work for longer time than the other packing material. Don't use steel wool or anything is not rated for muffler packing. They sale the muffler packing material online, for 2 stroke and for 4 stoke engine. I hope this answer your question.
Hello, I like it too, however, running the dozer for hours with the straight pipe and ear plugs will get annoying. I still wear ear plugs with the muffler but the sound in much more tolerable. Thank you for watching.
To make a gun silencer, get a tube (3 mm thick) and create small metal cups (3 mm thick too). Probably, 10-12 cups, bore holes in the middle of the cups (depending on the calibre of your bullets), and weld the cups 1 cm apart inside the tube. The base of the cups should face the muzzle of your gun.
Bass frequencies carry a lot of energy and travel further. Sound system engineers and musicians know this well. If the bass sound is converted into treble frequencies, this could sound louder up close, but dissipate the sound with distance. Any thought about this when developing a muffler?
It is muffler packing. It is available for 4 strokes and 2 strokes engine. You can use one of these: Fiberglass muffler packing. Ceramic muffler packing. Stainless steel muffler packing. While the fiberglass give the best sound reduction for this performance muffler, the stainless steel packing will last longer. Thank you for watching
Good afternoon, I don't sell them. However, I am planning to build one soon for my 4 wheeler and I am going to record the complete process. Thank you for watching.
@@SalamSayhood I see. Well since you're doing one anyway, is there any way you could build another one and then sell that one to me? I need it for hunting.
I appreciate your interest 😊 however, I have no current plans to sell mufflers, also the glass pack isn't a good choice to get quiet operation for hunting. The glass pack is a preference type muffler. You can add a car muffler at the end of your Polaris exhaust pipe and this should quite the sound. Thank you.

@@SalamSayhood You can also get it from Grainger. I think 24 x 60 x 1 was $31... might be wrong, but cheap and in stock . We use it in a metal melting furnace for casting. Thanks for the video, looking for ideas to quiet the aftermarket pipes the previous owner placed on my bike. Good info!!
At the end of the video I showed the straight pipe sound against this glass pack muffler. In the future (I have few projects to finish first 😆) I am going to experiment with more muffler designs, I bought a sound level meter to be able to show the results. The camera captures good sound, however the sound meter will give more accurate information. When it comes to mufflers, the goal isn't for sound reduction but also for engine performance. I will also be checking for that and for heat. Thank you for watching and for the nice comment.
Good morning sir, I am sorry, I don't have access to the requested vehicle, however I am going to build a muffler for my 4 wheeler, dump truck and my generator. Please stay tuned for that as I have to finish with my dump truck project first. Thank you for watching.
I really like the design, with the slit cut then punch. If I do it, I’ll reverse the flow so it’s directed towards the fiber glass packing. I feel like it would be quieter.
Good morning, you are right, I tried that in the past. The way I installed it, the engine performance is better and louder. If installed like you mentioned, the engine will be quieter. I am planning to do this experiment in the future and will show it on RUclips. Thank you for watching and for the comment. Have a great day.
Good morning David, it shouldn't restrict air flow if it is built with the internal pipe the same size pipe as the engine exhaust pipe. Thank you for watching.
Would this work for an exhaust on predator 212cc 6.5hp engine ? I am using one on a drift trike and we are having a competition of sorts so i gotta out do the guys and i think an 18" glasspack muffler hanging off an exhaust pipe would be friggin hilarious! But if it won't work i am just gonna look like a dumbass ...lol...thought i would ask first
Good morning, if you build it like I did, it will boost the preference just a little (on 6.5HP, 4 stroke, single piston engine) however the sound will very based on the pipe size, the cuts and angles of the slots and the type of packing (stainless steel, fiberglass or ceramic muffler packing). If you install it where the cuts pointing to the other direction, then you get quiter sound but this will decrease the performance. You can also try it without any packing and this will make it sound more sporty :)
Hello Kevin, are you asking if glass pack muffler will work with lawn mower? If so, the answer is yes, most of them with 4 stroke engines are sold with glass pack design muffler. If you like to build your own stuff, then this will be a fun project. If you are not setup to build it, then it maybe cheaper to buy a muffler from tractor supply or online store. Make sure you get the right size for your machine. Thank you for watching.

Yes sir, I am planning to redo this tutorial and it’s going to be a part of several mufflers and I will do in depth of all the techniques that I use. Please stay tuned.
Thank you sir. The glass pack can be used safety with any type of engine. If I ever get an excavator, I will be the one to build my own muffler for it :)
Hello, glass back in general is loud, However, they are better than straight pipe in two area: they are quieter than straight pipe and better for the engine. Quieter mufflers not a good choice for heavy equipment as they put load on the engine. I am planning to post videos in the near future about quieter mufflers, best of luck
I build glass back and used them on cars before, it will be little louder than the stock muffler, more on the sport cars side. Good luck man and have a great weekend.
Hello, I appreciate all the comments. Hopefully I will be able to continue to answer all of them. Thank you for your comment and thank you for watching.
Thank you for the comment. The glass pack always cause debate on which direction it should be installed. I experimented with it in the past and this should explain it: If you install it in the direction I showed: the glass pack will last longer, you have less back pressure, engine run cooler and louder. If you install it the other way: the glass pack packing material will degrade faster, you will have more back pressure, the engine will warm up faster and it will be quieter. If you use a drilled pipe in the center instead of what I made: you will be in the middle of the above two options. I hope this was helpful. أهلا وسهلا فيك اخي
Great build but would have been better if you made the ends more like a cap that could be screwed or riveted, so that it is able to be taken down to replace the packing when needed as after awhile it burns out. But none the less a very well explained video with a great end product. Cheers friend
I thought about doing that, my 4 Wheeler muffler have end cap to be able to replace the packing material however I was thinking to make it as simple as possible. I am going to post videos in the future about muffler and I am going to build one for my 4 wheeler and I will include a cap at the end. Thank you for the comment and thank you for watching.
Thats why God made cut off wheels, lol. Besides, he used stainless steel wool. It will probablly rust out before the packing needs replaced. It looks so much cleaner being all welded. If used glass packing, maybe.
@@KC9RXP stainless and rust In same sentence eh? Likely burn out before it would "rust" and yes you could keep cutting it and rewelding it I suppose..but like me and the owner previously spoke the removable end cap like many other designs is the way to go, replacing a few rivets looks cleaner and alot Easier to service than chop and reweld would be. Once done I was able to just bolt it on then started it up & it's much quieter but had to tune the carburetor settings for low & high speed mix & it works great lol .

Nice video, which is better glasswool or steelwool to reduce noise sound? cause glasswool could wet
@@SalamSayhood thank's for advice just want to reduce noise sound of portable genset
New subsceiber sir... Thanks for that brilliant idea.
Thank you for watching, subscriptions and for the nice comment.
This is just what I was looking for, but is it too restrictive for a high performance 250cc four stroke motorcycle? Somebody, PLEASE ANSWER.🙏🏾
Thanks for your answer. I really appreciate it. I subscribed.🇯🇲✊🏾
Thank you for the comment,
The last thing you want in a muffler is baskpressure, where do you get this idea from?
Any type of muffler will not reduce noise without creating some back pressure. The design of this muffler is for performance and will not cause a lot of back pressure and may create vacuum between the exhaust cycle of the cylinders to help with the engine preference, however at the exhaust moment it may cause back pressure. I was at a car show a long time ago and there was a company showing their line of mufflers and one of their engineers was explaining the benefits of the back pressure on noise reduction. Personally I believe the only thing that doesn't cause back pressure is a straight pipe. What do you think?
Good Design and fabrication work
Thank you, I appreciate your comment
excellent work!
Thank you,
one question, why don't you turn the muffler around so that the gasses would go into the glass packing through the holes thus making it even quieter?
You are right, install it the other way will make it quieter. However, quieter muffler will reduce performance. The way I installed it, it is for preference and just to reduce the rumble of the exhaust. In the future, I am going to build few types of glass mufflers and will monitor the sound, engine performance and heat. Thank you for watching
@@SalamSayhood you shouldve tested it both ways just for fun and to show the difference, looking forward for next vids!
Very nice job.
Thank you
very well done, great welds and everything, this may work nice as a performance exhaust on my boat, even without the fiber glass I am sure its quieter.
In the old days, guys with sport cars, used to remove the fiber glass to get deeper and loader sound.this design is for performance and not for reducing the sound. If you install it the opposite direction with fiber glass, you will get sound reduction at the cost of performance. Thank you for watching and for the nice comment.
What a big difference!
Thank you sir,

The muffler was installed correctly. This style of muffler is not to reduce all noise, it's to cut out the rasp and not reduce performance.
You are correct. Thank you for watching.

Would you be able to use a circular shapes to reduce the sound without using any packing????

Sounds like it worked well... good job.

If some fresh air is induced in the main exhaust by putting small holes at bottom end it would decrease resistance and fresh air will be siphoned in to make exhaust gasses cleaner.

Can the fiberglass cotton material be substituted with fiberglass mesh covering a thick layer of rock-wool?
Hello, There are three type of material they use for the glass pack, fiberglass, stainless steel wool and ceramic. The packing material must be high heat resistant. Fiberglass is the cheapest and when new it work the best, stainless is the less effective in sound reduction but it will work for longer time than the other packing material. Don't use steel wool or anything is not rated for muffler packing.
They sale the muffler packing material online, for 2 stroke and for 4 stoke engine. I hope this answer your question.
Excellent. Thank you.

This works on a car?
You will have to install it opposite to the direction that I show to give you quieter sound. The sound of the engine will be similar to sport cars.
This is BRILLIANT
Thank you sir
I am wondering if this works in making gun silencer?
Good morning, the short answer is no, it will not be an effective to do the job.
To get the most sound control the louvers need to scoop the exhaust flow
You are correct, the way I installed it was for performance. Thank you for watching and for the feedback.
Bass frequencies carry a lot of energy and travel further. Sound system engineers and musicians know this well. If the bass sound is converted into treble frequencies, this could sound louder up close, but dissipate the sound with distance.
Any thought about this when developing a muffler?
Hello, The glass pack was designed and produced since the late sixties. I know what you are saying, however I didn't understand what is your point?

It is muffler packing. It is available for 4 strokes and 2 strokes engine. You can use one of these:

Ceramic muffler packing.
Stainless steel muffler packing.
While the fiberglass give the best sound reduction for this performance muffler, the stainless steel packing will last longer. Thank you for watching

Wouldn’t that restrict air flow
How about for my lawn-moah?
Hello Kevin, are you asking if glass pack muffler will work with lawn mower? If so, the answer is yes, most of them with 4 stroke engines are sold with glass pack design muffler. If you like to build your own stuff, then this will be a fun project. If you are not setup to build it, then it maybe cheaper to buy a muffler from tractor supply or online store. Make sure you get the right size for your machine. Thank you for watching.

Thank you for the comment. The glass pack always cause debate on which direction it should be installed. I experimented with it in the past and this should explain it:
If you install it in the direction I showed: the glass pack will last longer, you have less back pressure, engine run cooler and louder.
If you install it the other way: the glass pack packing material will degrade faster, you will have more back pressure, the engine will warm up faster and it will be quieter.
If you use a drilled pipe in the center instead of what I made: you will be in the middle of the above two options.
I hope this was helpful.
