    • @Tearakan

      Expand into south and control all zanzibar. Make it your main trade city area. Make sure to control most of gulf of aden too and then expand on all islands in indian ocean and indonesia and india. Then you can force trade to zanzibar from pretty much the entire southern asian area. Your economic power then can outmatch even strong ottomans. After that conversion is super easy.

    • @Tearakan
      @Tearakan 6 лет назад +1

      Remove Talos I moved my capital early to a gold mine and developed it to get renaissance and focus on getting Africa horn and Kilwa in the south. That plus lots of war including attacking Arabian peninsula guys kept me with just one or two loans max usually without most of the play through. You can start colonizing soon after getting second idea and getting the island in Indian Ocean help make Zanzibar amazing.

    There's a very different way you can go about an Ethiopian playthrough. Mamluks LOOK powerful early on on paper, but in reality you have many advantages over them at game start:
    1.) God-like ruler. You can easily get a mil tech advantage early. If they start developing rennaissance early, you can even go two mil techs ahead. I prefer getting the first idea in quality and 1 mil tech over them.
    2.) Mamluks are muslim tech units and you are African. You start with the same tech level, but African units have way more pips.
    3.) You can rival weak neighbors for pp and "show stregnth" for even more monarch points.
    4.) You have amazing Portuguese events that add disc and morale to help you beat them. Personally, I try to attack the Mamluks before the events fire so I can have them if the Ottomans attack, but if you just want to take Alexandria and you're new to the game, you can use them on the Mamluks.
    5.) Mamluks never have good allies because they just try to vassalize arabian minors.
    So the best thing to do, imo, is save mp and attack Mamluks early. Developing institutions in the Ethiopian mountains is a terrible long term strategy. Better to get an early tech advantage and rush them. Supply limits in the early game are low, so the Mamluks will divide their army in two- you should vassalize your coptic neighbors and have them attach to you during the war. With all of Ethiopia's early game buffs you can easily defeat Mamluk stacks much larger than your own. Once you get far enough north QQ will almost always ally you and the only real threat from there will be the Ottomans until you can start to see Europe and find stronger allies.

    As Ethiopia as ideas i would always recommend: 1. Religious, 2. Defensive, 3. Admin and then 4. Diplo (Trade/Explo)
    Religious is for me a must pick as coptic nation, so you dont die to rebellions and you will always be at max prestige, because of the conversion. This works handy with ethiopias national ideas +50% Chance of new heir, because you can always kill your heir when he is useless and you dont need do worry about any prestige hits. Defensive works well with −10% Land attrition form NIs so you can get without any policies -35% attrition, wich is huge in the regions to save manpower and war exhaustion. Also the +15% Moral is really usefull against mamulks in the early and midgame, because they only get discipline. Admin is a nobrainer form me: with the second blessing (easy to get + NIs) you get - 45% core reduction, wich is insane. You can argue with the 4. Idea group, but the the new rework Diplo is insanely strong, maybe you can swap it with Def if you have AE problems early on. Because fight most of the time against sunnis, diplo is key to avoid a massive coaltion. If you conquered something in india (with no CB) and have a established foothold in sansibar, then trade is the way to go, you will literally print money, so you dont need eco ideas to handle the inflation from the gold mines. Exploration was great, but with only 1 Colonist now, it is rather medicore & you dont want to spend your admin points on expansion if you are not a major colonizer. The policies from the build are not insanely good, but two of them are: +20% relgions unity/ +1 missionary strength (Diplo/Relgious) to help against rebels and corruption. +1 Relation/+1 Diplomat (Diplo/Def) helps to avoid a coaltion
    The Into on the episode was insanely good with the free camera, keep up the good work.

    • @Times_Ticking
      @Times_Ticking 6 лет назад

      No need for defensive. African units shine earlier in the game with better pips (mil tech 5 through 12), especially the cavalry. Early game doesn't need attrition reduction because combat width is low. Religious + quantity yields +10% morale if you're wanting higher morale.

    • @Tearakan
      @Tearakan 6 лет назад

      Quantity is better for larger armies. Exploration is great as a second pick after religious for expansion into indonesia and indian ocean islands then hit india and control those nodes. Plus if you control most of aden then you pretty much have full control over all southern asian trade. Make it flow into zanzibar and it can rival end nodes in power.

      @@Tearakan Exploration is great if you don't know about territory you want to conquer. AFAIR Ethiopia had knowledges about Indonesia islands for free, so Expansion is better choice.

      @saibam8971 5 лет назад

      My current Ethiopia run I went with economy, exploration, offensive, humanist. Had no struggle converting. No issues with rebels, just place troops where they will spawn. Manpower was good except the first decade. I smash all my enemies. 1580ish, empire stretches from South Africa to Antioch. Just coring Constantinople atm. I did not have any free knowledge of Indonesia so exploration was a must.

    One question I have about it is,
    wouldn't it be worth it to go for Humanist ideas somewhat at the start?
    Even if you don't finish the group until later, just the first two bonuses, +25% religious unity and -2 National Unrest would be absolutely great for dealing with early rebel problems and the rest is always useful for later.
    Also, do you plan on doing the votes for Guides on Patreon again? Would love to see those back ^~^

    • @RadioRes
      @RadioRes  6 лет назад +14

      Thanks Quas!
      I see humanist and religious as opposing ideas. If I take one, I will never take the other one. So when playing a minor religion as Coptic, you will have so many heretic/heathen provinces that even with extra religious unity/tolerance with humanist, the religious unity will suffer and there will be constant rebel problems. Plus some of the religious policies give extra religious unity and unrest.
      I was just thinking about making a poll yesterday when I made the post! I will do one this week! :)

    • @RandomNub0815
      @RandomNub0815 6 лет назад +4

      @@RadioRes If you pick relgious ideas early you can still take humanist ideas in the age of absolutism, because you dont want to increase the autonomy in this age anymore. The other way around (humanist early) it is nonsence like you said.

    Blessed Prester John was the first big achievement I ever got, only because the Ottomans got memed on by Venice HARD, but not hard enough that they took Constantinople, but not weak enough that they got eaten up by the Turkish minors, leaving them in a perfect docile state, just waiting to be eaten.
    There was a bunch of other weird stuff too, like a thriving Armenia, slow Mamluks, and a Mega Spain who owned the entire new world because of a PU with Portugal. Had I realized just how lucky I was, this being my first big achievement run, I would've taken my chances and expanded into Zimbabwe before the European powers did. I still wake up in the middle of the night cursing myself for not taking advantage of that game sooner.

    I would recommend getting both Economic Ideas and Quantity Ideas as fighting all these wars eats into your funds and manpower, controls inflation from the inevitable loans and goldmines and the edict lowers development cost even further which helps spawning institutions. Also AI look at your army size, not quality, when they decide whether to declare war in which case the increased force limit from Quantity Ideas can help deter power-hungry Mamluks and Ottomans.
    Getting Religious Ideas is also a must with all the converting you'll be doing. Getting Alexandria, Jerusalem and Mecca as soon as possible will give you more missionaries than you'll ever need as well as near infinite prestige. Combined with Ethiopia Ideas this allows you to disinherit every heirs that isn't a 5/5/5 or better for the rest of the game.

    I tried this one before watching the video and I the problem I ran into was that the Ottomons had allied Russia, Persia didn't form (stayed Timurids), and the Commonwealth collapsed until combined Ottomon/Russian teamwork. I managed to conquer more of India, colonized Australia and California, but I wasn't really able to build up enough of an army against the powerhouse that was the Ottomons. They also allied Tunis (which had most of North Africa) so I couldn't expand that way either. I decided to bail and got the "Sleepless in Seattle" achievement instead :D

  • @Tearakan
    @Tearakan 6 лет назад

    I went religious ideas first while conquering areas. Ended up converting quick. Got the aden trade node and full controlled zanzibar. Made zanzibar my main trade area. Then I got colonization. Took all the islands in indian ocean to slow down european colonization. Then made trade companies in india and indonesia. Used merchants to push all trade to aden and zanzibar. In between all of that I vassalized medri bahri and fed them the northern provinces in between me and mamluks. Mamluks never declared on me. While getting power in asia I was able to ally bengal and persia. Kept them as allies as I expanded north. With the powerful trade I waited until otto went to war with mamluks then split them in half by taking egypt areas. Went quantity for 1st mil idea. After that engaged with more wars vs mamluks to take all african holdings then waited until I could get persia and bengal to help with otto. After 1st war with otto they got weaker and weaker as I was a dominant force in indonesia and india and was trying to force all trade to zanzibar. Get trade ideas and late game you become a beast.

    Very good video as usual. I wrote a guide for Ethiopia about 9 months ago on the eu4 subreddit, and it looks like we followed the same general path. I took exploration as my second idea group and expanded into the East Indies for some valuable development. I imagine this is an even more viable option since the trade routes were redirected a bit in that part of the world.

    If you were to play a full game as Ethiopia I wonder what direction you'll take it in. Probably forming some nation in Europe to than get trade companies in all the African and Asian provinces freeing up state slots for those valuable Egyptian, Ottoman and European provinces. Than playing the trade game with trade companies and possibly even colonial nations depending on which nation you formed. Coptic is an amazing religion, arguably the second strongest in the game(after Orthodox) so staying Coptic is ideal, especially with religious ideas giving you a free very powerful CB against literally the entire world.

    i took missionary ideas as the first idea group and most of the time and vassalized coptic nations to feed them only sunni provinces. they can either convert it or hold onto my religious unity as i convert under provinces before annexing them. by 1550 i full annexed mamluks. almost all of saudi arabia, pushing into ottomans expanded along the coast towards south africa and had 2 vassals in central africa with religious unity being more than 70% most of the time. oh yea my first coptic blessing was missionary strength because 2.5% disiplin isnt a very big bonus early game for ethiopia as starting out with a 6/5/5 ruler and exploiting estates for monarch points meant that you'll be ahead of tech for most of the early game until the institutions start racking up, even then you can either focus on your idea or force spawn the institution . i forced it because at this time the yemeni countries were hostile towards me and institution couldn't spread through the sea lane whilst mamluks rivaled me hence institution spreaded slow there as well.

Having them near the enemy makes them a bulwark even though they refuse to fight for us. I just made up that strategy while watching this guide. I have no experience as Ethiopia.

    • @RadioRes

      Might work. But the enemy might also support their independence which will complicate things.

      @@RadioRes I tested it another game, it doesn't work, the bulwark part doesn't work as there will be no fighting.
      However I'm currently in 1459 and am aproximatly 10 years ahead on your conquest, my main changes are:
      - I made haddiyya a march (damot has the goldmien so I want to integrate them sooner than later) letting them win basically every war pretty much on their own. I'm constantly at 0 manpower but that doesn't matter as haddiyya is doing the fighting I just siege.
      - I vassalized marehan when I attacked adal the 2nd time (and marehan was their ally) and taking "Werder" from them to be able to keep conquering to the south
      - I took influence first due to obviously doing this the vassal-way
      - dumping quite alot of diplo on the goldmine (don't know if you did so aswell you don't state it in your guide)
      anyways. great guide, thanks alot. you're a great youtuber.
      Maybe you read this :) if not maybe I help someone else.

    I dont really see the point you take economic ideas first since its mostly for tall play and you try to expand as fast as possible so not really tall play. That doesnt sound right to me. Also, inflation is not bad, as long you use the borrowed money to conquer decent provinces. I would probably take admin first. Also, if playing outside of Europe i would look at unit pips if im not used to play in other areas. African units outshine muslim unit type for quite a while. This knowledge could have made you pick defensive ideas early and defeat Mamluks with clever tactics (Coptic religion got fort defense and you have favorable terrain) and the better unit type.
    I know there is a lot of ways to play this game and your way of doing it is fine and works. But I think its fair to suggest to players, that there is other ways of doing it as well. Like taking admin, dont care about loans, as long you expand fast enough and conquer good provinces (gold , securing trade etc.). Taking advantage of your government rank and raising autonomy and giving away land to estates while autonomy is high. There is so many other ways of doing this achievement.

    Without allies i managed to beat the mamluks by 1480. later I fought more than 4-5 wars with the ottomans, whom I lost the last one, since i was tired of war and all my allies betrayed me, then i rage quitted and decided to never play ethiopia again, since then ottomans are too OP

      If ottomans take out mamluks early, that's even better for you! You can eat up rest of the mamluks. Then grow bigger, secure alliances and take care of ottomans later.
