    I’ve made it 44 years and haven’t worn a tux at anytime I could afford a dress watch. I think any watch but a gshock can dress up if need be. At the recent wedding I attended, there was my Datejust 41 blue, a black dial Seamaster 300smp, and a sea of Apple watches and empty wrists. Us watch nerds overplay the appropriateness of a certain watch in certain settings. The default is that no one cares what watch you are wearing and the rare brush with a fellow watch nerd is just an occasional treat.

    • @doctoralgy8186
      @doctoralgy8186 2 года назад +3

      Good point brought up. I definitely believe anyone should wear whatever watch they like to wear on any occasion. It's their wrist, not ours. Of course for me I won't wear a G-Shock with a suit and tie imo haha. Wearing different watch types for the occasion does have some basic principles to help guide us if personally necessary in my opinion but at the end of the day, wear what you want.

    • @BrittPearceWatches
      @BrittPearceWatches  2 года назад +11

      I feel this! And I mean! I agree to a point. 😜 I definitely think… most people don’t really care about what’s on your wrist! 😜
      with my husbands job I find myself at a black tie or two every year. Never been to a white tie! 😱 but one of the things I kinda like about living in the U.K. is some of the dress expectations that certainly did not exist in Canada! 😂🙈 when I first moved here I lived in this small village, and all the old farmers would come into the town in their grey and brown tweed suits! And it just felt like this bygone era that I loved! Rather than my friends who were wandering around town in track pants …. Ok. I wander around in track pants too! 😜😜
      But there’s sometjing I find so romantic about having dress expectations! Particularly to nice functions! Would I be upset if someone wore a Seamaster to a wedding…? No. 😜 of course I’d go talk to them! And we’d talk sports watches until the cows come home! Would I think it’s more elegant, tasteful and suiting to wear a dress watch? YUPPPP! Hahaha. But I’ve become a horrible snob and I hate myself. I think I need to go back to Canada, jump in the lake and go mudding with old friends! 😜 I’m becoming an awful snob! …. But DJ 41 IS A VERY TASTEFUL CHOICE INDEED! 😍😍😍 the DJ is so dang versatile! Top tier watch!!

      I think you’re right when you say no one usually cares! We obsess over what watch to wear to an occasion, not for other people, but for ourselves. Sadly, I cannot afford any of these pieces, but there are some useful substitutes for those on more of a bank manager friendly budget. For the Patek Ellipse I can recommend taking a look at the Universal Geneve White/Silver/Golden Shadow from the 1970s. Very similar styling (it was a very popular case shape and I have have a CYMA in this style) and also employs an in-house, micro-rotor movement (cal 1-66) which means it is thinner than a supermodel's lunch box. In fact, I believe it enjoyed the distinction of being the world's slimmest automatic watch for approximately 10 years, til the mid -80s. All yours for around £500-£1000, depending on condition.

    Nice one Gringa, some interesting choices there.I would agree with most of your choices but I think that there maybe a couple of options from the brands you mention. Omega, I'd choose the Constellation Globemaster in blue on the leather strap, highly underrated and it has the 8900 engine. Grand Seiko, Heritage Spring Drive 3 Day in blue as it's one of the models where the power indicator blends better into the dial. Breitling, Superocean Heritage black dial, a toned down diver. Tudor, BB36 black dial on bracelet, elegant, reserved but a sporty edge. I'm sure I could think of more... but I'd never stop.

    The Pasha story is kind of complicated, from my understanding.
    In 1933 the Pasha of Marakesh actually DID order a custom one of a kind watch from Cartier, designed to specifications which required some robustness. BUT, that watch was a modified Santos like piece, a SQUARE watch.
    In 1943, someone ordered a round watch from Cartier, which was to be waterproof, and have the metal thread in grate over the crystal. The proof this watch exists, is the paper work, and the paper work alone, for the making of the watch, but the documents are internal Cartier documents, between departments, which means we do not even know the name of the person who made the special order. No evidence of that exists, nor any evidence of what name or even reference number was given the finished watch.
    In 1985, Cartier, looking for a new direction, and seeing what sports watches had become, hired the legend himself, Gerald Genta, to design a more.... Cartier... sports watch, with their particular aesthetic focusing on style, form, and geometry, but NOT a square watch... and Mr Portal did the obvious. Yet, for some reason, the folks at Cartier in charge of naming and marketing the watch, basically got the 1933 and the 1943 commissions confused, and basically ascribed an origin to the watch we know as the Pasha, to which it was not entitled, simply because they, for some reason, thought it inspired by the watch made for the Pasha in 1933, rather than one made a decade later.
    In many ways, a more interesting origin story than the commonly accepted one they sell to us. Though it was not through deliberate disingenuousness that such a story came in to being, but just a case of a mix up with the paperwork, an all too common a story throughout history across all kinds of fields.
    But indeed, the Pasha, and Cartier as whole, are grossly underrated. Louis-Francois Cartier, the founder, was, in fact, not a Jeweler, but a master WATCHMAKER by trade, and Watches have been part of the brand since it's founding. In terms of horological pedigree, they have more than Omega or A Lange & Sohne, more than Seiko or Rolex, more than most American makers.... but they are still so unfairly considered a 'Jewelry Maison' that just happens to make watches. Despite being far more important to modern horological history than just about any other maker besides Seiko, Rolex or Casio.
    In fact, my general advice to anyone researching a watch or getting in to horology, is that if anyone ever tells you that Cartier is really a Jeweler, and not a watchmaker, just like Piaget or Bulgari (who in reality, also make fine watches), or worse, just some kind of fashion watch.... then you should make note, and never trust anything that person ever tells you about anything, ever again. Even if you see a knife handle protruding from your chest, if that person tells you that you have been stabbed..... get a second opinion.

    Timex is very underrated for the budget crowd. Instead of buying fashion watches that are like one night stands, you can buy a Timex at the same price with a Heritage that can rival the Swiss watch makers. On a side note, I love the way Brit walked in like such a boss. She's the real deal, funny, humble, smart and super hot all in one. Hi Brittany
    Couldn’t agree more… except for Cartier. My dislike for Cartier almost surpasses my passion for Rolex (btw I love the Cellini) and Omega (just picked up the CK 859). The only Cartier that I think is marginally interesting is the Tank. Absolutely love JLC and I’ve had the MC date with the sector dial. Sold it, kind of regret it and I guess that was one of the reasons I ended up getting the CK 859 - absolutely loving it.

  • @harrystout7445
    @harrystout7445 2 года назад +1

    Largely agree with this list with exception to the Cellini, a watch being less-popular doesn’t automatically make it underrated and the Cellini falls awkwardly on the line between dress/everyday with a formal design at a too-large case size, (taking umbrage with a seconds hand on dress watches and then claiming 39mm is the perfect mens dress watch size seems a bit silly.) Beyond this, much of Rolex’s higher price tag with regards to alternatives that have better specs is excused because of their history, whereas competitors in the dress watch space have more compelling stories.

    Yesss! Finally some love for the Cellini. It's a dress watch that can actually be worn. 50m water resistance and a movement that won't be damaged from regular use. Being precious metal only is the big hurdle for it, imo. If they made it in steel, it could take a decent chunk out of the Reverso's market. I'd certainly be one of the converts.

    Problem with the Railmaster is that it is a “cheap” alternative to the Explorer. Problem with Grand Seiko is often it’s thickness, and lack of resale value. Problem with the Santos (especially the bicolor Dumont) is that most people are blind. How can you overlook such a beauty. And yes, I’ve bought one for my wife, after selling a Grand Seiko 😂

    Appreciate your videos Gringa 👍.
    Yeah a diver can work with a suit and tie if it fits under the cuff imo. For example, the Omega Seamaster 300m SMP diver specializes more in sporty but as a strap monster it can dress up in leather/steel bracelet, preferably with a black dial. Same goes for the Orient Kamasu. Yes you can wear leather with a diver. Should you take a leather strap to the beach? Not really, but water resistant leather does exist.
    Divers+rubber/nato for recreation and Divers+leather for formal imo, why not.
    At the end of the day, wear what you want. Not what anyone else tells you.
