  • Ever try to order your double neck, heavy metal, dream guitar? Well, that's what I did, only I waited months for it and it barely works. This is perhaps one of the worst playing guitars I've ever owned. Thanks Aliexpress!
    Should I try and save this guitar (which will require replacing just about every part on it) or should I junk it? You decide!

    • @TheWordprophet

      I agree...just like almost any Chinese made guitar, this one is going to need a new Floyd Rose Special bridge, and locking nut, a fret level and polish, neck adjustment, new pickups, and obviously a new selector switch.
      Whenever I buy a guitar from China, I already know it's going to be a project. I personally enjoy working on them and upgrading.
      But I bought one just like this, from the same seller (but mine is white w/black hardware) for about $320...so an extra $100 for quality new parts, and a few hours of time on the bench, makes it a very nice guitar for a very reasonable price.
      I look forward to receiving mine...it's in the mail presently.
      :)

  • @GonzGunner

    Hi Max, as long as the necks are able to be adjusted and stay solid under string tension, the frets can be reconditioned. Level and re-crown the frets, file the fret ends until all the burrs and sharp points are gone, then use 220, then 320, and finish with 400 grit sandpaper to make the fingerboard edges nice and smooth. Replace the locking nut on the 6 string neck. Make sure the nut slots are cut properly on the 12 string neck so the strings can move through easily and not bind, and make sure the tuners work good on both necks. As to the electronics, the pickups seem to work good and are putting out a decent sound. Get rid of the cruddy toggle switch for the necks and replace it, then wire the guitar appropriately to a single output jack. As you mentioned, Max, having two jacks negates the purpose of having a double neck guitar, so you can switch necks on the fly, you're not aiming to have a stereo guitar. Get rid of the output jack that is left, and plug the hole with a dowel orJB Weld wood putty, and get a black Sharpie to color match it to the finish, no one will see the difference. That's what I would do to bring the guitar into proper playing condition without having to put out more money than you spent on it.

      It would also be great to see other guitar youtubers get involved. Pass the guitar around and have each youtuber do a small part of it. Because there are two necks, it would be good for metal heads and others.

  • @frankiechan9651

    I vote to try and fix it.
    There's a whole video series there - parts replacement, how to spot and fix issues etc. (GuitarFetish sponsorship?)
    All of which can be applied to picking up a second hand guitar, a budget new cheapie etc.
    I've got a twin neck (acoustic/electric) waiting for me to put some time into it as fixer project and it's more for the learning experience.
    Can I make this thing playable with the tools, skills and knowledge I've accumulated over the past few years - some of which I've learned from you.
    It's kind of in line with your channel creed - value - get a cheaper guitar, and with a few $ and a bit of elbow grease, you get a more-than-decent result.

  • @ValEomen
    @ValEomen 3 года назад +1

    No guitar should be left behind, all should be played. Definitely fix it.
    Since fixing guitars is one of my hobbies, or fetishes probably 🤣, I would suggest you put the floyd from the js32 Jackson you upgraded recently, a new locking nut and if memory serves well, I remember some locking tuners you got from ebay or amazon that did a nice job and were dirt cheap, they might also be a nice option. These might do the job and keep things budget friendly. A black tusq nut in the upper neck would also be cool. As for wiring and pickups, I would suggest going with guitar fetish or something equivalent as they do the job just fine and big name stuff cost a lot more. It would also be awesome if you could connect the electronics to one output jack and have a switch that chooses which neck is active. Finally, suggesting you take care of that fret sprout and leveling and crowning the frets would make me the master of the obvious. It is a nasty job, especially on maple fretboards, but every guitar needs a hero. That's what I can think of so far.
    If you decide to go through with making this a playable guitar, it would be an awesome video. If not, at least it would make a great studio decoration as it looks killer.
    All the best from Crete! Keep rocking!

    • @chrismeadows4216
      @chrismeadows4216 3 года назад

      I don't think he should cheap on the upgrades for this one, either. It needs extra love that he can get away with not giving guitars that are already great. I'm talking an OFR, some Blackfire pickups, all-metal pickup selector hardware, a huge overhaul on electronics, and some great locking tuners. His wallet will hurt a little, but by $600, it will be a great guitar... 😩

  • @TheDeadmandillon
    @TheDeadmandillon 3 года назад +2

    I can see Hipshot or Grover tuners to replace the trashy ones that are on it. Then replace that tremolo and locking nut with something that's better quality and will hold its tune for longer. I can also see either a full set of Dimarzio and/or Seymour Duncan humbuckers while you're gutting out all of the electronics, unless otherwise, do a full set of EMGs... definitely the 57/66 for the 12 string half, and the Hetfield set down on the 6 string half. Aside from all of my suggestions, and a little bit of time correcting your fret edges and resetting your action on both necks, surprise us with what string sets you want to put on this redeemable piece.

    I have salvaged every guitar that has passed through my hands. I like the look this one has, so it would be on my overhaul list. I like it because it's different. I'm sure Gotoh or maybe Wilkinson would have tuners that will fit. I can't 100% guarantee that. The electronics didn't sound terrible, but they were below middle of the road. I would like to hear the 12 string side to be fully sure. As for the rest of the hardware, Musiclily has a Rose style tremolo that would be a plus fir this axe. They also have a locking nut that would help.

    Max, you have your work cut out for you if you want to correct the problems on that beast. New tuners, new bridge, fret job, new electronics, filling the hole for one of the outputs (I'd get rid of the top one and unify the lower one, just to keep the cable under control). The list, I hate to say is too long for me to type. But, in the end if you think it's savable, then it is. It's really all about whether you want to do so. As long as the body and neck are sound, not twisted, etc. You should be able to get it up to your standards in playability. I don't expect it to be an inexpensive endeavor, though. Good luck, and have fun with it. :)

    Get 2 new hockey stick styke necks from Guitar Fetish. If you can't find a replacement 12 string neck then possibly change it to a 7 string neck. Use GF parts for the electronics. Use the Red actives pickups for the 6 string, and blade pickups for the 12 string.

    First, totally dig the t-shirt! The F-104 was such a cool fighter! As far as the guitar, I'm thinking about law of diminishing returns. Do you really want to sink time and money into an already bad situation (my MBA professor would school you on sunk costs - don't let them influence financial decisions). I agree the guitar looks cool, but with the money you'd spend to make it right, you could probably buy a cooler one that actually works. Dig Animal Magnetism but think Lovedrive is a better album (with a way cooler cover that's no longer appropriate!).

    If I had so many good guitars, I honestly would be too lazy and without motivation to overwork that double neck.
    Maybe possible to get it in an acceptable playing condition with less work: keep the bridge's, tuners and the pups, but new locking nut….
    Cool thing to have on the wall!

  • @picksalot1
    @picksalot1 3 года назад +4

    Assuming that you really want a double-neck guitar, I think it could be an interesting project. Smoothing the ends of frets is easy, but you have a lot of them. Shimming the necks is not very hard either, but can be time consuming. The locking nut should probably be tossed, and replaced with a bone or brass nut. Test the tuners with the new nut, but you might want to replace them with locking tuners straight away to save time. I didn't get a good look at the tremolo unit. Wilkinson makes one with locking saddles - I've seen Pete Thorn using it, and he likes it. And then there's the electronics and the pickups. You might want to hold off until Halloween for that "trick or treat." If you can fix it for less than $100, I'd say go for it. Ultimately, guitars are pretty simple devices and can usually be rescued. Good luck. 🤷‍♂️

      Replacing the nut with a non-locking one on a Floyd Rose-style bridge might be a chore. I mean… a locking nut is kinda what makes a full floating Floyd Rose-style bridge stay in tune. Could run a brass nut and locking tuners but I’m not sure the tuning stability would be any better than it is now.

    What should you do with that messed up doubleneck? My opinion is that you should fix the axe up. My current go-to guitar is that Ibanez RG I never stop talking about. You remember ... the one with the cracked neck. I didn't even know for sure that I could repair that crack but I rolled the dice, bought the axe cheap and did my first (and only) neck repair! My guitars all wind up ugly and janky after I work on them for a while, but I'm learning and my axes are slowly but surely getting dialed in. My eventual goal is to replicate the feel of a PRS that a friend of mine let me check out. So easy to play that I couldn't actually PLAY it!

    Definitely do a full mod project! Rewire it to be like a traditional double neck, upgrade all the hardware and electronics...

    I had this one on order from DHgate about the same time you bought it, but kept getting weird emails about it still being made and progress photos. I started getting cold feet and made up a story about being strapped for cash, I’ll take the refund, I’m sure you can find another buyer. They replied that it’s almost done, they’ll parcel it up in the next day or two. In the end, they missed the three month deadline and DHgate automatically refunded me. I’ve been toying with the idea of ordering it again, but after watching your video and reading a couple of online reviews, I’ll give it a miss. It’s a shame, it is a really cool looking guitar.

    id definitely put my hands to work over that guitar but id consider also making a new body made of the most attractive mahogany and put the craziest logo on the headstocks, looks nice

    So Scorpions' album cover predates Spinal Tap's mockumentary. Groovy.
    I would do a repair series, with perhaps interviews on ideas with Collin from CSGuitars, Kris from Thomann, and natch, Phil McKnight. I think talking about this guitar-shaped-object would be almost as entertaining as getting it to work. Bonus points: add a piezo pickup to the 12 string side, so at least that jack would have "some use". :P

    Really looks wicked. Having this guitar to be repaired and have it fully functional, documenting how you were able to eliminate all the constraints mentioned would be a great video..like the documentary of your buried guitar that you did in the middle of the desert. 😀

    Hard tail the floyd, not worth fixing. Rewire the entire guitar with new pickups, change the volume knob in center with proper switch to switch between guitars... File, recrown, and polish frets... would be a cool wall hanger that can have some practicality... Its worth saving... just needs some serious love...

    The first step is always moving the truss rod and if it’s ok I would use the guitar as a project to learn everything from fretwork to electronics but if the neck can’t be adjusted I would use the guitar as firewood.

    In case one has enough time, or even too much time, and also some money for replacement parts, fxing this double neck guitar could be nice (and demanding) project. but if you do count time and costs for replacement parts needed, junking that double neck might be be the wisest option.

    Judging by the tuning stability, the necks are still green wood. Hang them out in a Phoenix back patio for a month or see if you can have them roasted. Short-cut: replace them with carbon fiber Moses necks. Each will cost more than the guitar, but everything about them will be sorted at a stroke.
    2: Use the body as a template. The neck pockets will be a mess anyway. The wiring issues will be enough to drive you to distraction. Might as well take the shape, and wander off to better things. Maybe contact one of the GGBO2021 entrants in your area for a better piece altogether.
    3: Trash ALL the hardware. If the bolts aren't thought out, everything else is suspect. I have definite opinions what everything should be, but sensibly affordable, quality hardware can be found easily.
    4: As an instrument, this one would be torture to fix. Building one properly from scratch would be about as much effort, and we live in an age where people build guitars for about the same sense of artistic satisfaction as playing them. Might as well contact a few and lend them some exposure.

    If the neck pockets are done right and the bridge is aligned you got a nice body and neck then along with the paint and them doing the hard work like routing/paint I say you got your money's worth.
    Would be cool to see it done up properly.
    I been working on 2 squire stratocasters to upgrade this year. Really like the diy side of RUclips how youtubers fix and repair things they enjoy.
    I say fix it or sell it for a guitar or piece of gear you would enjoy just as much

    I ordered strings for my electric six string and I received two packs of 12 strings and I don't have a 12 string guitars at all. Sweetwater had a trainer and they took care of it. I still have them.
