On this shoot I got to test out the new Aputure Spotlight MAX and use my new rolling book light setup. The Spotlight MAX was a great addition to the interviews, allowing for a pop of RGB in the background. The was carried into both interviews. The single stand rolling book light was so easy to setup and from from one location to the next.

Hey Piotr, nice video. I own the Aputure regular Spotlight and it's a very good tool for a few years for me so I am sure the XL is just that much nicer for the bigger lights. Watching this, I also saw that I have the Impact version of your MSE dual light bar and I've been using a smaller version of your 8x8 book with 4x6 Flexfills. I am lacking your cool rolling stand though, I need to get one of those.
I watched your last crate video and for those who own a grip van like you do, definitely the hot tip. For those of us working out of compact car trunks and back seats though, I think the crates wouldn't be a big plus over the stock soft cases, although the crates def stack on a cart better for transport. I usually bring a stinger crate and sometimes a grip crate but for the lights, the softcases are much easier on the inside of my car.
Did a corporate shoot yesterday with doctor interviews and used your exact same Aputure T2C with the grid as the rim-hair and it worked well. That's a pretty cool light and so much easier and safer than putting a big light up in the air with a 27" softbox like we were doing. My friend bough the T2C and I just bought two of the 4' versions for a podcast studio I am setting up. Tube lights are really useful and a lot of fun to work with as you can get so creative with placement.

Very good idea for the simple book light on the move. Really like your carts. For that new Spotlight … how does the brake yolk work? Better than the older leko mount? 1 of my major gripes with the older model for the 300Dii was that the brake yolk was never perfect when set, always having to compensate for its fall or rise to settle. And how heavy is it? Looks beefy. So I imagine combo stands are almost just barely enough and may need to dive into thick 2K stands or Mombos to utilize. I hope they didn’t give it a baby receiver piece, I can just imagine people who would see that and put it on a standard CStand … would be a yikes moment if they did.
Love your book light approach. For a warehouse setting where you have room to roll between setups it’s ideal, though even in a more confined setting, the single stand with a t-bar is a useful option.

Actually loved everything except that spotlight max blue in the back.
This is the second idea for a rolling book light that I’ve seen in the last couple of weeks, and this one has an even smaller footprint, nice! If you somehow attached a floppy to the rolling 600X stand, you’d be able to courtesy all of the light out of the book light opening. I’d imagine all of that extra light spilling at the crew would be a little distracting.
That is a good idea for sure! On this shoot, the spill was not a big deal with the overheads on. But an ultra bounce could help bring up the output and cut the spill.
I enjoyed using the Spotlight Max too!
If you're 600C isn't enough, just wait til the CS15, she's a beast!

I love book lights but I have to say, also having the Aputure 150 softbox, booklights often require flags, which adds another stand or two, so for those of us trying to reduce the amount a of gear we bring to set in smaller cars and SUVs, booklights can be a mixed blessing. Great quality of light but it's just a wall of soft light and I have to have flags, always one for interviews and sometimes two so that adds two more light or C-stands and more sandbags. Just something to be aware of.
The Aputure 150 softbox, if you have a 600 that can actually hold it up in position, is almost as large of a source and with it's included grid, easily more controllable. My car is too small to lug 4x4 floppies or wag flags too so I have to always take into account my light shaping tools as well as sources.

@@danbrockettDOPYeah you are correct. It always tends to add up. I guess it all depends on the size of the project, the pay and size of the space. Personally I’m happy to bring a bit more gear and work a bit harder to get a result I’m happy with. If got bowens adapters on 5’ Profoto RFI and the 4x6 RFI, but I find book lights and the Manfrotto rapid Skylites easier to setup and bring along.

Nice lighting, Piotr! Is a rolling stand less stable than a similar NON-rolling stand? I am trying to keep my grip gear as minimal as possible, and would prefer to buy ONE stand instead of two, whenever possible. I wouldn't want to compromise stability / payload too much though by going for a stand with wheels, since I would probably only NEED the wheels like 20% of the time. (My other stands are only one Kupo C-Stand with a turtle base, and a handful of Photoflex "medium" spreader lightstands, which I think are just aluminum and only have a payload of 12 pounds).
Also, one suggestion for a video topic: How to get the most flexibility out of a single C-Stand. I guess that would be, what accessories would give you the most flexibility (at a lower budget, preferably) from only one C-Stand? I know that might be a niche topic, but maybe you could just give advice for grip when on a real small shoot / one-man operation, or when there is no budget. Thanks in advance for entertaining this idea.
Rolling stands are very limiting. You need to be on level surfaces and smooth surfaces. Another option is adding removable casters. The center of gravity is a lot lower on the stands with casters fixed on them. It is always recommended to lower your payload before rolling the stand. I would say the non-rolling will always be more stable.

Use 600D for key, bounce/reflector for fill, and Quasar Science tube for rim.
I always like a bounce for fill, so natural compared to a light.
hello from Australia. Love your simple book light set-up!. Can you tell me about your Aaputure f22c St up? the mount rods don't appear to be the original ? They look much more solid . I have a f222x and the bendy mount is the only flaw in this incredible light.

Book light set up looks great! I've got a aputure 150 dome, think the book light would be a noticeable upgrade to softness and wrap? Do you feel like the 36 degree will cover all your needs, or planning to grab the 19 or 50 as well? New subscriber, thanks for the cool vids!
The 150 is great, but the 8x8 does offer a softer look overall and better spread. I really want to try the 50 degree for tight spaces.
Wow I love those carts! Do you just roll them onto a van or truck?
I plan to make a video about them in the future. I do remove the shot bags to be safer, but for the most part they just roll on / off.

how dafuq do you take time for cutting all those bts videos?! Do you outsource the cutting/post? all those awesome bts channels who look so busy but still manage to post these nice videos like every three days or so.. I'm also quite busy as a videographer and would like to make some bts videos but I just don't have enough time for editing left.. how do you manage that? Thanks in advance! cheers
I ask that myself! I currently shoot, cut and VO all my vlogs on my own. Sometimes my wife will film me if the camera is moving. But it really comes down to the support of the community. Without that, I would not be pumping stuff out.
