I absolutely love the past mixes- using the soundchip for them was a brilliant move and is honestly one of the coolest little musical details I’ve seen in a game. And this track is great too- It’s real mysterious and jurassic, which is exactly what you’d want for what is gonna be most player’s first trip to the past. All in all just real solid.
Idk if you already know this, but they only used the sound chip because they were running out of space on the CD - if they had made past Redbook versions, there would be no room to put the game! They ended up having to use the soundchip for them, hence why the past themes were unaltered for the US version; it would have been to much of a hassle to change them, since they were already programmed into the game. But this is a perfect example of how limitations breed creativity, since the past themes sound great and like they were from simpler times that are long gone.
@Flux Chip as in sound chip. Older consoles had dedicated chips for handling producing the sound - nowadays, most songs are just stored as MP3s or the like. But back then, they didn’t have the storage for that, so, in Sonic CD’s case, they had to program songs to be played with the dedicated sound chip, since there was no room left to put Redbook-quality songs for the past themes. The past themes are played with samples of instruments that get put together to make the song, whereas the other songs are just like a recording being played.
@@disreconnect Are you talking about the amount of aongs? A lot more than 15 in the standalone JP soundtrack, and when you add the underrated US soundtrack in there, you've got so much more. EDIT: OOH wait lmao, you were referring to me saying "just one song." I meant that as in like most people were only introduced to this song and none of the other Sonic CD songs due to Machine Girl and TikTok popularizing this song precisely.
One thing that I love about the Past mixes that no one talks about is how ambiguous they sound - kind of like giving you an open prognosis of the future. They're both peaceful yet unnerving, melancholic yet cautially optimistic. Coming back to this after getting the bad future makes you wonder about what could've been.
It doesn't sound like something that would make me dance, it sounds like something that would put me to sleep A song that would make me dance would be any of Stardust Speedway's songs
I mentioned this on another Past theme upload, but here's a fun fact: It seems that the original plan was to do the Past themes as CD quality Redbook tracks just like the rest of the OST. One of the Redbook tracks on the earliest Sonic CD prototype available is the Past theme of Palmtree Panic, but as a CD quality song just like what I just said. I don't know why they chose to downgrade the Past themes in the end however, could be due to space constraints on the disc or perhaps they did it for the reason you said.
@@LonelySpaceDetective actually, im pretty sure they HAD to do the past themes like this because they were running out of CD ROM space to do redbook quality songs for every level because the files were so large, so they decided to make use of the chip so be able to fit the songs.

Very peaceful theme, kind of carrying a similar vibe to the tropical one found in the Good Future track in the US OST, but it's executed much better here, and fits a whole lot more due to the prehistoric aesthetics.

Hey man, i been a sonic fan for nearly 18 years but dont gatekeep, im happy more people are discovering sonic because of Machine Girl (besides they make good music)
will never ever understand how people say sonic 2 is better than sonic cd. sonic 2 is good in it's own right but sonic cd is the logical conclusion of the original sonic aesthetic cultivated from development in 1990, plus it's soundtrack is just THAT good.
I'm part of the minority that prefers Sonic CD over Sonic 2. Feels more rewarding to go fast in it, level design is actually enjoyable for me (even Wacky Workbench), time travelling is interesting (albeit unforgiving), the special stages are fun, both JP and US soundtracks are excellent. Sonic CD has an aesthetic that I can't seem to comprehend, but I love it. People say that the time stones do nothing, but they always forget that it guarantees a good future without the need of destroying any more teleporters. I love Sonic 2 but the special stages are WAY too unforgiving, and I'm not a fan of some of its zones (particularly Aquatic Ruin and Metropolis, a bit of Chemical Plant due to its annoying water parts but I can get used to them). Worth noting that I'm judging by the CWH remakes.
@@glitchyisback sonic 2 feels a bit too simple, it's enjoyable but coming back to it as a 17 year old it feels a bit empty and straightforward. sonic cd's level design is so intricate and it really works in it's favour, it gives you multiple paths and makes it feel so good when you do build up that speed (instead of pointless "go fast")
it kinda sucks that i only discovered this due to the machine girl song, but this is still good regardless. might use it as an outro song or something.

they turned this song into a scary song, but this song represents a amazing florest with peace for the animals.
1:56 that rising synth melody in the background is too good to be in video game music
you say that like "video game music" isnt good enough to be real music..
nigga, it's still music, enjoy that shit for what it is;
music.
the first relaxing song nobody forgets
Well, it’s safe to say that I thank God I played this game and not here it from this “Machine Girl”.
Hey man, i been a sonic fan for nearly 18 years but dont gatekeep, im happy more people are discovering sonic because of Machine Girl (besides they make good music)
@@jamrah8713 I mean I’m glad it’s one of the more obscure sonic games and not something crazy popular, would be a bigger pain for sure
@@beyondhaircraze4418agreed.
will never ever understand how people say sonic 2 is better than sonic cd. sonic 2 is good in it's own right but sonic cd is the logical conclusion of the original sonic aesthetic cultivated from development in 1990, plus it's soundtrack is just THAT good.
true both are good but sonic cd is better
@@glitchyisback i agree with this
@@glitchyisback sonic 2 feels a bit too simple, it's enjoyable but coming back to it as a 17 year old it feels a bit empty and straightforward. sonic cd's level design is so intricate and it really works in it's favour, it gives you multiple paths and makes it feel so good when you do build up that speed (instead of pointless "go fast")
Sonic 2 imo just has way better level design and game play, but I don't think it matches the vibe and music of cd personally

Obrigado por postar de novo essas músicas 😃
Finalmente um BR
it kinda sucks that i only discovered this due to the machine girl song, but this is still good regardless. might use it as an outro song or something.
same
Regardless of what some gatekeepers will tell you, you're allowed to discover music on your own terms. There's no right or wrong way to discover music.
Sonic CD should’ve been ported on PS1 & SEGA Saturn as a special edition in mid 90s like Earthworm Jim.
@@Random_Person. damn chill
if i smoke weed this is what im playing while i do it
You too bro? 🔥
I often make sonic move in his walk cycle when I enter the past just to sync with the music because I think it's just so fitting
Bro all the past remixes just give you like that nostalgic feelings, ya know? Just relaxing. Actually, as a matter of fact, I listened to this while Hurricane Milton was wreaking havoc outside with multiple of my neighbors retreaded and deserted their houses but my Mom, has HURRICANE RESISTANT WINDOWS. So yeah that’s my story hope you liked it
Ya best pal
Edit: Wind gusts are higher than ever. What you mean bro?
Original: just chillin in my house.
Edit: meh, I’m just Dieing rn
Fr bro I love this game and all the songs ARE GOATED
ive never played any sonic games as a kid yet this is somehow nostalgic,
Gnarpy pfp?

To everyone coming from Tiktok: Please commit Canada MAID
this song makes me happy
this is so good, i could listen to this all day and not get bored
Sonic CD has always been my favorite sonic game I’ll admit it’s not the best but I love it I’m glad more people are finding out about it cause the 80 type music is 🔥🔥🔥
Perfect mix
prehistoric palmtrees
The music is cool and like I was on the beach
This song reminds me of July 2020
for me it's more may 2021
I loke how you filled in the gaps quite nicely. Great work!
1993: Yo this music is very great!
2023: *THINK IM LOSING MY MIND IN HYSTERIA*
This feels like my brain after school… all ruined and dead.. (very relatable. Also very calming)
only 50000000BC kids will remember
I might be a Kid Kirby, but at least I know that this didn’t come from Machine Girl.
And I’ve played Sonic CD before, hardest sonic game of my life.😰😰😰
