I was so excited to share this location with you that I passed along some information that is not correct. I apologize! This is NOT the only location in Oregon that you can legally collect 0bsian. Please check rules in the area you are in. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU KNOW WHERE YOU CAN LEGALLY COLLECT obsidian as some rules apply in certain areas. We were so excited to find Glass Buttes as we could collect 25lbs a day/250lbs a year without a permit. Happy Hunting
The "cool pattern" that Carrie said looks like waves in conchoidal fracture. Obsidian is pure silica (SiO2) and the bonding between Si and O is quite strong. Because the bonds are strong in all directions, there's no preferred direction or "cleavage" along which the mineral (or in this case, rock) is easy to break. That condition is what gives rise to the beautiful conchoidal fracture you see in obsidian. It's also seen in the mineral quartz, along broken surfaces, as quartz is also pure silica. Great video!
A couple of corrections. Silicate and oxygen are what are known as as elements. SiO2 is a mineral (normally) and is silicate bonded to oxygen not pure silicate. Secondary obsidian is actually what is known as a mineraloid because of its amorphous atomic structure. Which is what gives it, its signature black color. The difference between ordinary obsidian, quartz, and chalcedony is atomic structure.
beautiful country... and wow are those rocks pretty... I lived in Burns for a couple years when i was little in the mid 60s.... it was all open range then and we use help with the cattle and horse round ups... stay safe and healthy... from Deb in South Dakota
Great video. We have driven that highway and never knew until now what we were missing out on off the highway. Drive safely and be careful. See you on RUclips!
Very interesting video. As far as leaving, sometimes there is no key reason, just a gut feeling. We ALWAYS listen to that and respect each other enough to listen to each others. So good for you for leaving! Sweet finds. We have found that, but not known what it was! As for being in a Juniper and Sage area, oh my! The smells are amazing. We love it. Hope you didn't get a puncture! Safe travels
Beautiful red/black volcanic glass. I’m sure you know about Glass Mountain area near Mammoth Lakes, CA; lots of black obsidian and no regulation on collecting that I’m aware of.
Still catching up on your videos (I was a month or so behind). Yes, listen to that inner feeling. When its time to go, its time to leave. We have had that happen to us a couple of times and we are SO glad we listened to it. We later found out there were reasons why we were to leave at that place at that particular time. Sometimes its for safety, other times its because you'll miss something important at some other place.
Mahogany is our favorite. Nice pick Dave. I bet that was pretty handy for digging there Glad you mentioned the sharpness of the stone Carrie. That stuff will chew up your tires. We're pretty sure that's what got our tire when we were obsidian hunting in Utah. Very cool trip guys!
Dave I was saying, “Oh nice one! That would be a nice piece to wrap in copper! Wow! Such great pieces for jewelry! Kelsey, Shane and I would be in seventh heaven!” You’re right about the shards, but remember because of you I now have all the right gear to change a flat 🤣
It won't be too long before we get a video of this place from The Adventure Closet folks, they love rock hounding, I'm surprised they haven't already found this place too. Thanks for journey.
Cool video. I don’t know anything about rocks 😂. What I have seen first hand is Trinitite. We were told don’t take any or you’ll go to jail 🤔 so I just looked at it and touched it some. It’s still hot ☢️ too. Looks like a great place to boondock though. Maybe rocks could be a hobby I get when I retire 🤷🏼♂️.
Definitely some awesome fines, when you get back here to Ohio maybe next summer, have to make sure you check out Flint Ridge you can do some dig in there
I know that feeling… there doesn’t have to be a reason. If you feel it, pack up! Cool rocks. I’m dying to go find some pretty things in the ground!!! We have been still for too long. It is giving me the opportunity to process a lot of what we found in Arizona this year though.
Awesome video of such a unique place! Glad you follow your intuition, we do the same and always feel good about it. Sometimes we discover there’s nothing necessarily amiss or wrong with where we are, there’s just somewhere else we need to be ;) Safe travels!
there is caves by there and recorded bones of giants were taken out by the Smithsonian ,also the caves opening is marked by the Mason's that at one time held meeting in the cave..
Looks like you've been in our backyard recently! We're currently near Redmond; that end clip looked like the lava cast forest area. Super cool place to visit if you've never been.

So I am only seeing 250lbs limit. No wording on the website for 25lbs a day.
Dave looked like he was in sheer joy as he was digging out the obsidian! 🥰

I lived in Burns for a few years, my husband worked at the mill in Hines. We had horses and went on trail rides, great fun.
I never thought of Oregon as desert area. Trip.
The remoteness of that area is one of the best things you can warn someone about. Great find.
Awesome place to visit.
Love your videos Carrie.
Beautiful rocks.
When you get that gut feeling to leave...leave.
Awesome spot. Just like glass mountain. HAPPY TRAILS

Detroit Lake near Salem is my favorite place in the world. Its a fisherman's paradise. Hot Springs nearby too.
wow that is so beautiful it almost looks like Tigers Eye it would make some great jewelry....
Wow, what beautiful stuff! I agree that the area is pretty as well.
Wonderful rocks colors
Carrie, that shade of red is PERFECT on you!
Awesome find!
Your so blessed to be doing this. It was my dream at one time.
We are loving this time! So very thankful. 😀😀😀

Rule 1: always trust your gut! What a haul! That mahogany is spectacular!
Your videos are so relaxing and just started watching them love the music too. I could fall asleep to it, the nature so nice and I love obsidian.
I am so glad Dave found some pieces, they were gorgeous. As Always, thank you for taking the internet people along with you.
Awesome area, awesome obsidian! 👍😎🇨🇦📷

WOW!!! congratulations!!! you always have interesting things to offer, thank you!
You’re going to have to get a trailer to haul around all the rocks you guys find!
Good to know ty,😊

Wonderful video! I would love finding obsidian. The ones you found were beautiful. Very interesting.👍😁
Love you guys!!

You must trust your intuition, especially since Dave had such a strong feeling about leaving that place 💜
Beautiful area!
Awesome

I live in La Pine. Near Newberry Crater, another great place to see obsidian, but it cannot be taken home, sorry.
For black obsidian I go to CA
Off 395 it's all over the ground
To pick up.
That obsidian is gorgeous! What will you do with it all?
You could have some jewelry made out of those smaller pieces. I do admire that you guys listen to your gut and leave when you need to. Good video.
How fun-thanks y'all 🤩🙏
We sure had a lot of obsidian laying around the house as kids
The Native Americans make arrowheads out of obsidian. I found a whole pile of arrowheads on some property where I used to live in Cavecreek AZ
ya did good, Dave. I see some jewelry in the future for Carrie ; >
Curious if y’all had cell service up there?
Dave, may I ask why did you choose a van over a motor home or travel trailer?
Ah, he's caught the bug. Careful, it's a heavy hobby! LOL. Take a walk and keep your eyes open is a very good mantra.
Have u guys considered getting bicycles? I'm looking to get an electric bike, but hate to add something to the back of my class b.
What do you recommend for digging and harvesting obsidian? Hammer and chisel?
Gloves, a rock hammer and eye protection
Chisels and prybars if your not collecting loose materials
I've legally collected obsidian from quite a few places, including GB. Whoever told you GB is the only place was mistaken
😎
Dont smack it full on, strike it at an angle along the edges
😎💜💜💜💜💜
What a great looking trans couple.
Great vid guys, looks like you had a blast.
If youre ever looking for spots to rockhound in Oregon, send me a message ^^
Hope to see more from you two
Thank you! I just found a really cool Yellowstone Agate. Wish you could check it out! 👍😀
Awesome
