Same here. Listening to lyrics demeaning women, talking about drugs and violence is not my thing. But BTS has poetic content, social commentary, sharp comebacks and I love it. I wish I could understand all the subtleties though but grateful to those who translate and explain the cultural nuances to us.

60 yr old Army and i did and still do not care for most western rap, but BTS changed all that for me. Their messages are very meaningful. They started to help the Youth of their day and ended up impacting all ages.
When you watch RM and Jimin interview for RM new album you will see that even currently they are still getting hate. Billboard changed the qualifications of their ranking system because of BTS. Suga at his concert last year before he would play the piano, and maybe guitar he would bang on the piano to show it was live, still 11 years later.
Also, Suga visited Steve Aoki around 1 1/2 years ago and he has a wall of BTS and Suga thought he had just put up for his visit, no he has that much respect for the group. Aoki also has an indoor trampoline in his house they jumped on, it was nice to see Suga have fun and relax.
Suggest On at Grand Central Station for the Jimmy Fallon show. Run BTS Live Busan concert. Psy That That ( feat & prod by Suga ( he also wrote , learned choreo and was in the mv)
The Rose is another group: ILYSB, Back to Me, Sorry are just a few.
Some reactors watch the color coded lyrics or dance practice first so that when they watch the live or mv they are not trying to absorbed choreo, lyrics, video. Or do all three. dance practices don't usually have lyrics.
Did you see Jimin and Jk flying off the tables during Suga rap? They are usually worth watching 2-3 times just to see what was missed.

I wish that this was the first song and MV from them that I saw back in 2017, because when it happened in 2021, I became an instant fan. I missed four years! Instead I saw them do DNA on the AMAs, which I liked, but not nearly as much as Mic Drop. I also thought, “Okay, I usually do not listen to hip hop or rap, but THIS song and MV is straight fire. And since, I have come to really appreciate it much more.
If you watch the background video, you will see how they made the scene in the darkroom with the super-slow motion. Soooo cool. They always have such great ideas, but then they execute them to perfection. As producers, you know how hard that is to do on a consistent basis. But they do it.

Steve Aoki also did a song with RM, Jungkook and Jimin titled 'Waste It On Me'. The Official MV for it is actually quite good even though it didn't have the boys in the video but rather several Asian celebrities including the popular comedian Ken Jeong. But the song is really good. Steve also produced the vocal line's beautiful song 'The Truth Untold' which was written by RM. Would love if you react to The Truth Untold.

  • @lightefilit

It is a diss track! The song is basically swaggering about their success to their haters. They do have simpler "on the surface" songs (especially if it's a hype or fun song), not everything has to be deep and complicated.
I honestly prefer the original Korean version, but this one is a hype version, so I still like it too :D
P.S.: it was a bigger than usual budget, several millions USD. But the hardest part was to secure permission to close down one of their major highways to Seoul to film this.

The 3 English songs (Dynamite, Butter, Permission to Dance) came out during the pandemic, and were meant to be light and mood-lifting during that awful time. They didn’t write those 3 songs, thus they are very different to the complex lyricism we usually encounter in BTS’s own compositions. They aren’t Army’s favorite songs, but they served as an introduction to a wider English speaking audience who had been resistant to music in a foreign language. The songs achieved that goal.

Their Korean and Japanese songs are so good. Their music encouraged me to start learning these languages to better understand the deeper meanings. It also taught me even more how as an american we are so unaccepting and lazy to learn other cultures.

I have to say when I discovered BTS, the Idol video was a recommendation. I was so drawn to RM, I actually look up his solo mixtape and videos first. There I was a 57 year old grandma, who hated all the rap she had heard before, binge watching this rapper who was a Korean “idol”. I watched all the BTS videos in the order they were released and then listened to all the albums in the same fashion. I am now a “silver army”, card carrying fan member. RM is my bias. V’s voice is my favorite to listen to, and my favorite song is Jin’s Epiphany. The lyrics to this song hit me so hard and cemented my love for this group. Now I am almost 62, all my coworkers knows I love the group. They buy me things or let me know they saw something. You guys fell down the rabbit hole. Welcome to the Army guys!!

Love your reaction. There is a 'behind' that shows more of the production, including the explosion and them trying to act chill and cool with it as nervous as they were for the loud bang LOL. Yes Steve is a famous DJ who pulls 50K-100K-ish level crowds to his shows. He is pretty famous for making it fun and there may even be food or water thrown into the crowd 🤣 They are so supportive of each other as artists and human beings. Steve also worked with them on 'The Truth Untold', which is a sad but beautiful vocal line song (no MV for it but there are performances). They also did 'Waste It On Me' together which is Steve's song which has a MV with an all Asian cast. It is too funny and such a chill but viby kind of song. Can't wait for the next reaction. Later!

I predict that the BTS rap line will make you a rap fan. They did me. I still don’t always like it because of the messaging, but I love BTS rap for the same reason - the messaging.
Dynamite was in 2020. This was 2018. This actually did get some radio play, but you have to realize the utter intractability of the lion’s share of the US radio industry when it comes to playing any non-English language song. They just refuse to do it…even when the song is like half in English like this one is. In fact, even the BTS all-English songs have a hard time getting spins compared to songs by people Western acts. There is a recent interview by John Bellion talking about how the Jung Kook song he worked on last year (SEVEN) was the fastest song ever to get 1 BILLION streams (in 108 days, breaking the 112-day record of Miley Cyrus’ song Flowers), but it struggled to get radio play compared to Western acts with songs out at the same time. It’s honestly infuriating.
Highly recommend d the Live performance of this - either in Seoul or at Yet to Come Busan (combined with Run BTS).

Dynamite isn't really what introduced BTS to the west. Some have just caught up late into their discography. But there's plenty of time to get into it if you're interested. They make really good music with substance such as make you appreciate yourself better. If one chooses to look closely into their rap songs, one will be amazed at how relatable the songs are and actually can stir up one's senses and think about experiences and learn from it. BTS songs are more meaningful and has a lot of passion if one chooses to look into it. But no one really gets there if the mind delves on superficial aspect like spewing empty words. -53yrs old mom who is not a rap fan before i discovered BTS.

I missed you! Welcome back! This is a basic f u to haters. The guys in the hoods are haters. BTS was really suffering so much negativity - there are a few songs in which they talk about it .😊

If im not mistaken, this really was a farewell to the haters. They didn’t bother much with diss tracks after this. Though Namjoon's new album might be making a liar out of me.😂

No Scott, do not shut up and go on talking because you were so right n what you were saying: this and their other great songs should have been the ones that opened the american doors/market for them.. but nope, it was the light trylogy. I think their other songs are way much more interesting than the trylogy. Don't missunderstand, I love all their songs but like @devamail1 said in a comment below it is a bit shocking that "people not army" got to know them by those songs. Anyway, Thanks a lot for reacting to Mic Drop, one of Army's fav. The dance practice video to this song is one of my all time favorites!!! Lots of love from Chile!!!

The original has more Korean lyrics with the same beat, just not drum rolls etc.
They were forced to make English songs to get radio play and soothe the feelings of the lazy people who won't adapt to subs and Closed Captions.
As a long time ARMY I find this insulting since growing up I watched and sang "Feliz Navidad" and "Frere' Jacque" without any issues.
