I happened to interview Macy on two occasions and she is a really interesting person and a unique artist. She told me she was always very conscious of her croaky voice and being tall and having a distinctive appearance when she was young going to a school where the other students didn't look like her, so she became quite introverted. But her career has been a revelation in her discovering that the things that made her feel isolated then became the things that made her a success as an artist, of course backed up by the fact she is a genuinely talented songwriter and performer.

A similar artist/potential Female Friday pick with vocal scratchiness is Nikka Costa, who has been putting out charting music since she was 5 years old (at 9, had a #1 in Italy with a cover of Irene Cara's "On My Own"). Recommended in order of preference is "Like A Feather", "Everybody Got Their Something", "Push & Pull", "Get Off Of My Sunshine", "Master Blaster", her cover of Prince's (recorded famously by Sinead O' Connor) "Nothing Compares 2 U" & her funk cover with the group Scary Pockets of Bobby McFerrin's "Don't Worry Be Happy".

Macy's voice is sweet and ethereal, in contrast to another artist I urge you to check out: Skunk Anansie (the lead singer - Skin - is amazing, with powerful vocals that can also retract into a whisper) - starting with "I can Dream" or "Charlie Big Potato". They were big in the 90's and 2000's (at least, in Europe) Lotsa luv ❣

I saw her in a teeny little club in Boston the February 2000, right after this song hit the radios. She is TALL and a little bit of a rauncy performer. One of the most amazing shows of my life. Sy Smith opened for her. She's has been a back up singer for a crap ton of people and was Gray's back up singer that tour. It was standing room only and essentially it was one huge group of people all dancing with each other. It didn't matter who you were with, you were dancing with everyone around you. Everyone was pretty much drippin' sweat and having the best time! The show started late and ran long so when it was over my roomie and I had to run for the train to get out of the city and back to our car. My hair was frozen stiff by the time we got to the train station. Great times.

She sold more than 100 million records and had many top ten hits. Her best known song is "Tennessee Waltz" but she also had hits like "How Much Is That Doggie In The Window", "Old Cape Cod", "Mocking Bird Hill" and "Allegheny Moon". I always thought she looked so tough and had a sweet but strong voice so this song was always such a treat because it's an unabashed love song. Thank you for covering this. I need to go add it to my playlist now. Can't believe I didn't have it on it.

Holy cow! I forgot about this song and I always really loved it. Thank you so much for the reminder of it. :) I am old (53) and you often react to songs from my youth, usually you like them which makes me super happy to see that songs that I have loved are appreciated by younger folks. Sometimes you remind me of songs that I have forgotten and that is a gift.

I worked with Macy Grey before she was famous. In L.A., everyone is usually working at a job to pay the bills while they try to make a name for themselves. She mentioned she was trying to make it as a musician. She asked me if I wanted to listen to her demo tape. I kind of sighed because since a lot of people you meet are trying to be famous you listen to a lot of demo tapes, watch a lot of audition videos, read a lot of scripts. Most of it mediocre. But you try to be supportive so I said yes. She gave me her tape and when I returned it, I just asked her “What are you doing working here?” It was so obvious she was a cut above everyone else.
Anyway, as a person, she was great. Very laid back, smart and a nice sense of humor. She eventually quit because she started making a name for herself. I remember the first time I heard her on the radio, I was so excited for her. And happy. Because she deserved it.

I never was a fan but glad Amber picked a unique artist and one from the '90s. We had so many great female singer-songrwriters in the '90s. And Jay liked her! And it was a slow song, too! Lol.

She's still out there making music, and still killing it.
I can't recommend the album "Stripped" enough. A little three piece jazz combo. And from that album, "The Heart" will melt you.

This lady was so popular in 2000. She was everywhere. For me, 1996-2001 was a great time for music. You didn’t just have teen pop and autotuned garbage. One of my favourite artists at that time was a half Trinidadian-Canadian singer with soul named Amanda Marshall. She’s made a comeback recently. Elton John loved her. Her songs Birmingham, If I Didn’t Have You, Dark Horse, Let It Rain and Believe In You are absolute bangers and vocal marvels. If you can find a live performance of hers from the 90s, you’re laughing. She’s 50 now, but she still has an incredible voice.

    Top 5 song in 1999
Not only was this her only hit in the US, it was the only song to make the Billboard Pop chart, period.
By accident, she should've had another single show in the Top 40

The lead single, Do Something, was nominated for a Grammy and MTV VMA. It seemed to be played a lot on the radio (in Australia at least) but for some reason never really charted anywhere in the world. It's a great song that Rob and Amber should check out. Ditto OutKast's 1994 song "Git Up, Git Out", which the Macy Gray song samples.

She's so talented. It's criminal that her career wasn't more remarkable. "I Try" (1999/US#5) was her only Hot100 single in the US. She had a small handful of minor hits in other English-speaking countries (UK, IRE, CAN, AUS, NZ) and did some cool guest appearances with other acts. But she's basically a one-hit-wonder in her home country, despite her impressive talent.
