It really bothers me that this was not a massive worldwide hit.
The band is fine. The arrangments are crisp, and add drama, tension and wistfullness, to what is already a knockout song.
The lyrics are tantalising. Like all the best songs, there's a strong element of poetry/imagery, which means you can discuss interpretive possibilities until everyone falls off their barstools.
So this is a gem, and I think it just needed a champion with influence, to get it playing. I played it to my students (a private university in seaside town in Guangdong) in 2010, and they didn't seem knocked out. I couldn't understand why not. Because it was Taiwanese? I suspect there's an intellectual level in the song (the symbolism in the lyrics) that did not appeal. That, and because the music is more like something from the best 60s rock bands?
You're not going to get this level of pop-music in a semi-totalitarian country like China. To me, this sort of work (and Deserts Chang, same) is the greatest advert for "democracy" (diverse, non-coercive culture) that you're going to find.
