If you're interested in learning more, there's a really great movie in German based on this called _Die Walle_ or _The Wave_ that really hits hard - ruclips.net/video/qkztDM5ukbw/видео.html And there's also a German TV show coming to Netflix worldwide on November 1st this year - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We_Are_the_Wave Its an absolutely insane story and it's actually even more sinister than Dave lets on, he downplays the more violent and nasty elements but the film doesn't shy away.

I was totally expecting the students to not accept that it was all a ruse, and continue on with their Third Wave, having it snowball into much much worse, like with criminal charges and bloodshed. As a Dollop fan, I've been conditioned to expect the worst.
you'd enjoy "Die Welle" ("The Wave") a German film based on The Third Wave experiment. It does snowball into worse things, which I was surprised by, but then I also admire it for taking it that far.
1:02:45 This moment reminded me of something that occurred in my senior history class. Our history teacher was very similar to Mr. Jones and would do little hypothetical exercises now and then. One of the hypothetical scenarios he gave us was that we were to choose between living on one of two islands, one island where there are no laws and no rules and you could eat or kill whatever the island has to offer, and the other island which had a baseline moral code and the food was rashioned and there was a limit on the animals you can kill. Each side of the classroom was an island, and he told us to go to the side of island we wanted to live on. All of the boys went to the side of island 1, and all of the girls went to the side of island 2. I was the only boy in the class who went to island 2.
I remember reading a book about this movement in high school history class, though we didn't do any simulations of the sort Mr. Jones encouraged. I do recall, however, that some of my classmates who were in Band jokingly altered the motto of The Third Wave as a salute to their (at the time) slightly autocratic Band Director.
You can't teach an ugly subject like fascism without getting ugly yourself. It's kinda like learning pottery: at some point, you're going to get your hands dirty. Ron Jones taught that lesson well, and I hope it's a lesson that the participants carry with them for the rest of their lives.
Last podcast on the left was tje first podcast I ever listened to. Today I ran out of episodes and listened to the "egg war" episode. I am not exaggerating when I say I cannot remember the last time I laughed so hard. Ive now hear 2 episodes (billy Hitler) but im pretty sure I have a new favorite podcast.
This is the first time I’ve watched the video while listening and it’s a bit surreal as their voices are very familiar but I’m not used to actually seeing them speaking.
love the show guys! I'm gonna keep an eye out if y'all are gonna be in OHIO any time soon. I sadly missed Gareth when he was in Dayton last. I can attest to Bombas commitment to sharing the love as my NPO just got another shipment of hundreds of pairs of socks. Much love Dollop :)
The prerequisite for genocide, a large population who have been "oppressed" then that deep sense of resentment placed on an entire group. Rwanda, Bosnia, Malaysia all had groups with real suffering, begin to explain their oppression by blaming the "other". It's human nature. Then the fear of being cast out comes in. Once tribal group blame starts spinning up, only truly heroic moral courage can stand against it.
there's a German movie loosely based of this called Die Welle (The Wave) set closer to the late 00's great movie. Crazy to hear an American teacher was able to push this this far before another adult caught on.
Was Garett playing slap the bag before this episode? That’s how Wisconsin people consume wine. Or just possibly having a big ol lollipop. Both activities rock and I’d be willing to bet it’s one of the two. Cause mouth but also vibes
Yes, the rapid pace is astounding, but these are kids. Built to accept authority. And they all already loved and trusted him. As an adult, we can't relate to these kids...but how do u think trumpers or "proud boys" or jonestown or...the list is endless...any extremist group forms. This exact way.
Actually, this was before Zimbardo. Third Wave in 1967, Zimbardo experiment in 1971 (both in Palo Alto). Zimbardo discusses The Third Wave in his book "The Lucifer Effect" (pp. 281-3).
The human minds strongest trick is to rationalize any and all behavior. An unchangeable moral code, outside of human creation, is necessary for purpose and meaning and to have a chance to avoid tearing each other apart.
I've always wondered about the similarities with military training specifically. As a member of the armed forces would you say specifically the brainwashing is necessary or an unnecessary part of military training
@@kotabear6556 It’s necessary to be able to absorb all the information, and training for the next 3-4 months. The first 3 weeks are called Red Phase and that’s where all the movie stuff happens, it’s supposed to break people and get them used to their new life of following orders. Most people “break programming” once they’re sent to their units because you regain access to the outside world.
It's interesting to think about what type of speeh and ideas are verboten today. It's interesting to watch who is chanting in unison, who is demanding obedience, who is willing to destroy reputations and cast out.
You're not just seeing this on the right, but also on the left and center. Every one needs to be careful of the bubble they are closest to falling into.
The centre is what gets steamrolled by fascists because they don't have strong enough beliefs to follow a charismatic leader or movement into this kind of thing. I strongly disagree with the idea that the modern left is anywhere similar to the right on this though. There's a million reasons that the modern left doesn't have the same issue with authoritarian beliefs. I agree we all need to step out of our bubbles and be careful about making sure we get information from unbiased sources but I don't agree that _everyone_ is equal on this spectrum.
"They were in the Right...." probably someone would conclude "The Alt-Right" or "The Far-Right" today. Sorry to conservative or republican friends, it's a joke.
That's AMAZING. Honestly? Students of all ages need this, but especially kids. It's sickening to see that so many adults in America have always _been_ fascistic in nature, and are teaching that to their _children._ It just makes me wonder exactly HOW this is "required reading" in Israel, considering it's an apartheid state... like... we so easily forget the lessons we already learnt, and often twist our logic in order to use such lessons in "die Wille zur macht."
Dave’s laughter is always heavily exaggerated and once you realise it, you can’t unhear it. “Haaaaaaaaaaaaaa..” **runs out of air** **immediately straight-faced again**

Isn't it amazing how much of this we'd never know if we just did our homework and spit out the prescribed results?
Please please please market and advertise this podcast more!!! These guys are amazing comedians and this podcast is so highly underrated.

This is one of the most constant thing I've ever truly believed 100%.
Children are kinda monsters... and that continues through adulthood. Only an aware, compassionate society has any hope of fixing it
This episode always makes me tear up. Something about the description of how the students reacted just gets to me.

Very poingiant with the eco-fascism vs eco-socialism dichotomy. Not many people understand that yet.
