    Thank you for making this video + featuring me in it. You werent even that combative, im actually glad to discuss things- its just hard to tell tone sometimes in text and the character limit on twitter can make things hard to discuss sometimes and generally I am met with a lot of rude comments + insults + even ableism when trying to discuss things regarding accessibility, so I would like to apologize if I came off defensive or dismissive at first. Its hard to balance accessibility especially for killers like doctor imo. But i think just because it is hard doesnt mean it shouldn't happen. Horror also doesnt mean that it should lack accessibility options.. so many horror games have amazing accessibility options. I love DBD and its my favorite game. I do suffer facing 3 killers due to accessibility issues as you saw in my video but that doesnt mean I don't want to play this game 🥺. I appreciate you offering alrernatives (the screams were my favorite LOL) because I can see the argument that replacing them is better than removing them. I also appreciate you bringing these ideas to life. This was a very fun watch + thank you for taking the time to also add warnings ❤
    Im hoping with more people discussing accessibility concerns in the game that bhvr will make a statement / begin to add more options. ❤

    Hey fellas,
    I forgot to mention it in the video, but in regards to motor accessibility, BHVR notably changed the mashing on Second Hook Stage and Wiggling to skill checks, which can be considered an advancement made for motor accessibility. I personally remember playing with many people who died on Second Stage just because they couldn't keep up with the mashing after playing for however long. This hopefully shows *some* interest on BHVR's part in creating alternate control methods for those who suffer from motor disabilities.

    DBD is probably the only video game community that has accused me and another person in a thread of supposedly wanting an unfair advantage because we have noise sensitivity and hate Dredge's Nightfall moaning.

    There is actually a "phobia" setting in house flipper which I like a lot, it replaces all cockroaches with glass shards to clean up with the same tool. Very similar to Lethal Company's spider replacement, but it's simple recontextualizations like that that just make it less arbitrarily unpleasant!

    There's something called “Curb-Cut Effect,” which is a subset of Universal Design principles, highlights the phenomenon where designs or initiatives intended to benefit specific groups inadvertently improve accessibility for a broader range of people, meaning making something accessible for the minority, also helps the vast majority anyway, think of the curb cut, which the name comes from, of the sound notification of a spotlight when it becomes green, it helps both the visually impaired but also helps a random guy who maybe is busy answering an email on his phone etc etc
    Anyone who studied anything related to design knows it's one of the first thing they teach you because it's always a net positive

    • @el_doinko
      @el_doinko  Месяц назад +2

      That's interesting! Yeah I didn't use this term in the video but I suppose one way to look at it is to lower the "skill floor," or rather, to make the game easier to pick up for newcomers in general, by giving them the tools to better approach, or "access," the game.

    oh and for phobias, i literally have friends who cant play against certain killers because of their phobias. having a coulrophobia option that changes clown from being a clown (like with his original gas bomb soldier guy concept or something) or a anti-zombie option that replaces nemesis zombies and the rpd map zombies with robots or something, idk. it would make the game better for a decent amount of ppl

  • @NazgulianKing
    @NazgulianKing Месяц назад +3

    With plague Ive always thought their could be an option to make her vomit confetti and her barfing noice laughing. And survivors could be giggling. On the topic of directional audio I dont like it one bit purely because people who dont have a condition will use it. Like I use the visual terror radius because I cant hear softer noices but my brothers also use it and they have no hearing problem

    • @el_doinko
      @el_doinko  Месяц назад +2

      This is something I'm vocal about at the end of the video, but essentially, utilizing accessibility features as a fully able-bodied person shouldn't really create a significant difference in their skill ceiling. It depends on what implementations there are ofc but things like directional indicators or sound effect subtitles really won't elevate your gameplay. What serves as scaffolding for one player is not going to be a crutch for another player.

  • @ouch9129
    @ouch9129 Месяц назад +2

    I think it's *super* hard to balance a lot of these things.
    Killer Footsteps and Survivor footsteps are important parts of gameplay. If you add an indicator and it's inaccurate, it's not useful. If you add it and it IS accurate, suddenly everyone HAS to use it because it becomes wallhacks, and you've also completely ruined every stealth perk and killer that's ever been added.
    I think maybe one nice way to approach it could be an indicator priority system? Similar to how you showed the gen detection thing, the volume level of certain sounds would be prioritized.
    Maybe within close proximity stuff like wraith's breathing, medium volume killer movement, could be prioritized.
    But if you're near a generator, the generator indicator could be prioritized.
    Other very important sounds like Wraith Uncloak, Chainsaws, etc. Could then take priority over the Gen Noise.
    The movement indicators could also become less accurate during chase and when within Terror Radius to prevent it from becoming a wallhack situation.
    Killers could probably benefit from keeping Survivor footsteps when they're close by, since trying to chase without footsteps is genuinely really hard.
    As for Plague, maybe it could be an option to make her attacks utilize her incense instead of Puke when the disability option is enabled. Have her hold up the censer, charge it up, and then make it a stream of smoke that comes from the censer rather than her mouth. Instead of having puke on Survivors, that white smoke could linger on them.
    Clown I think probably should have more visual clutter than a letterbox effect. That wouldn't be nearly as impactful and would be an immediate switch on for players.
    I think a good method could be to change it from visual distortion to just an actual smoke overlay on the screen, possibly also hiding the Red Stain while that option is on to make it roughly equal power.
    As for Dredge, they're removing the loud wooshing sound that comes from him, so maybe they can add back as non-directional audio during Nightfall for an accessibility option.

    11:49 I love the idea of including the subtitles "Killer attack misses" and then you still getting hit. This happens way too much to me as a Switch DBD gamer 😂
    12:48 I think I mentioned this on Chey's video, but I was thinking that maybe making it so the lights at the top of a gen brighten or get brighter to show a survivor is actively working on a gen (both killer and survivor sided) might help Deaf players. Do you have any thoughts on that?
    15:10 I understand where this creator is coming from, but at the end of the game it's a game and the point is to have fun. Some people will see it as "cheesing the game", others will find this as a silly way to do the daily, but at the end of the day it still made it accessible to the people who couldn't participate in that part of the game at all before.
    16:28 an auto chase sounds so freaking fun almost like a quick time event, but I know so many people would get so mad at this especially with current issues about not being able to vault or throw a pallet even with the prompt to do so. I also wonder how this would affect mind games mid chase since you can't really mind game a current bot.
    I'm commenting on any and all accessibility videos for DBD because I am an accessibility worker for my school, so I'm very passionate about the topic especially for one of my favorite games. Thank you so much for spreading the word and giving great alternatives for the game!

    also how would you made spirit accesible for playing her, i can't track via audio so i just can't play her even tho she keeps getting cool skins and her power is cool. giving her the ability to see even with killer instinct during phase would arguably break her strenght wise. idk how she's fixable in that regard without impacting her strenght lvl or nurse and motion sickness specifically(tho arguably she would need a complete rework). there's just a lot of standart setting that are missing from the game. some maps like badham are just very dark, dreamworld on top of it from freddy makes it even darker, dreamworld on rpd is a nightmare imo pun intended. the fact that there's not even a brightness setting is shocking. i play both sides, im mainly a achivement hunter, but a shear lack of accesibility even basics are just missing from the game, and i recall there were ppl againts the visual heartbeat when it was announced cause it made it ''easier to hear someone coming'' sry but some of us basically were guessing all the time before that

    • @el_doinko
      @el_doinko  Месяц назад +3

      Yea this video mostly talks about survivor accessibility since Killers are a whole nother can of worms.
      For killers, perhaps they can include a visual indicator for survivor noises, similar to the radial indicators I made in the video. And it would have different icons for breathing/footsteps/injured noises, and the subtitles would say which survivor it was.
      Now that I think about it it's kind of insane how veteran players know all the voice differences between all the survivors, but its something that takes so long for new players to learn.
      At the moment, I feel like Dried Cherry Blossom might help for playing Spirit without audio, but ofc we dont want accessibility to require the use of specific add-ons.

  • @DCPTF2
    @DCPTF2 Месяц назад

    I agree with a lot of this, my only concern is when it does start to give already good players an edge, the Visual heart was meant to be for people with a hearing impairment know when a killer is getting closer, however most streamers and competitive players use it almost like a 5th perk so they can talk and don't have to listen out for when the killer is approaching, hell it's actually interesting watching a survivor stream with the heart turned off vs one with it turned on, as the streamers with it off get caught out massively more then the ones with it on

    • @el_doinko
      @el_doinko  Месяц назад +1

      I just don't see how that's a bad thing lmao. Like a lot of people play this game while interacting with chat or in a big voicechat and it's nice to be able to have good information without having to mute or tell your friends to be quiet because killer is nearby or spirit is phasing or something. I just feel like the fear of elevating good players shouldn't prevent us from scaffolding bad players.

    • @DCPTF2
      @DCPTF2 Месяц назад

      @@el_doinko and there in lies the problem, it wouldn't be for people with hearing impairments it would just be for streamers to scream at each other and still have advantage over the killer, if it's truly something to help someone it shouldn't then be abusable by those who don't need it because they want to talk to a chat or friends, hell as a killer i don't get a little radar telling me when i get close to survivors that i can just flick on and i'm visually impaired myself i can't see out of my left eyes and when i get flashlight blinded because i forgot to put on Lightborne is rather painful but they won't alter that at all for me will they?

    • @el_doinko
      @el_doinko  Месяц назад

      @@DCPTF2 You talk as if someone else's gameplay experience somehow negatively affects yours. If these features are implemented, and they supposedly offer an advantage, you'll also have access to them, so the playing field *is* level.
      ALSO I included an example about flashlights in the video lmfaooo

  • @alexagracom
    @alexagracom Месяц назад

    Something simple like the flashlight effect could have a dark option but most other stuff should be kept the way they are. If you had text on screen for every sound it whould be unfair and everyone whould just abuse it. Altered sound effects sounds silly and whould also be clearer to hear in most situations so you whould also have a slight advantage for using them. Lastly implementing phobia filters to horror games is beyond stupid Imo. It's horror, you are supposed to be scared. Maybe in games like Minecraft you could have a filter for kids and so but the idea of playing Silent hill and pyramid head looking like pickle Rick sounds atrocious. There is a phobia for every single thing on this planet. If we make plague a kid with a watergun, clown an alcoholic hobo and doctor into electro from Spiderman still people will come out complaining about chucky cause dolls are scary and he should be turned into Woody from Toy Story. So what if the game is not for everyone? It is not and that's perfectly fine cause no game is for everyone. I really am sorry for the people with hearing disabilities cause they are the most affected but I don't know how to implement a solution that will not break the game. And to all of those complaining cause they have phobias. We don't care. This is a horror game so you should be scared. If you don't like it don't play it.

  • @Secret0zv

    Phobia settings in horror games are stupid. We have a simple way of dealing with that already called *getting over it.* If you're scared in a horror game, the game is doing it's job right. If you're too scared to play and don't like it, then leave. I love accessibility in games, but this is like adding options to help a wheelchair user in the 100 yard dash. You can't cater to everyone, especially people who don't like and can't handle your game.

    • @nhack5137
      @nhack5137 Месяц назад +1

      I agree but if the main focus ain't the spiders, it's not that hard to add that filter, a phobia a majority of people have, it's not that deep to do that, just like changing the noises of vomiting said in the video, the sound isn't the main problem, it's the effect of the sound, changing it to a less disgusting sound is not that bad, but people should expect those things in an horror game like dbd anyways

    I can understand what ya mean, but accessibility options have to be accessible for all and with that those that aren't at such disadvantages they will be able to use these options to gain an advantage and make the competition in the game far harder them it should be for those not using or who have disadvantages requiring the accessibility.
    If it wasn't a competitive online salt festival it wouldn't be that big of a deal to add accessibility options.

      That's just it though, once you're good at the game, lowering the bar for entry, or scaffolding gameplay for newer or less abled players, is not actually going to negatively impact your experience when playing against them. It's just fearmongering on... yourself. There's hints of that here and there, like that TLOU2 example, or perhaps Street Fighter 6's Dynamic controls (which can't be used online), but until you have a tangible example of accessibility options "ruining" a game you're just jumping at shadows.
