With Zenitsu I really think that it's his anxiety and fear shutting off since he's asleep, so he's able to shine in what he's learned. But he still doesn't remember exactly what he does when he is asleep.
Yes. There is no split personality. When he is awake, he is uncapable because of his fears, self-hate and traumas, but he is strong and kind. When he is asleep he is free of his nervousness and low self-esteem and he can show his REAL character. He is both the same but, unconscious, he feels no fear or shame.
Damn you got that right 😂😂 yes it is his fear and anxiety its because he doesn't believe hes strong enough so when he sleeps all of his doubts about himself are gone like it was a dream when hes asleep he acts like the perfect person he inspires to be in his dreams the strong and reliable zenitsu that protects and makes people happy
It would be the most hilarious thing if Zenitsu got to be a Hashira some day but kept this attitude and had some rookies going with him on a mission and these rookies were super confused like: "How is this scared-of-his-own-shadow bastard a Hashira? I'm going to die with this dude leading the mission!" 🤣
I think its very simple: the only things holding Zenitsu back are his own feelings of unworthiness and self-doubt. He's fearful because he doesn't believe he's as powerful as he actually is. When Zenitsu loses consciousness, his brain shuts off and all that negative self-talk is gone. With nothing to hold him back anymore, he can unleash his full strength. That's what we're seeing. He's not changing into a new person, we're just seeing him without the part of himself that makes him _think_ he's weak.
The artists did a great job at making this spider family look as creepy as possible. Huzzah for an epic Zenitsu moment! I love it when he's passed out.... because he stops screaming lol. But I do give him a pass for being afraid of spider people. That one is a legit reason haha.

His theme is not one of growth through strength but through character: he’s already strong enough to defeat almost every demon he faces, he’s just too timid and scared and burdened by his feelings of inadequacy to even try. Until he’s asleep. The concept of an alter ego would cut against the grain of this powerful theme.
