Very useful video! It's given me the confidence to try it now: )
Your simple solution for getting the needle bar height set correctly when timing is particularly useful. I've been guessing it before!

You did not show the spring on the friction wheel bracket.

    Thank you!!
I am trying to repair my late grandmothers 1973 Elna SP 31 sewing machine, which seems be be virtually identical to your model.
I fixed the needling timing so it's picking up a thread again following your video, however now that I'm running it I've noticed motor is making a loud buzzing sound when it runs.
Any ideas as to the cause that would be greatly appreciated.
    Video of the issue: ruclips.net/video/OdH5J3xRmOQ/видео.html
Sometimes it will run for a few seconds before making the buzzing noise.

Sorry but I don't know. When I saw your comment I was sure it was the timing belt against loose wires but then I watched your vid and I can see that your belt is disengaged. So it can't be that. It definitely sounds like something is loose in there. All I can suggest is to disassemble and wiggle stuff. Good luck

On mine, sometimes the thread in the bobbin area gets tangled and many threads go down there, and then the wheel won't turn. I cut those threads, and then clean out any threads in the bobbin area. I'm not sure why it happens. One thing that helps for me: make sure the threads are positioned away from you when a stitch is started. It also seems to help to thread the little hook/loop that is down and to the right of the tension adjust.
