My grandma was a noted home baker, people ordered cakes from her.One of her "specialties" was she would open a beer, pour some in the cake batter to make it lighter with the fizz and drink the rest of the bottle.lol.
That could be good. But I don't recommend Asda's blackforest cake. It's just bland chocolate flavor cake, with a few glace cherries. Very disappointing. Can't beat a blackforest gateau.
Sorry to hear of your injury, get well soon . Nice review of beer, with great explanation of cellar temperature and why some of our beers are often served that way.
I agree that if you need to heal we will be there waiting for the next video. My entire family watch your videos including my 73 year old mom. You have a good channel and people that know how things should be watch your videos.
Sorry to hear about your broken finger, I wish you a smooth and safe recovery, may your hand heal perfectly and properly. Hopefully you are right as rain very soon. All the best for you and your family and little Eva.😊
You never realise how much you need your little finger - until you can't use it. I broke mine, quite badly, nearly a year ago, when I was at work. Annoyingly, it was when I was doing a simple task that I had done hundreds of times before. I hope yours heals both quickly and properly.
I think thumbs count along with pinkies since you require both to competently hold things. Coming from a person who broke her thumb as a kid on her writing hand.
Northern Monk is a bit of a hometown success story for us Leeds folk and one of my favourite breweries, they do loads of these weird flavour stuff. They did a Collab with Seabrook's to do a cheese and onion crisp lager
Cellar temp is about 55 F, for those wondering, so definitely cool, chilled, but certainly not cold--and definitely best for dark beers like this! Some beers, like the (allegedly) ultra-rare Samichlaus, is supposed to be served at room temperature!
Have to hand it to you AS, you really broke down the flavor and aroma notes. Wrapped up the review in a real nice way and cast this beer in a great light.
Thank you! Tasting the sequence of flavours in ales is something I started doing initially to have something more than 'nice' to write on the Instagram reviews, but it turned into a habit that actually enhances my enjoyment of every pint now.
Having did the old person thing myself (hiking the first time) - glad you weren't so banged up you couldn't do anything for a bit. I had trouble walking for months, finally healed enough to be normal again, then fell again just getting the mail (wet grass tuft that was super saturated, ripped right out of the ground and down I went). I've rebuilt my muscles now, and actually fixate more now on keeping them strong. Best of luck that it heals correctly!
My mate had this tonight, I (in an entirely different part of the country) had the Apple Strudel and Custard IPA, also from Northern Monk. I can heartily recommend my choice to precede this!
" But Holmes, HOW did Atomic Shrimp's finger get injured?" "It's simple Watson, he was attacked by a 'pull tab' can. Poor bloke, he saw it coming for years." Seriously, mend soon and well.
I'm both a whisky nerd and a bit of a beer snob. I drink my whisky room temp and my beer "10-15 minutes out of the fridge" (probably about cellar temperature but that's not a common term around me). When I introduce my friends to craft beers and whiskies and such, I explain to them how temperature affects flavor and that there's a reason that the worst beers all advertise themselves as best served as cold as possible. That said, the best beer is the beer you like to drink, the way you like to drink it (and the same goes for any other beverage)
I do like the sweet stouts, there's a good variety out there. If you look around you can get some that look just like engine oil, but are beautifully delicious. And I like the way the taste changes as it warms up to room temp.
Cellar temperature is usually close to 13C (65F); below this temperature, the volatile fusols no longer release their aromas and the protein in some beer styles tends to form a haze
Oh, I hear you there. Last month I discovered 'strudel stout' and it was awesome. Strudel is a German kind of pie, with apple for instance. Very cloudy and smooth in texture.

Fantastic review Shrimp, and as an Englishmen I didn’t actually know about cellar temperature, which is strange as my father had a cellar bigger than our house where he stored his beer and wine. These drinks make me wonder what other treats would be good with beer… is there a Red Velvet Stout? That would be fascinating to see!
Amusingly, i have an entire mini-fridge i keep as warm as it'll go (mid-40s F, ~7c) specifically for dark beers, sour ales, ye olde belgians, etc. Just so they're that much warmer (i'm well aware its still not quite "cellar temp") when i desire to drink one. Absolutely spot on discussion of "why cellar temp?"
It's interesting to consider that beers that we associate with being served ice cold (even in England) such as lagers and pilsners would once also have been drunk at cellar temperature, because refrigeration didn't exist.
True, although countries with mountains might have stored ice in winter for cooling stuff in summer, and countries that aren't warmed by the gulf stream might have colder cellars anyway
I WISH it was "cellar temperature" here in Sydney; from what I hear, it was to reach 40°C, if not higher. Aussie summers are hell. Sweaty, gross, liable to reach human-body temps, bushfires are a damn-near certainty..."cellar temperature" would be a miracle.
I love banana bread beer which I used to buy in a bottle in Sainsbury's or maybe even Tesco??? Can't remember - but I do love the flavours in a black forest gateau so I will most probably give this a go. Thanks Mike! X
I liked Samuel Adams Cherry Wheat beer.My lawn mowing guy(who was supposed to abstain from alcohol though I didn't know it at the time)asked for a beer and I gave him one.He almost threw up,said that would cure him of drinking and never asked for a beer again.lol.If you never tried Pumpkin Ale the bitterness from the pumpkin is not noticeable in the beer ,that I could taste.
If you're not planning on taking yourself to A&E for an X ray (not always necessary) just make sure you check the bone is straight once the swelling starts to go down. I left one of mine to heal when it didn't look too bad and it healed crooked, it's been a source of discomfort ever since particularly in the winter
My head-canon for the broken Finger: While trying to admire a beautiful black moth which was trying to hide in the snowy white woods near Shrimp Cottage Mike leaned on his walking spoon, unfortunately Eva saw a nice Rock and hit the spoon. Now leaning on basically Air Mike fell on a Rock, maybe some type of Agate? Jenny aided first aid, but while laying down in the mud of Dorset Mike saw Mushrooms! What a lovely coincidence. Yeah I'm not gonna write more, you'll get the Idea. Edit: Get well soon!
@@charlesthoreson4162 I asked Chat GPT how Mike broke his finger. (really): "In the whimsical realm of Atomic Shrimp's RUclips channel, where science and eccentricity collide, a daring experiment was set to unfold. The RUclipsr, determined to bring the complexities of quantum mechanics to his audience, devised an ingenious plan involving homemade quantum entanglement. Transforming his backyard into a makeshift laboratory, Atomic Shrimp meticulously arranged mirrors, lasers, and custom entanglement chambers. Little did he know that the mischievous neighborhood cat, drawn to the spectacle, would pounce into the scene. In a frantic attempt to save his experiment from the feline interloper, Atomic Shrimp found his finger unwittingly entangled in the chaotic web of laser beams and toppling apparatus, resulting in a surprising and humorous broken finger. As Atomic Shrimp nursed his unexpected injury, he transformed the mishap into a quirky lesson on the unpredictable nature of scientific exploration. Through laughter and eccentricity, he shared the tale of his quantum entanglement experiment-gone-awry, turning an ordinary mishap into another unforgettable chapter in the eccentric adventures of RUclips's most unconventional scientist."
Sounds yummy. Might start looking for stuff like that's. As I live in Dawlish. Lots of beers around me. Thanks again. Hope your finger gets better. Faster 😮
I remember Oz Clark once saying to James May having a stout with a full English Breakfast as it complements it and brings out the flavour of the breakfast more esp black pudding and the sausages. I thought what rubbish no he was right 😂.
Sounds really good! For another Christmas drink tip is Bundaberg Spiced Ginger Beer it's a Weihnacht / Christmas edition brewed by Karlsberg. It taste like liquid Christmas I have no other explanation for it.
In a parallel dimension, another Atomic Shrimp that didn't break his finger, would've possibly enjoyed this stout, along with those two other cans! He also may have had the tiniest of precision tools (much like your preferred can-opener), that was exactly fitted to circumvent that naughty little pull tab on the Stout 🤣 Surely that would then make him a slightly more extreme version of our Mr. Shrimp, but i suppose these are the types of things that set the various dimensions apart! Jokes aside, hope your finger heals properly and with haste!
Northern Monk the gimmicky beer company. I mean they did loads of Sunday dinner beers with Aunt Bessie and loads of sweet beers including choc ice beer and peanut butter jelly beer.
I hope your hand heals fast, get well soon! (I wonder if that phrase is reserved for viral/bacterial illnesses, or if it also suits to broken bones etc.)
It could be from times past as in Britain, water was dangerous to drink and everyone including children drank weak beer called ‘Small beer’ and there was also normal bee-‘strong beer’
I hope your finger heals quickly... but I must admit you gave my anxiety quite a workout every time you picked up that can, and the little drop caught on the lip kept threatening to splash out onto your tablecloth!
Mike, you may be interested in Cutlass by Powder Monkey. Similar beer brewed by Powder Monkey Brewery Gosport. They're in Priddy's hard near where you'd have entered the foreshore to gain access to burrow (rat) island in your video.
Oops, broken figers, very annoying. How many times will you catch them over the next few weeks, forgetting they injured. Damn you shrimp, making us wait for the next installment! 😊
Thanks for the interesting review Mike, that sounds like it would be very nice.. I bought a bottle of "Stone's green ginger wine infused with chocolate and orange" a couple days ago. I haven't opened it yet so i can't say what it's like, but it should be interesting... I hope your finger mends well.
I'm not a fan of this type of stout. There's the Saltaire triple chocolate that I can just about squeeze a half down, but after that it gets too heavy. As for the temperature thing, I've worked in and ran many pubs and bars. When we were forced to take on the extra cold well known stout I was dismayed. Even at normal temperature you can barely taste anything, but just a degree lower and it's utterly tasteless. If you don't like flavour in your beer then head for the cold stuff.
Let them drink cake
This is the ONLY way that statement could have been made weirder :D
Everyone liked that
Well, they do call beer 'liquid bread', so why not take it a step further even...😅
Very well done.😂
The cake is a lie.
You should’ve had beer flavoured cake to go with it! 😂

Nice review of beer, with great explanation of cellar temperature and why some of our beers are often served that way.
One of the beer channels I occasionally watch say "Guiness Extra cold is guiness for people who don't like guiness because you can't taste it"
My brother always says it's for people who like to be seen drinking Guinness but don't like the taste
I don't like the taste of Guinness. Perhaps I might like the ice cold stuff!

Weird stuff in a can, Aldi are selling Pasta and Curry sauces in drink style cans.

Many moons ago I had a beer named Bamburana, it was an imperial stout aged on Amburana wood. Basically tasted like a lightly sweetened Mexican Mocha 😋
I’ve got a load of this in the fridge right now - love it ❤
Hope your finger isn’t too painful Mike
Thanks for explaining that we don't drink beer warm. I think US sitcoms like the Simpsons have caused this myth to arise.
It's also a way for us Americans to view & describe you pond jumpers as weird. Simpsons simply carried the fallacy along
Sorry to see you are in the wars..... saying a prayer for a speedy healing, and minimal discomfort in the meantime. God bless. ❤😊
Americans started drinking ice cold beer when our beer had no flavor and it was just a fizzy alcohol delivery system.

I remember Oz Clark once saying to James May having a stout with a full English Breakfast as it complements it and brings out the flavour of the breakfast more esp black pudding and the sausages. I thought what rubbish no he was right 😂.
Thank you once again for another video 📹. Hope you feel better soon.
Sounds really good! For another Christmas drink tip is Bundaberg Spiced Ginger Beer it's a Weihnacht / Christmas edition brewed by Karlsberg. It taste like liquid Christmas I have no other explanation for it.
For one horrible moment, when you said 'stop and take the thumbnail', I thought you meant on your broken finger!
I always find beer tasting descriptions.....funny
In a parallel dimension, another Atomic Shrimp that didn't break his finger, would've possibly enjoyed this stout, along with those two other cans! He also may have had the tiniest of precision tools (much like your preferred can-opener), that was exactly fitted to circumvent that naughty little pull tab on the Stout 🤣
Surely that would then make him a slightly more extreme version of our Mr.
🎶 You're a fakey cake baker and I ain't got time for youuuuuuuu! 🎶
here's to a swift recovery for your poor broken bone!
Called beer in all languages but Swedish, where its called "Starköl" which means strong beer lol.
It could be from times past as in Britain, water was dangerous to drink and everyone including children drank weak beer called ‘Small beer’ and there was also normal bee-‘strong beer’
I have worked in a couple of old pubs where there has been a stream running through the cellar!
Finally! A beer for me!
I’m sorry you broke your finger. That can be extremely annoying, and of course painful. I hope you heal quickly!
Oh dang, I love me some craft stouts!
Next time, beer flavoured cake.
It's the easiest way to sell that rubbish!
Looks like the bone injuries are going around, fractured my elbow the other day too.
