    Better to add a K&N filter to the stock intake because it takes cold air Rammed into the front of the car. Although it sounds cool, you will lose some power because it’s now taking hot air in from the engine well and the engine is not tuned for the change in air flow.

    Pro tip: adding a short “cold” air intake on a civic r18 motor without a ecu retune with a hondata you will LOSE POWER. stock air intake with the r18 is the best. I’m not kidding that intake probably lost you power. Test it out.

      The DC Sports racing pipe / "header" definitely makes the SPEC-D catback exhaust obnoxiously loud. I did weld in a vibrant 2.5" resonator onto the catback exhaust, which made it better... but its still somewhat annoying...

    Very informative. Doesn't the short ram intake play a role in the heat temperature of the engine.
    Doesn't it make the engine hotter

    • @LevelUpMechanics
      @LevelUpMechanics  2 года назад +2

      Nope. It doesn't make the engine hotter at all. There are two main differences between short ram intakes and cold air intakes.
      1. The air entering a short ram intake comes from the engine bay (the air is warmer = less top end power) and air from a cold air intake usually comes from somewhere where the engine bay heat won't affect it (generally cooler air = more top end power).
      2. Transversally, a short ram intake will give you more power during the low-to-mid rpms because the air gets to the engine quicker (it doesn't have to travel as far)... and a cold air intake will rob you of low end power (because it takes a longer time for the air to travel to the engine), but will give you more power @ high rpms (because of all that nice cold air away from the engine bay)...
      Since my Civic just has the R18 (and the fact that it's my daily driver), I'm not looking to gain any crazy top-end power increases. I'd rather have a bit more fun with some low-end torque performance while I'm zipping to and from work 🤣.
      Plus, as an additional note, I live in Houston where it floods A LOT... and a cold air intake usually relocates the filter close to the ground by the driver front fender well area on the Civic... and that means if I drove through a big puddle by accident, I could potentially suck up some water and hydro-lock my engine... and I don't want to do that 🤣

    • @GrapeCityLive

      I hydrolocked before. I can’t handle my cold air intake, wish I had the dang oem intake. Will these short rams pass smog. I might spend the grand and buy the oem one

    • @LevelUpMechanics
      @LevelUpMechanics  2 года назад +1

      State inspection / smog laws vary depending on the state you live in. For example, I live in Texas and have 0 issues passing a state inspection since this intake doesn't cause any issues that would turn my check engine light on. On the other hand, if you live somewhere like California, you would need an aftermarket intake that is "CARB EXEMPT" in order to pass Inspection.
      I chose to go with this short ram intake specifically to avoid any potential hydrolock issues.
      If you have passed any prior state inspections with the cold air intake installed in the past, then you really shouldn't have any issues by swapping to a short ram intake.
      If in doubt, I would recommend installing an intake that is "CARB EXEMPT"... However, it may be hard to find a company that actually has an intake that is actually legal in all 50 states, as most companies don't want to spend the extra money for additional emissions testing and certification (which is why most companies will state that their intakes are for "off-road use only".
      I hope this info helps 😁

      As far as exhausts are concerned, I do like my Spec-D setup. However, some people find it to be much louder than other options out there.
      Yonaka has a good catback exhaust for the 8th Gen Non-Si Civic. It's a little pricier, but it does have a good deep tone to it. Just make sure you get a catback exhaust that is correct for your R18 civic body style (either a sedan or coupe), as the exhaust pipe lengths are not the same.

    Quick question: I have a 10' Civic but I installed an Injen air intake and I was wondering how was your MPG after installing one? Could you also tell me around how many miles you got on a full tank possibly? That would help a lot. Thanks.

    • @LevelUpMechanics
      @LevelUpMechanics  Год назад +1

      Hello 👋. When I first installed my intake, my MPG was pretty much the same as a stock setup, when driving conservatively (and I was getting around 325-350 miles per tank).
      However, my current fuel efficiency has definitely dropped a little due to all of the modifications I have been adding (a heavily modified exhaust, hondata flashpro tuning, heavier wheels, upgraded brakes, etc).
      There are some general maintenance items that you can replace / perform to help maximize fuel efficiency. New spark plugs, new primary o2 (AFR) sensor, proper tire pressures, clean / new fuel injectors, etc.
      There are A LOT of variables that affect fuel efficiency. I hope this info helps 😄

      The R18 engines between the 8th & 9th Gen Civics are similar but not identical (R18A1 vs R18Z1)... I do not think the 8th Gen short ram intake will mount correctly on a 9th gen civic.
      DC Sports does make a cold air intake for your 9th gen civic 😁. As long as your fender flares & splash shields are still intact (and you don't drive through deep water), it is definitely a good option! 👍

    Hey man I know I’m kinda late to this video but i recently installed this same exact exhaust on my 2007 civic lx sedan. It started ratting a few days ago and I’m aware that you mentioned that I would have to bend the heat Sheild. I’m mostly just not sure exactly where and how to bend it in that area you showed because I couldn’t see it well, so any help would be great thanks 👍

    • @LevelUpMechanics
      @LevelUpMechanics  Месяц назад +1

      The exhaust pipe can get close to a heat shield located in an area that is in front of the passenger rear tire area (underneath the vehicle).
      The good news is that the heat shield is flexible, and you can bend it out of the way with just your hands (be careful not to accidentally cut yourself on any sharp edges).
      I would recommend safely lifting up the rear end of the vehicle, then grab the exhaust piping (when cold) and gently rock the exhaust from side to side to visually see where it makes contract with the heat shield underneath.
      I hope this info helps! 😁👍

    • @LevelUpMechanics

      Honestly, on the R18 1.8L engine, they are all going to perform about the same.
      I'm pretty happy with the DC Sports Short Ram Intake, but I do like the fact that Takeda has an option that allows you to utilize the factory lower air box.
      I don't think you could go wrong with any of these options. I would recommend that you choose one that best suits your style 👍👍

    • @LevelUpMechanics
      @LevelUpMechanics  Год назад

      The DC Sports short ram intake is holding up really well 👍. I haven't had a single issue.
      The only criticisms I have towards the design of this intake is that the filter sits REALLY close to the battery and that there isn't a clean mounting solution for the MAF sensor wiring harness.
      I'm pretty much nitpicking at this point. All in all, I am happy with the intake. It sounds great, it works well, and I haven't had any performance issues 😁.

      This exhaust system replaces everything underneath the vehicle, but does not replace the catalytic converter (or the front exhaust pipe that goes underneath the engine).

    • @LevelUpMechanics
      @LevelUpMechanics  2 месяца назад +1

      The engine is receiving "unregistered" air from the intake (somewhere after the MAF sensor), causing the P0171 code.
      Another issue could also be that your MAF sensor is not oriented correctly (or may be installed "backwards").

    is the Spec D exhaust legal to drive?

    • @LevelUpMechanics
      @LevelUpMechanics  2 года назад

      Laws vary from state to state (in regards to "excessive noise"). However, as far as emissions are concerned, the Spec-D exhaust should be legal to drive.
      This exhaust is a cat-back exhaust, so it still utilizes the factory catalytic converter. So you should not experience any issues as far as exhaust emissions are concerned.
      For example, I live in Texas and it is perfectly legal for me to pass a state inspection with the exhaust.
