That little donkey was a burro. They are very sure-footed, people used to ride them on tours in the grand canyon in Arizona, up and down very treacherous trails on the side of a cliff. In 1862, a French expeditinary force landed at Veracruz and marched inland towards Mexico City. They had come to support the claim to the throne of the Austrian Archduke Maximilian, who was pretending to be the "Emperor of Mexico." En route, they were met in a city called Puebla by the Mexican Army, loyal to the country's legitimate leader, President Benito Juarez, and led by a dashing young general by the name of Jose Porfirio Diaz. On May 5, 1862, the Mexican Army said "¡No Pasaran!" and kicked the French back to Veracruz. It wasn't the end of the war, indeed it was just the beginning, but it did show the French and the world that the Mexican Army could hold its own and defeat any army in the world, and it cemented the legacy of Porfirio Diaz. About a decade later, Porfirio Diaz became first the elected president and then later the unelected dictator of Mexico. He reigned with an iron fist for 35 years. While he was in power in Mexico, he made the anniversary of the day he defeated the French at Puebla, May 5, a national holiday. When Diaz grew too old and feeble to rule, a power vacuum led to a civil war that lasted more than a decade. During this civil war, countless multitudes of Mexicans fled to the United States as war refugees, and with them they brought the celebration of "Cinco de Mayo" as one of their national holidays. Which is ironic, because, back in Mexico, when the civil war ended, the victorious Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) did everything it could to "de-Porfirioize" the country, including canceling May 5 as a national holiday. But the Mexicans who fled to the USA before the war ended and the PRI took over still celebrated it, and it's become an unofficial Mexican heritage celebration all across America today. But in Mexico today, it passes every year unnoticed. As the ones who Porfirio defeated at Puebla would say, _cest la vie._

A mule is the offspring of a male donkey and a female horse. They are more patient, hardier, and longer-lived than horses, and considered less stubborn and more intelligent than donkeys. False eyelashes were invented in the first decades of the 20th century. Shirley MacLaine wearing them is an anachronism, but really it was just done to accentuate her eyes on film.

No, Clint Eastwood did appear in at least one bad movie: Paint Your Wagon (1969), which also starred Lee Marvin. It was a *musical* Western. And it was beyond bad - it was absolutely horrible.
If they'd edited about 30 minutes of length out of it, it would have been good, or at least alright. The biggest thing was that it was just too long. The first half was hilarious. The second half, not so much.
@@magnificenthonky - I must disagree. Even if I did not hate all musicals (as I do), neither Clint nor Lee could sing for $#!+. It was some of the worst singing I've ever heard. Yeah, I vaguely recall some funny bits, but they were drowned and washed away from memory by the godawful singing.
Dawn, if you want to see a bridge blown up while a train's crossing it, watch Bridge On The River Kwai. As a bonus, Alec Guinness stars in it (the old Obi-Wan-Kenobi in Star Wars: A New Hope).
Clint Easrwood still owns the original poncho from the "Dollar Series". He never let it be cleaned between films and it's never been laundered since then.
The plant is indeed a cactus, just on a great stump. It's a prickly pear (Opuntia) which is quite common througout the western hemisphere from Argentina all the way to Canada. If you can peel off the thorns (and glochids, especially) it's pretty good eating.
Most the times Hollywood never bothers to check on things like false eyelashes and stuff. Pretty sure though that they wanted everyone to believe those were the characters real eyelashes. "They won't be able to tell" is what they're thinking, but they didn't take into account a brilliant and observant lady as yourself Darlin! You were also right on the money about her not being a Nun almost from the beginning!
The job of a chandler is almost as nasty as they come. You have to get bulk tallow from the butcher or stockyard in order to render it down to the material needed for dipping the wicks.
Hat makers fared even worse. To make felt for the hats (in that era) they used a mercury solution which can pass through human skin and/or be inhales from the fumes. This led to the health and mental issues which is the origin of the phrase "mad as a hatter".
Dang it. You beat me. I wanted to explain this to her. No, it's not "cool." It's not pouring nice clean wax and perfume into little jars. Maybe you'd like dying fabrics the way they did in the Middle Ages, Dawn. That's really cool.
Dawn Marie. You need to really laugh with Clint Eastwood. Here are some examples to watch. EVERY WHICH WAY BUT LOOSE. The sequel, ANY WHICH WAY YOU CAN, and BRONCO BILLY. I think these comedies are up you alley. Then, there is the Dirty Harry series. Don't forget to add THE GAUNTLET, and TIGHT ROPE into the mix. Lastly, Clint Eastwood starred in a television western series called RAWHIDE for seven years before embarking on his movie career. His character's name was Rowdy Yates. Bet you love that name.
Hello, check out a movie called, 1492: Conquest of Paradise. Adventure/Drama (1992). It stars Gérard Depardieu, Siqourney Weaver, Armante Assante. It portrays a version of the travels to the New World by the Italian explorer Christopher Columbus and the effect this had on indigenous peoples. Directed by Ridley Scott.
❤❤❤ Two ponchos for Sister Marie. (Sounds better than Sister Dawn) Okay, Dawn, that's a good call about Sarah and her eyelashes not being a Nun. Sarah did tell Hogan he was as stubborn as her mule. Donkeys are stronger by weight than horses or mules. There are bunches of westerns that give you that Mexican scenery. MAJOR DUNDEE and GUNS FOR SAN SEBASTIÁN are a couple. Clint in a non serious WWII movie? KELLY'S HEROES. He has several funny non comedies. Okay, they might actually be listed as comedies, but Clint isn't the comedian. Best since Kelly Mac? Just sayin'.
The Trouble With Harry, Shirley MacLaine's first film, with John Forsythe and Edmund Gwenn (original Miracle on 34th St's Kris Kringle), directed by Alfred Hitchcock, is a delightful weird funny rom-com as only Hitchcock could do it.
Shirley MacLaine really outplayed Clint Eastwood. There is even a RUclips video where it's told that Clint Eastwood really was intimidated by Shirley MacLaine! By the way the second mule was Clint Eastwood! 😂 You really should watch Shirley's introducing movie Hitchcock's "The Trouble with Harry"!
Great reaction as always. Strongly recommend "My Name Is Nobody", which is a comedy Spaghetti Western film (story development by Sergio Leone and music by Ennio Morricone). Very entertaining film with Terence Hill and Henry Fonda.

Mules are pretty amazing.
They live longer than both horses and donkeys, they're more durable and can work harder than horses, require less food than horses of the same size, and are more aware of danger.
The odd number of chromosomes is why most mules are sterile. Odd numbers have a hard time splitting into viable cells when they divide.

The plant is indeed a cactus, just on a great stump. It's a prickly pear (Opuntia) which is quite common througout the western hemisphere from Argentina all the way to Canada. If you can peel off the thorns (and glochids, especially) it's pretty good eating.
My back yard is full of them. We pick the fruit and eat it.
_Thunderbolt & Lightfoot_ (1974)!
_The Gauntlet_ (1977)!! !
_Dirty Harry_ (forever)!
Great Flick. Great nod to the grail.
The lady with No Name!
Shirley Maclaine is Warren Beatty's sister. John Wayne also did a western story that included a nun "Rooster Cogburn" .
😮 I never knew that!!
@@StephenDouthart-f8r There was no nun in Rooster Cogburn. She was a minister's daughter.
In Rooster Colburn she was a missionary not a nun, but yeah a very good movie 👌
You really should watch Shirley's introducing movie Hitchcock's "The Trouble with Harry"!
Dawn's reactions are fun, but her reactions to westerns are the best.
Great reaction as always. Strongly recommend "My Name Is Nobody", which is a comedy Spaghetti Western film (story development by Sergio Leone and music by Ennio Morricone). Very entertaining film with Terence Hill and Henry Fonda.
What a great movie!
More clint is always good.
