Thomas always has such great vocal control, while allowing himself to add that little bit of extra live passion in subtle ways with his vocal styling. It's not *so* squeaky clean that you feel like it's doctored, so it's really impressive. Love this band. So happy to have superb new music by them. They NEVER disappoint!

@@ChampionBuddhaBoy He's not using auto tune actually, he is just that precise with his tones.
He might not have super impressive vocal abilities, but he hits all the notes so perfectly well it sounds like it's auto tuned. That's how impressive this guy is.

@@sams8674 He likes to play with effects on his voice on many songs.... He has been doing that for at least the last 10 years. It's more of a creative/fun thing than a way to hide or fake his voice (their ''Un peu menteur'' cover on Spotify show that really well I think). He's a skilled natural singer, as shown on all the acoustic performance of their songs that you can find on RUclips. And on this specific performance, if he's using any effects, it's really subtle.
Currently going down a Phoenix rabbit hole on Spotify because of this performance. This was class 🤩

@@DancakePancake Thanks! I've been familiar with the bigs tunes for a few years (1901, Lisztomania etc) and liked them but never dived into full albums, but hearing this made me take a closer look 😁
One of my favourite bands since 2004. Every few years I rediscover them through their latest single/album. Always great!

@@evedotcom But this would be the obvious thing. Him behind the drumkit and letting fans guess seems much more like Phoenix and Ezra. Also Ezra certainly knows about moments from pop music history like Dave Grohl drumming for Tom Petty on Letterman (?) … so I bet it is actually him.

Phoenix is such a strange band. They’re from France and don’t sing even one song in French or have any French Lyrics. Why not? In fact I’d like to hear them do a whole album in French. They’re French after all, not English!
Good observation, I would also love to listen to an album of theirs wholly in French. I think they sing in English because they consider it the language of popular music, same way as Italian is the language of opera. That's also why Thomas considers vocals more of a rhythm box than a narrator, as he's also a drummer. I'm pretty sure I read it somewhere, I will look it up!
@@polloyopa Well, I’m a Francophile so I don’t like someone disregarding French and the the French Culture like that.
The Beatles even had a song with some French words and it made it sound sophisticated. French used to be the language of Diplomacy but I guess that’s over now.
@@dynjarren8355 I'm with you on that, I also love French culture and it's part of the reason I like Phoenix so much. I think it's more of a stylistic choice. I live in Mexico and most indie bands sing in English. But Phoenix are definitely very French, and they do sing in French sometimes, mostly in "Ti Amo". Check out "Goodbye Soleil", par exemple.
By the way. The guitar arregment kinda noisy reminds me to James Chance and The Contortions’s Contort Yourself
