  • In this video i will be testing a theory that you can clean records with wood glue.
apparently its the hot thing to do one the internet, but does it really work? i have had mixed opinions on how well it works. so lets put it to the test.

***** Good to know. You could always test the glue for pH using litmus paper, but I'd guess that it's not very acidic, perhaps even on the basic side. Also, the amount of time that the glue is in contact with the vinyl may also keep the record safe from any damage.

Hey Viperfrank I learned about this "trick" for cleaning records from a DJ who worked at 100 watt radio station back on the 1960's he said they use to do a lot of remote broadcasts back then and as a result the records would get really dirty really fast and sound like crap. He said the owner of the station had this really big old house and on the weekends he would have parties and in exchange for all the food, beer, and part favors you ever wished to sample you had to smear glue on records for 6 or 8 hours and that he had a drying room and on Monday or Tuesday he would haul all these glue covered records back to the station and then everybody at the station would spend a day or so pealing the glue off the records and refile them back into the record library. I figured after listen him tell me about this weird and wild record restoring trick I had to try it and was dumbfounded that it works. I have glue cleaned my entire collection it only took two gallons of glue but I can't believe how good some of those old albums sound

@REBELLIONETTE Ive read under similar vids that its not a good idea to use cheap glue. Many have said Titebond is the best, and someone else recommends Titebond ll instead saying it dries better. I am going to try Titebond lll since that is the only type I can find of this brand here in Toronto. I tried using some cheap stuff yesterday and the resuly was terrible, but maybe I didnt wait long enough. It looked totally dry, except for one little aerae

Its much easier to let the record turn on a turntable when putting the glue on. It's also easier to be careful how close to the edge, and to the label you go with it that way. Just have to be normally concentrated and steady on the hand, never had problem with that. Also using a good glue, you don't need to have so much glue on, it won't break up in pieces.

  • @myohmydoyouwannasaygoodbye

I also tried this method on a worthless LP. It looks spectacular and seems to be perfect cleaning method. In fact, it helped only a bit for my vinyl as most of the clicks & pops stayed on the record where they were.
So I tried with another record and another cleaning style: just using tap water + soap and... it made better cleaning than wood/vicol glue. What's funny, I destroyed label more using glue (it dropped on the label accidentally) than using just water (no visible destroy).
The glue trick is just spectaluar, looks nice and as "a kind of magic", but it doesn't help as much as other cleaning techniques, IMO.

I'm copying a message I posted on another video like this. Hope my advice will help.
My advice after 8 records cleaned:
    -try on junk first
-wash your records before the glue cleaning. (i mixed water and alcohol around 50/50 but you can do like you want)
-don't put any glue on the sticker
-if you get a drop where you don't want any, instead of trying to wipe it off just make a bigger drop and try to make it join the rest of the glue to peel in one piece.
-be sure that the edges are really thick on both sides (inside and out). If the edges are too thin they won't come with the rest of the glue disk and you'll have to scratch it (which is not a real problem if it's on the dead wax). Also it will become a powder worst than dust that you can't clean with water unless you want to kill your record.
-don't put water on your record EVER after doing this method. If you missed a little drop of glue somewhere and water gets on it, it will spread and you will never be able to clean it. (that was my first try and the record is D.E.A.D).
-DON'T try to stick something to one edge to peel it off easier after. It's not a good idea because the glue under the "something" will take forever to dry.
-Don't be cheap on glue. Do like me buy 2.5kg so you won't care to use more than enough.
-Heat up a little the dry glue with a hair dryer (not too hot!!!). If it's just a little warm it will come off easier.
-don't put glue too close from the edge because if surface tension is broken you may have glue going UNDER your recordand that's really really bad.
Anyway it's working perfectly if you do it right. Even the 50 years old Edith Piaf record of my grandmother sound brand new (really like a new).

You wrote all that nonsense when you mentioned one item necessary but not the other really. During the hey day of vinyl when it was the supreme medium for listening. I am old enough to remember. These guys promoting this method are all youngsters. Anyway, done by professionals as well as the average record buyer. A micro brush pad and 91% isopropyl alcohol was all that was needed. Wood glue contains traces of chemicals that deteriorates the high frequency undulations in the grooves of vinyl records. Which is disagreeable when played back on state of the art audio systems. The upper frequency overtones of many musical instruments are marred. If people during this era saw a person doing this they would think they just got out of the nuthouse.

Interesting. I used to use a product here in Canada called: LAST. I forget now if there were 2 or 3 compounds you had to apply in separate stages. 1: deep cleaned, 2: conditioned, 3: protected for 200 plays. (Maybe one of them was for the stylus. LAST disappeared in the 80's when so many people got rid of their vinyl and went to CD's. Someone told me it's available again but I haven't checked.

I have dabbled with the wood glue method myself. Use an old turntable and set it on 33 rpm and start at the centre of the record with the glue and gradually work your way to the edge. It's important to not get it too thin because it's a bear to get off when you get to pealing it off. A plastic laminated card is great for spreading the glue around (as the record rotates on the turntable).
In the US, a brand of glue that is popular for "cleaning" records is Titebond II. Buy a gallon jug and it will last a good while!
Downsides to cleaning this way is the long time to cure the glue and of course, the minute chance it won't peel off correctly. There is a product now called "winyl" (google / YT it) that uses a similar technique as wood glue. Smear it on and peel it off when it's dry.

  • @misterkrotos
    @misterkrotos Год назад

I have been doing this for years, get an old record player from a boot fare and use that when spreading the glue and use your finger to push the glue in the grooves. You only need to use about 1/2 the glue you have been using. You only need to cover it in a very thin layer :) Also PVA glue works the best!

It may sound risky, but applying the glue while the record is spinning on the turntable and using a credit card to spread it literally takes 30 seconds to completely finish and works perfectly. It coats much much more evenly than shown in this video. Also, you don't need a tab, and I highly recommend Titebond II or III, it will always come off in one piece.

Thank ou for your your post. But I have to say, mate, you also gave us the proof that most people are doing it wrong. First, it is a good idea to clean (or rather pre-clean) your LP before you use the wood glue method. Use microfiber damped in a alcohol solution and follow the grooves scrubbing lightly, but getting it wet. Let it dry, takes a few seconds. You should be using an old (beat up but spinning) turntable to apply the glue while the record is slowly spinning. Make a spiral with no more than 0.4oz (12ml) of Titebond II (it peels off perfectly). I use a seringe to measure and apply the proper quantity. I use a straight-edged spatula to spread it SOFTLY and cover the whole micro-groove. Applying a non-linear angle I can get some glue to go towards the center or towards the edge. Try to leave a bit of a bump on both ends, to avoid specs of glue to stay on the record. This amount of glue will dry off in an hour or less per side, especially when using a fan. Then, on the outmost extremity, just scratch-off a bit of the glue, it will whiten and lift, and you can start peeling off from there. I never had glue that didn't come off with Titebond II. Try to remove in a circular motion, a bit like you applied it in spiral. This will give a single piece of dried-off glue. I can do a few per day. I don't have the intention of doing this on ALL my records, but the ones that needed it showed dramatic improvement. I can say it is a way to make any LP sound as good as it can, since it will not remove "pops" from scratches. I should post a video.

Wow, I will never be able to figure out why you kids want to go back to vinyl!!! I grew up with it and totally don't miss it. Back around 1999, I was moving and I remember thinking, "I'm not taking these" and I left 3 big boxes of lps and 12" singles behind. And you know what? I'd probably doubled my vinyl collection in the previous 10 years, because in the 90s, if you liked an album, but not enough to pay 15 to 20 bucks for the CD, you could usually scout a pretty decent copy in a used record store for 99 cents! But then, in 1999, Napster appeared, and even if you knew Napster itself couldn't last, you finally understood what the digital revolution was all about and that was it for vinyl. From what I understand, this vinyl craze is more than just a hipster fad. Every college kid today has a turntable. Who knew?

I bought it second hand so my guess is the previous owner must have abused it with too much weight on his needle or something. Although I did not let it dry for two days, maybe half a day at most. Might do it again :-)

Don't do this on a flat level. Put it on top of an ofl platter, or even a regular plate, where the sides hang over. You can still use cloth just not on a flat surface.
Always wait 24 hours to pull the glue off. Sometimes it looks dry and it's not.
You don't need to brute force it off once dry. Tearing at the tab or quickly yanking the glue off is bad form. Pick the record up and just slowly pull at it the tab with clean hands. DON'T PUT IT BACK IN THE SAME RECORD SLEEVE. Use a fresh one.

  • @crunchyfrog555
    @crunchyfrog555 9 лет назад +4

The only thing I would caution against here is that vinyl is INCREDIBLY sensitive to chemicals. They can either leave small residue (which isn't of much relevance here), or disrupt the chemical make-up of the plastic.
And as you're using PVA (a poly-vinyl adhesive where solvents hold the vinyl in a fluid state) those solvents WILL affect the record over time.
All in all it's a great rescue attempt for records that are fucked, but long term, it's a big NO NO.

Daniel Linger yeah very good advice ,
warm soapy water + a good clean paint brush couldnt do the job any easier/better/cheaper without the risk of damage.
also heres a very simple way of keeping the labels dry :
      www.cater4you.co.uk/acatalog/10oz-round-take-away-container-l.jp
find a couple of those^ lids as wide as the label.
thread a wood screw by hand through the center of boths lids ,through the outer side of the first one and inner side of second,
unscrew the second lid and pass the screw through the hole in record,
rescrew the second lid to sandwich the label between the both lids,
shouldnt need to be too tight cos they form a decent seal.

i liked your test of the strength of the wood glue but to be honest the perceived strength of the wood glue is dependent on loads of things such as how fast it dries, the type of wood, the type of joint, and the direction of force applied to the joint. However more than that, the wood glue is strong with wood because it's absorbed by the wood and joins the two pieces together like that, but with pretty much anything else that isn't fibrous like wood is it just dries as a plastic layer on top which is peeled off, so there was no real danger of it sticking to the record in the first place

I'd be a bit dubious of wood glue on vinyl. One day a bit of residue might just get stuck in the grooves for starters and although it appears to work, over time chemicals in the glue might degrade the vinyl. Probably the safest DIY record cleaner is distilled water (3 parts) and isopropyl alcohol (1 part) with NO washing up liquid or detergent of any kind, which can actually degrade the vinyl surface quite quickly. Ideally buy a proprietary brand. Don't rub them dry - you're pushing contaminated fluid into the grooves. Instead, use a soft goat's hair brush to agitate the fluid both clockwise & anti-clockwise, and put them on a clean drying rack that you'd use for drying plates. Standing the records upright whilst drying doesn't attract dust - and isopropyl alcohol evaporates leaving the record dry after about 40-60 minutes. Oh, and try not to get pubes on your vinyl!! Nice video! Loved it!

Going to have to try this on some of my double copies that aren't in good condition. I used to build furniture and cabinets for years to make a living, I think trying different wood glues might be worth testing. Some might turn out to be better than other types of glue, meaning some might get into tighter groves on the vinyl plate better than others depending on thickness of the glue.

  • @aaronliddell5564

I think your lucky he tab came off because if it was to bond it would have to bond to something else not the glue, like perhaps the album. But this is freaking awesome man!!! Wood glue literally fuses the wood cells together. It forms a bond stronger than the wood itself. So 2 pieces of wood should break not at the glue joint but somewhere around it the wood will actually tear apart.
I suspect the glue can not really bond to something as smooth as vinyl.

No need to wait days, or to apply too thick. Just be sure to use the Tite Bond II brand, it really is the best suited for record cleaning. (I get about ten to fifteen records done from a small bottle.) then run a good fan over it for about half an hour, and as soon as the glue looks clear, you're good to go. Note that the glue removal will cause static, that can cause pops, a dryer sheet lightly touching the record for a minute or so can take care of that. Also, put the paper tab under the record, not on top, or it will just rip.

He wasn't waiting. I'm sure he wasn't itching to rip the glue off an old record he has a duplicate of enough for the interim of a few days to make any difference. Just went about as normal. And, he did want to be sure it was dry so that he wouldn't ruin it merely because he hadn't let it dry properly. It was a decision to avoid human error in trying something you aren't sure is the internet pulling your leg.

+emurphy66 I was very skeptical too, but I found it really works beautifully. I actually believe it's better not to wait too long for the glue to dry. Reason being, the more it dries, the more hard, and brittle it becomes. Pulling it off while it is still somewhat pliable prevents it from leaving tiny flakes of hardened glue in the grooves. As soon as it becomes clear, it's ready. I've done it lots of times, and never had any problems.

nice tutorial never seen this idear but i personally use wd40 sprayed onto a kitchen towel then gentlty wipe it round the grooves but do not come in contact with the label then with another dry kitchen towel wipe it over the grooves to pick up the access oil then play your record from start to finish you will see a build up of grime and dirt on your needle wipe the needle if becomes to clogged and just start aliitle back from where you picked the needle up. until it plays to the very end again wipe the dirt off the needle then play the record again from start and you will notice a much sharper crisper sound also gives a nice shine to your vinyl !!!! for best results play the record twice over to pick up the secondary grime . maybe you could try it for yourself frank with an old record and do a vid on it . it takes much less time then the glue method and very cheap process !!!

Kitchen towels can be quite abrasive! I discovered this once when I used a dampened towel to quickly remove some bird droppings of my car and it put micro scratches all over the paintwork which I had to polish out! Just be careful, paper products aren't as "soft" as you think.

    • @andrewhaines3259

No you can't. The groove profile is reversed on the glue so instead of troughs you have peaks. If you cast a disc from the glue profile that would work, (if the glue didn't disintegrate that is).

It should be noted that this will only work with PVA based wood glue. This is the most common type anyway, but do NOT use wood glue called "Cascamite" or any non-PVA glues as you will not get it off!
PVA craft glue is the same thing too so if you can buy that cheaper then just use that. I know you can get it in much bigger bottles than the one he uses here, and it really isn't that expensive, you can get 5 litres from Screwfix for £9.99

  • @jeffpuha8187
    @jeffpuha8187 8 лет назад

This process may, indeed, work but there are two serious problems with it. Firstly, it would take a huge amount of time to do even a relatively small collection of LP's. Secondly, the cost of the wood glue would be very high if you used it on even 100 records.
I think a wash with an alcohol-based solution is much more effective and a lot cheaper, whether done manually or with a record cleaning machine. I've been cleaning records that way for years and have had no issues.
Some people say you shouldn't use alcohol on your records because it leeches the oil out of the vinyl, but I don't believe that. The amount of time the alcohol is in contact with the vinyl surface is very minimal-only 1-2 minutes. I seriously doubt the alcohol would have time to dry out the vinyl.
One thing I would urge all of you folks to do is to treat your records with LAST Record Preservative after you clean them. It truly does prevent groove damage for a couple of hundred plays. It also makes the records sound better across the whole frequency range. I've used it for almost 30 years and it's a wonderful product. The Library of Congress and Smithsonian Institute also use it for their record collections.

Wood glue was the only thing that worked for some of my vinyls. If I’m going to digitally capture a vinyl for archival purposes, I wood glue it. Alcohol sprays and wiping didn’t do anything for some of my vinyl. I just bought a big bottle of i glue. Just have to be super careful applying it and removing it. I found a wood glue that is less brittle. You can also use less brittle glues to remove previous failed gluing attempts. Also, if you’re going to place a tab, let it dry for more than a day. Maybe a day and a half to two days. The glue might not be fully dried under the tab even though the rest of it is. If you play the vinyl with a moist glue residue you will get glue on the stylus. And that my friends is not good.

Then rinse them with a spray bottle full of distilled water. Then using a spin clean with just filled water. Then ultrasonic. Do I need to rinse the records after the ultrasonic cleaning? I have seen some videos where they do. But then you have to use distilled water. Is this overkill? Any suggestions? I have a lot of records to clean. About 1,000.

I also find it works great.... BUT, buy glue by the gallon (much cheaper) and no need to spread such a thick layer.
Also, 2 DAYS to DRY??? (and yes, forget the tab idea). Mine has always dried beautifully overnight or in 3-4 hours with a fan. Granted I'm in dry inland California rather than a cool humid location. Still, if one does not want to invest in some sort of cleaning apparatus I find it's a really effective way to clean.
