- Losi Rock Rey upgrades. This is a video of me upgrading the Losi Rock Rey. I put a new motor in the Losi Rock Rey tune the ESC and lock up the center & front diff's, I also put a new servo in this truck. My hope with these upgrades to the Losi Rock Rey is to make it better at crawling on the rocks while keeping most of the rock racer style. Thank you everyone for watching.

I work on full size vehicles for a living, so doing a job like that on these r/c vehicles is a treat for me. 😂
Gary, you are a great RC guy I think it's great how u explain everything thanks man ..
Thank you very much
Wow dude. That is a lot of work. Looks like I'm going with yeti
Yup not easy to work on at all
Thanks for the tutorial nice work!
Hats off to you my friend!!! That's some serious work right there. Even just keeping all the hardware, parts, and steps straight. Hope it crawls AWESOME. Know you wouldn't want to tear that sucker down again...Lol.💪💪😵😵😵😲😲🙋👍👍👊
Yeah I really hope it's just done now lol. Thanks brother
Just like a yeti.pain in the but.nice vid
I agree
Just got a rock rey an definitely at least need thicker oil in the center when i punch it the left front tire gets all the power an sends me off turning how did u like having it locked
Hi,
Thanks for the video, does the sand get easily inside the motor and stops it?
Thanks
Not that I know of
I'll be digging in to the center diff in a couple days. I like this kind of work, but that body and cage removal adds so much overhead to the job.
Yes it does, I'll tell you right now I like working on Rc's but not this one lol
Hi Gary,,, my diff clicking probz! When i lift the front and roll it on back wheels it dont like it, when i hold the back wheels off the ground and roll it feels fine!? Any idea which diff i am having probs with,, as i thought it my centre, but as i say when i hold the front wheels off the ground and roll it bites up in the rear!? If you could hazard a guess i would be very thankful man!?;, thanks again bud for all your stuff!
Turn it up side down and hold one of the front tires and spin the other or give it a little power if your diff clicks or you hear a crunching sound it's your front if the front is fine it would have to be the center. Hope that helps
KillerOffRoadHobbyz ,, Thanks a bunch man,, starting to get used to diffs,, was always a dirt bike guy,,and have proper understanding what diffs do,, but first gonna take out my 1/10 now with the 2 new 5500Mah 3s batt packs i just got!! Happy happy happy,, gonna be fun!! Thanks again Gary,,, a 1 word answer on this one, i know you are bogged down man! Arrma Senton or Traxxas Slash top shelf model?? 😊
THANKYOU Gary 😊 can tell my front diff is the offender,, crunch, twang,, thankyou very much as was not looking forward to wrnching all 3 diffs down and up again,,, sure this will help others that read it,, as i guess its pretty common!! You sir! Are a star,, thanks for helping!!
Senton hands down
Any time my friend
i wonder could you help me out , im in a bit of a mess, i was doing this same thing as you on a losi raptor rey to put some heavy diff oil in the centre diff , like you i got all the way to having the diff removed but when i tried to remove the grub screw in the back of the drive shaft to separate the diff from the diff housing the allen head wrench started slipping in the grub screw, i know i could be royally shafted now but im sure others have been in this position, im not above buying new parts but obviously if i can possibly avoid it i will , i have tried heating the grub screw with a soldering iron but there is virtually no purchase on the allen wrench, i could just put it all back together and it would be same as it was before but it has FAR too much drive to front wheels and is annoyingly tippy so more power to back wheels should make the back end slide out better.
if i have to get new parts then it is what it is but which parts would i need to get , would i need the drive shaft as well ?
as i said its a mess !
Sounds like your going to have to drill it out. I have had that happen to me many times and just had to drill it out and buy new parts. QC is a problem with most Rc companies these days, missing parts, loose screws or over tightened, gear mesh off, esc tape coming loose first bash the list goes on
@@killeroffroadhobbyz
i was thinking that myself , i have only had the car for two months and have contacted the shop, explaining that the car was uncontrollable from the off , pulling severely to the left on acceleration , it could of caused a real problem if it had hit a child or car wheel , even a curb, so it was either send it back or add thicker oil to centre diff , as i have a lot of experience in these models i decided to strip it down and add thick oil to diff only to find that the grub screw was seized through too much thread lock on grub screw, the shop have said to send it to them, so i will today .
i feel these cars are not toys and sometimes require us to work on them, that should be taken into account when putting these cars together, i understand that threadlock has to be applied but should be done in a professional manner, not just loaded in , in a flippant manor.
many thanks for your reply
It's so much easier working on this thing the second time..and so on. The more you work on it the less time it takes, at least for me. I love tinkering with my RC's
Me to, taking these apart is fun for me
Very true i have owned about 5 rock reys.. i have two of them rite now
& i have one in pieces lol
Love the baja & rock rey platform
Holy shit bro that was a lot of work, now you have worried about Axial yeti I have to build lol
Yeti is way easier to work on I built the XL kit and it was easy, a crappy rig lol but easy
KillerOffRoadHobbyz good to hear, but I hope the non xl isn't crappy lol.
Seems like using silly putty would have been a better idea than epoxy that can not be removed. At least silly putty is firm but will give a little when it's bound up. Epoxy seems like a easy way to continually break parts when bound up. Good luck with that I see breakage in your future. Better get used to tearing that thing apart. I'm sure you'll get faster at it.
You might be right, I guess we will soon find out
I hope it works out for you, that thing looks like a nightmare to maintain, I like to use plain old putty for diffs that way you can undo it if you want! How many tickets sold!
68 last time I looked
what size and tip bits are required to unscrew the losi?
Losi is standard
Hi, How did you attach the spare wheel to back ?
Zip ties
Thank you.
I'm really confused regarding your motor install. Exactly what motor did you install? I have had three motors in my Rock Rey aside from the stock one, and all of them used stock mounting holse with the stock pinion.
It's from hobbyking, 3674 3300kv 4pole
@@killeroffroadhobbyz
Ah. Had a similar experience with one of their trackstar 3665 3190 kv motors in another rig. Holes were off.
If you ever want to really get it to run smooth, but keep the electronics somewhat budget friendly all things considered, do what I did. TP Power 3635 6D in a sensored version and a Hobbywing Quicrun 10BL120 esc. Will run smooth as silk when crawling about, but it also has the ability to run like a raped ape - and you will be about 50 grams lighter.
Is it possible to get an unlock rear diff?
I don't think so
If you still have the truck, ditch that system, if your just crawling, and go with a Castle Slate/Copperhead, 4s system.
Much smoother...
It's JX servo I've heard you call them XJ like five different times lmao, I use those servos too I love them.
I wouldn't lock that front diff.....
It's to late now
Y not
@@Matts_ahclimbing Cause its gonna drive horribly. Now if you're doing what gary was doing and just using it as a crawler you will be good. But if you plan on doing anything other than crawling I don't think it would perform well.
@@cwatson42785 I locked the diffs in an emaxx trying to do the same thing... wouldn't steer. Locked rear and center with a heavy weight oil in front will probably work best. I know this is kinda old.
@@americanfather3090 Hey thanks for the tip! I actually got rid of my losi rock rey. Locked rear diff didn't really suit my driving style.
They don't make it easy to work on..that's why I like arrma, they think of maintenance and make things easy to access 👍👍👍👍👊👊
Hell yeah
Arrma doesn't make a rig like this, if they made a solid rear axle desert buggy style like this I bet you it would be just as much of a pain, that's how the style of these rigs are the no body clips and roll cage and cool body come with a price lol your sanity when working on it.
Looking good bro! I recommend gearing the pinion down to a 10t since you went up on kv. Let me know how you like the motor!
Hey man I want to give you a shout out man I watched your upgrade video used the motor. Thanks so much for all the info in your videos.
KillerOffRoadHobbyz
Thx for watching my friend! I'm a fan of your channel bro! Folks who are genuinely trying to help others are few and far my friend. Keep up the great work!
Thank you very much I will and you do the same
It's more efficient for a higher kv motor to run higher gearing you know
josh thumperluck not true at all.. go check out John Holmes with Holmes Hobby. He makes motors, esc’s, and servos. The most efficient motor is a 2700kv and running it at higher voltages make it out perform high kv motors and stay cool. High kv motors create heat and that is th number one enemy of electronics my friend. John can do the math for you and explain it better than I can. I took his class at this year’s USTE event. Very smart guy!
Man say me please what do you think about this truck....i wanna buy one of this but i still didnt understand if this truck pretty good....Im scary about such plastic parts. Wha u can say about this car?its good truck for his money or maybe better take some else.
I like this truck but not for bashing it's a pretty ok trail rig and the scale look is amazing. I am much happier with it now after my upgrades. It really depends on what your looking to do with it. If you want a trail rig and light bashing it's good to go but if you looking for a big air basher this is not the truck for you. hope that helps. Thanks
thank you for answer ! im looking some new truck for sand beach ride, for crazy bashing i have TTR Mt4G5...I just wanna some truck like buggy and i have two choise beetwen TTR Bushmaster and Losi Rock Rey!
In that case the Rock Rey will do you much better then the Bushmaster
KillerOffRoadHobbyz Thank you for answear.
Gosh, i have this car, you need what you did here, and then find every aluminum part for the front, everything, diff, shock tower, sus arms, turnbuckles, servo steering set. Then it will be impossible to break
How do you mount a spare wheel?
I did it with zip ties
@@killeroffroadhobbyz Thanks.
Seems worse than my exo terra. That thing looked great and was pretty tough. But I felt wrenching on it was a waste of time Sold it and actually made money on it though
Very nice it's not everyday you can say that
5 hours for the diff thats nothing:-):-):-)
LOL that's 5 hours of my life I can never have back lol
I'm curious of the locations that you bash? I recognize the skate park and Girvan in your intro, where else do you play? I'm always looking for new places in this area.
Ughh but how did you do the diff lock 😩
Steel stick in center diff and steel stick in front diff
@@killeroffroadhobbyz do I have to take out the internals ? Or put it over the internals
@@mandosgarage No just put it in with the gears and give it time to set up
twin hammers diff lockers
They work on this rig?
KillerOffRoadHobbyz yes
KillerOffRoadHobbyz it's what everyone e else is using
Sweet thanks bro
Just wanted to confirm that the Hobbywing Program Card (30501003) is the one that you used for programing the stock ESC Link: www.hobbywingdirect.com/products/led-pc2c?variant=172030922
Yup thats the one. That will also program Arrma BLX esc's
KillerOffRoadHobbyz , I guess since I have your attention I’ll pick your brain a little bit. I have a new RTR RR and I’m curious since it has been a while would you still recommend these modifications that you did in this video? More specifically, would you still recommend this motor swap and locking the front differential? I definitely need to slow the RR down because of the type of terrain that I run on!
Screw working on that thing, jeeze
LOL
Your steering is gonna be really bad now
On high traction but in the dirt it's not too bad
Yea... Let the animal out now...
I will thanks Sandra
How is that hard to work on? 😂😂😂
