And Jillian could do it all. She was a good comedian she could sing she could dance and she had a very likable personality. It is a disgrace that with all her talent and likability they could not find a series or any vehicle in which to make her the star that she deserves to be
She did 49 episodes of "It's a Living." That was fairly successful, but in an ensemble cast. I agree, she could've broken out to do more.
I remember this show but never watched it. But I do remember Ann Jillian's crusade against breast cancer and her Emmy-winning TV movie.
One of the best theme songs in TV sitcoms even though it's short-lived.
True
Ugghh this is a grim reminder of an era where sitcoms were dying....it was predicted they'd be gone like the variety shows. But thankfully shows like Cheers, Newhart and The Cosby Show saved the sitcoms.
John P Navin Jr also guest starred in a few Silver Spoons episodes as Ox and also in Facts of Life as Natalies friend Alfred. He was Cousin Dale in National Lampoon’s Vacation.
John also appeared on the very 1st episode of Cheers. He was the very 1st customer.
He was in two episodes of Silver Spoons in the first season as the bully Ox/Hobart.
@@good03boy They said that on here!
That was a back door pilot. There was even a part in the episode when Natalie comes to visit and the audience applauds like she was the guest on his show.
Brandon Tartikoff was trying to groom him as the next "Michael J. Fox" of NBC. It didn't work out, though.
I loved this show. I don’t care what anyone says.
It wasn't bad, although the mother's voice got on my nerves.
Casting this to my 1983 tv after a dinner of pork chops and apple sauce. Thank you :)
Ha, cute Brady Bunch callback.
A newly departed Jennifer slept here crossover would have been awesome
A Living Jennifer? perhaps
One of my favorite shows!
@7:19 Best ending to any of your videos. Really happy to hear she’s still with us and still is as of 2021 November 7th.
How about now? November 1st 2022, is she still alive now?????
@@gaywizard2000
Good question.
Still with us at age 72.
@@PabSungenis
Alright that's great 👍👍
@@PabSungenis oh good! what a relief!
This is the very first show I recorded with our then brand new General Electric VCR.
At that point in her life Ann Jillian was one of the most beautiful women in the world
Still is.
I thought she looked her best in the first season of It’s A Living.
@@cityhawk By the time that It's a Living came back in 1985, Ann Jillian was still recovering from her cancer ordeal and she put on some weight.
I was 14 and loved this show! I also loved Its a Living. I think it had some good ghost concepts if memory serves me. She was super likable, it's all coming back to me now! People didn't talk about cancer back then!
I know right.
Although this sitcom wasn't successful, Verity Lambert and Paul Mendelson, the writing and producing team behind the UK sitcom May to December, used the same premise for their next sitcom So Haunt Me, which ran for 3 series on BBC1.
The Miriam Karlin character in it is clearly based on Jennifer.
Thank you for posting this. I loved this show when I was young.
I loved this show when I was a kid, and Ann Jillian was gorgeous. Fun Fact: Brandon Maggart is Fiona Apples' dad!
0:27 THE FUCK YOU JUST CALL ME?!
Just found this, bc of course I listen to this theme song every couple of months. I was born 1987 so I wasnt even around for this. Thank you for this video and the glimpse into the viewing history. . Subscribing immediately!!
1:54 hey! that's the "Ever Bop your Baloney?" kid from the original National Lampoons Vacation Movie
4:04 Ann Jillian was like "Uht-Ahh... there aint gonna any Baloney bopping here, this is prime time television! and whats with that grungy old sock next to your bed? LOL 😝
Wasn't that the "You ever bob your bologna?" kid from Vacation?
Hopefully Joe Namath's three week disaster Waverly Wonders gets done sometime.
The whole NBC 78-79 fall schedule (minus Diff'rent Strokes) can fit. I would like to see Grandpa Goes to Washington starring Grandpa Joe (Jack Albertson)
Or how about Ned Beatty's 'Syznyk'.
@@Andrew12759 Oh yeah, "Szysznyk". That and "Eischied" might have the most unpronouncable titles television history.
That Szsznyk sitcom was against Little House to begin with on Monday nights (as well as The Captain and Tennille variety show), which didn't help.
CBS then moved the show to Wednesday nights, which pitted it against Grizzly Adams and ABC's Eight Is Enough.
Eischied had the misfortune to be placed against Dallas on Friday nights originally. NBC reran the series in the summer of 1983, but that placed it against Falcon Crest.
Oh, okay! That threw me for a minute regarding Ann Jillian because I thought her other show went on until the awful late 80s but I see that's what happened when the show came back in syndication without her!
Yup... Saw this one, too.
You should do one on Free Spirit.
Also do one on Two Of A Kind, the sitcom the Olsen twins did after Full House!
Okay....
The ghost of a beautiful actress who interacts with a teenage boy, primarily in his bedroom, and it's called "Jennifer Slept Here"...
That doesn't sound like a sitcom, that sounds more like a porn movie plot!😲
Lol. True! Lol
They were obviously going for a teen sitcom.
It was really a good show.. no sexual interaction whatsoever.. very innocent, and many times very funny.
Did not know about this show until this past week, sounds like an interesting show.
All 13 episodes were on RUclips years ago. It’s not funny. The plots aren’t very good.
Mandela Effect: I remembered Jason Bateman playing Joey.
He never played Joey. From 1982 to early 1984, he played Derek, the conniving friend of RIcky Stratton on Silver Spoons. He left to star in NBC's It's Your Move in Fall 1984 with future Young & the Restless star Tricia Cast and Married with Children's David Garrison.
Another suggestion is "The Ugliest Girl in Town", on ABC Sept 1968-Jan 1969. One of many "high concept 60's shows".
Ann Jillian was in the final season of Hazel.
Glad your back! Absolutely love this show Pab! Great job with this episode. 🤘
I liked "Jennifer Slept Here"!
I also liked "Mr. Merlin"!
"So, tell me: what's it like to have Bad Taste?" -Johnny Rotten
The episode I liked best, is when the kid found nude photos of Jennifer that she had or had someone take of her. He found the place she had them stashed while she was alive but he didn’t tell her because he was embarrassed & probably wanted to hold on to them longer. That was funny! So when he all of a sudden got weird being around her because it was awkward you know, she quickly deduced out what had happened. “You found my nude photos you twerp!” Watching this short clip, kinda refreshes my memory of the dynamic that they had which wasn’t the best. Kid was rude install of enthralled. Didn’t care for it but that’s why it was short lived
Don't know why RUclips recommend this to me, but im glad it did. Also, now I have the shows theme song in my head...
Not a bad thing.
Lorne Michael’s The New Show would make an interesting episode
And Mike Nesmith's Television Parts!
The Powers of Matthew Star should be on this channel even though unfortunately it ran a full season.
John P. Navin, Jr. did a lot of work in the 80's as a child actor. Wonder where he is now?
He was also cousin Dale in National Lampoon's Vacation in 1983!👍
@@martymcfly5434 Yeah, he did Cheers, Silver Spoons, Double Trouble, and Gimme A Break! as well.
Nobody knows, no info really, but he is my age so hopefully his cholesterol is OK and hes checking his blood pressure regularly!
....I think if this came out in the late 80's-early 90's and Ann Jillian was a 70's actress/disco queen, It would've stuck....Also, this show looks as if it could've been on Saturday mornings with "Saved by the bell".....

Ann Jillian looks gorgeous
Please do a 13 week theatre on Ann Jillian eponymous series
Wasn't this the same plot of one of the Meatballs movie 🤔
The 3rd with Sally Killerman.
Brandon Maggart a.k.a. Fiona Apple's Dad
I thought it was joke, but you’re right. Wow!
I talk to him on FB.
I briefly remember this but the one thing that came to me is there was simply no chemistry between Ann Jillian and her youthful protagonist. It would have been a better if they had done a more modern version of The Ghost and Mrs. Muir in which the male lead was older and a romantic relationship with Ann would have been possible. That plotline would have had interesting levels to play and we wouldn't have had the same recycled sitcom moments that this show epitomized.
No wonder I never heard of it, it was opposite Dukes of Hazzard. Armageddon wouldn't get me to miss Dukes of Hazzard at that time.
I couldn't understand a word the little sister said here.
I discovered this series during the hiatus, I was looking for Eddie Murphy clips and I found your episode on SNL. I'm glad to see you are back, but I want to let you know the Galactica 80 episode did not show up in my subs for some reason.
There was a clip of Glenn Scarpelli on the show Fantasy singing “Rocking Robin” and Ann Jillian played a groupie. It was, well...
If you need Elaine Joyce gossip for Mr. Merlin, let me know.
I tried to watch it. I would be the same exact age as that kid, and I couldn't stand him. He came across as a middle-age cab driver from New York. I don't know what he was trying to do.
I wonder what happened to John P. Navin, Jr. He really did a lot of work in the 80's as a child star.
He was a cutie. I was a teen in the 80s and I had a crush on him. 🥰
@@stylinsue535 He seemed to get a lot of work. Here are his credits: Jennifer Slept Here (his own series), Silver Spoons, Gimme A Break!, Cheers, Double Trouble, The Strongest Man in the World (TV-film), Taps, and National Lampoon's Vacation.
@@sha11235 And he was on Facts of Life which was supposed to be a spinoff with a millary academy. He was on two episodes.
@@Asukenick Didn't watch that show so didn't know that.
@@sha11235 Facts of Life is my favorite 80s show.
so he can't spank it without her watching
Have always had a crush on Ann Jillian.
There Was A Episode Of Jsh! Where Somebody Was Killed In A Accident! It Was Real Offbeat Episode. It Was Done Quite Well. It Wasnt' A Very Special Episode. It Was Just An Episode That Showed They Could Take Themselves Seriously. When John P.Navin & Ann Jillian Discuss It In The Last Few Moments Of The Show. Is Absolutly Heartbreaking Indeed. JSH Should Have Won A Emmy-Award For It.
It was his grandfather.
One error here: The two leads of the show were NEVER love/romantic interests to one-another. Jennifer Ferro was just a guardian/guidance point in the boy's life. :\
Could you do a video on the Michael J Fox show and Sean saves the world soon
I remember the sexual tension between Navin and Glen Scarpelli....
Are they both gay?
@@zt1053 I know Glen is. I can usually tell when someone is gay even when they play a straight character. I'm wrong sometimes though.
Intro is creepy as hell
Which we watched solely for Ann Jillian -- and Making a Living was funnier.
Second season of It's a Living, retitled Making a Living for the second season 1981-82, producers added former Mary Hartman Mary Hartman star Louise Lasser, who didn't quite fit in. Ann Jillian was certainly the star of the show.
@@teresapflaumer5717 Definitely. The others never really made an impression, and that stupid piano player/"comic relief" -- whatever he was -- was so obnoxious!

doned
Is it creepy to have a romantic relationship with a ghost in real life?
yes
It had potential but it needed more work. It needed more time to get better which it unfortunately never got.
This show may have worked with Suzanne Somers in the lead role.
Suzanne Somers was essentially, blacklisted for a while due to her shenanigans on the set of Three's Company.
The Show Could Have Been A Hit. But Unfornatly They Bogged It Down With Too Many Stupid Useless Charcters A Lot Tv-Shows Make That Mistake. Ann Jillian And John P.Navin Both Had Chemistry. If It Was Just 2 Charcters In The Show And Nobody Else It Proably Would Have Been A Hit. There Was 1 Episode Where He Confides In Jennifer Over The Death Of His Grandfather (He Died In A Accident) Its' A Very Touching Moment.
When i was in high school in 1982/83 when we had a poster appear in our drama class saying there were going to be auditions for a sitcom being held in our city, it was this show. They were looking for a boy between 13-15 who had a 'street smart' sense about him, no prior acting experience necessary. I went to the audition and ended up getting to the final 3, they loved my look etc.. i had to return a couple more times and even had to have my parents sign waiver that i could go to LA to shoot and have a guardian there etc. But in the end they went with that Navin kid who was already from LA and did have prior experience in several films. Their loss, i would have been better! But looking at these old clips the show was terrible, so flat flat and unfunny. I probably would have ended up being one of those washed up child actors lol. Looking at John Navin's imdb page he didn't exactly become a star after it either lol, his career fizzled and ended by 1993.
I thought they went with him because he had done a lot of guest spots so they wanted to give him his own show. I think he actually left acting voluntarily. I've asked some people if they know what happened to him, but no luck.
Also, if you had good values and parents, you wouldn't have ended up a washed up child actor. There are plenty that did okay for themselves.
You would have wound up strung out on drugs, living on Venice Beach or dead like Cory Haim!!!
It's a living wasn't canceled when Jennifer slept here debut...Ann Jillian left the show. They replaced Ann Jillian with Sheryl Lee Ralph
ABC had cancelled the show. It moved to syndication where it found a new life.
ABC canceled It's a Living in 1982. It would return three years later for the first-run syndication market. Ann Jillian continued to be a cast member for It's a Living for only that one season (1985-86) before Sheryl Lee Ralph came in as her replacement.
Could have helped of they picked a cuter kid to play the male lead.
I think at the time John P. Navin, Jr. was a very in-demand child actor and they wanted to finally give him his own show.
They could've tried a second season with a different actress at least.
No way.
He wasn't in love with Jennifer.
Gee, that song didn’t become a hit.
I just spit-taked my coffee listening to that last 5 seconds.
Joey Scarbury's theme to this show is just as bad as his Greatest American Hero theme.
Interesting how there are so many stars with issues.....yes health problems, mental problems, eating disorders....and it's always around the time they seem to need publicity for some project.....hmmm?
The saddest part of this whole thing was the fact that John P Navin Jr, once thought by network execs to be an everyman star of the future, had his career ruined by this show's failure. He had a few bit parts after the show's cancellation, and then he was done, and out of Hollywood.
He deserved better. One of my buddies worked with him back in the day, and said he was a really nice kid. John is 55 now, and I'm not sure what he's doing.
