Fantastic set of pics! I was a child of the 70s and although, living in Fenham, the PTE buses from Blackett St were my territory, I did always find the buses from Worswick St and Marlborough Crescent fascinating. The destination names in County Durham sounded so exotic and far flung, compared to the "Denton Burn", "Walker" and "North Kenton" that I was familiar with. 😄
Worswick Street, I remember the tiny sweet shop, owned by an Indian family...all opposite a church/mission?.....friday nights with my mates....newley married best place to people watch
Marlborough crescent was a long way from the centre of the toon. Many a Friday night had to leg it for the last bus out to Ryton - the 610 . Had a few technicolour yawns at the back of the Leyland National ,as well
Every one of those former bus stations should never have closed, every bus now travelling from the west & south to Eldon Square bus station is the main cause of congestion in Newcastle City Centre, but they won't admit it
I used to get the 25 to Brady Square every morning,Colin, when I worked at Newalls Insulation.Had to walk up Chowdene Bank, and then up Beacon Lough bank to the very top,for 8am.Often got the 43 to Malborough Crescscnt.
So many memories from Worswick Street Steve. So sad when it closed and then when it was demolished. That is a canny walk up there Steve. It was just now again I used Marlborough Crescent. I think it was the OK bus that went there for me.
I think you'll be lucky if you get a day without rain Colin for the rest of summer! Must be me thats put the mocker on it. The minute I dig the fan out because it's too hot and sticky..then my feet are bloody freezing and I'm trying to find a warm bit of my other half to put them on!!🤣🤣🤣🤗
What a fantastic video, Colin. Bringing back so many memories of journeys with family & friends. Very sad to see the old bus stations go. Thanks for the post!👍
Similar memories to yours, Colin. I was at Marine School in South Shileds in the early 70s and before we could afford to run cars, used the buses to get back home to near Alnwick on Friday nights then back to Shields on Sunday evening. The United service was 510, is it still running I wonder? My mother's family came from Consett and we have some old silent colour 8mm movies of the Venture buses that operated in the area, in and out of the bus station, now much smaller than it was then.
Worsick Street was owned by Northern and went south.Haymarket owned by United and went north.Marlborough Crescent went south and west but not sure if it was owned by Northern or United.Gallowgate owned by United and mainly did long distance stuff. The later Bus Concourse was owned by the PTE and mainly went south.
Maybe you can help which of the bus station's were near Newcastle Central. As a kid from 1947 till 1954 every year we used to travel from London to see my Grandparents. After we left the train station we went to the left to catch a bus to get us to Winlaton If you have time I would love to know. At the age of 78 I have fond memories of my times up north, as a young kid I traveled overnight to a foreign country where they all spoke a strange language lol. Thanks
@@colinthegeordiehistorian10 thanks for replying, just been on Google maps and it was in Marlborough Crescent , where the shopping centre "Times Square" is. Very different to the late '40's lol. The bus used to go down the A695 to the Chain Bridge then to Blaydon . Up Blaydon Bank to Winlaton, such happy days.
