  • Asha Elijah sings François Hardy's 'Peut-être que je t'aime' (Maybe I love you) from his newest album of cover versions "Roadside Songs." CD/download in 2025.
When I was a 12 year-old boy in London I had a big crush on French chanteuse and actress François Madeline Hard. In truth that feeling has never gone away.
I was not alone. Bob Dylan reportedly wrote her love letters, and dedicated a poem to her on the back of an early album of his, and Mick Jagger was also dazzled by her charm. About 300 million other guys were, too.
To me, François was the perfect girl... pretty; cool; hip; enigmatic; public yet private; shy; cute; coquettish; elfin; gamin; freckled; sensual; untouchable; playful & natural!
I loved especially her more melancholy, wistful love-ballads, though she was perhaps better-known for her bouncy, zingy, 60's pop-songs. Like me, she got inspired by listening to new sounds on Radio Luxembourg (I used to listen under the bedclothes with a torch when my Mum & Dad thought I was asleep!)
She wrote 'Peut-être que je t'aime' herself which translates into English something like this:
    Maybe I love you
Well, sleeping with you is not the end of the world
But it gets like that when you’re no longer there
A life next to you might be a very long one
But far from you, it's worse, it never ends
Sometimes we tell each other what we’re dreaming of
But then sometimes I get bored with all of that
And then I want to break free, and go to other places
But I miss you after a few nights
Maybe… maybe I love you, maybe… maybe I love you
I realise that I like the sky less than those eyes of yours
But for that, you have to roll them at me
I always have to try to forget them, those eyes of yours
But when you want something you always call me
Maybe… maybe I love you, maybe… maybe I love you.
Her original version has a delicious, melting harpsichord melody, every bit as pretty as she is herself.
My parents holidayed in France with me many times in my childhood. We used to hop over on the ferry with my Dad's car (or even put the car on a propellor plane, in those days).
And then it was driving down plane-tree country roads; picnicking by winding rivers with fresh baguettes, French cheese and big plum tomatoes, and, generally speaking, heading south! On the beaches I loved reading Tin-Tin and Asterix; having fresh croissants for breakfast; galette butter biscuits for tea, and canteloupe melon, asparagus, artichoke and other assorted exotic dishes in village-y French bistro's & restaurants!
But always I went on the hunt for François in the magazines or newspapers, and she was the continual soundtrack to La Belle France on the radio.
I searched for English newspapers for the English football results too, as the new soccer season began in August, and François was always the cover girl for some magazine or other.
On the beach I would play endless games with toy cars and sand-dunes, imitating Tin-Tin adventures, or win the long-jump as a skinny English kid at the Mickey Mouse Club.
François married the very handsome fellow musician Jacques Dutronc, and they had an equally handsome son called Thomas. When François died recently, aged 80, Thomas told the world simply: "Mum's gone." I found that amazingly touching. I think she was a good Mum.
As she aged she got even more beautiful, to my eyes. When I was older, and a musician myself, I dreamt of trying to contact her to sing duets with her, and I wrote to her management one time. But I guess I was way down in the queue of 300 million!
I aim to be bolder in my next life!
France has this extraordinary tradition of numinous, iconic young chanteuses... which includes Edith Piaf; François, of course; Mireille Matthieu & now the very wonderful Pomme, upon whom I also have a very big crush!
And film actresses too... Catherine Deneuve; Isabelle Huppert; Audrey Tatou; Isabel Adjani and Brigitte Bardot to name but a very few.
I live in Hungary now, and truly think of Hungarian women as the most beautiful in the world, but I think it's actually tied... Hungary & France! There is something intangible these creative women have in common; fragile and fierce.
For this film I had considered driving from Budapest to Paris to make it, but then I had a car-smash indisposing my car (well, wrecking it, to be precise!) So then it dawned on me that we have Paris in Budapest... up by leafy Batthyány on the Buda side!
My favourite cafe in Buda is there, too, the super friendly & cool Coyote Cafe, which does it's own home-made Galette butter biscuit too, the Coyote cookie.
So I started the film there. I was just wondering what I could do to add a few more French touches to it all, when 2 very pretty teenage girls strolled by nattering in French! Amazing! I asked them if I could film them strolling by and talking in French, and they readily agreed.
They knew the song, loved François and approved of my French accent!
So that's the little story around this song!

A sweet and moving tribute to an unforgettable artist who was a very special human being. I love her songs with her sweet voice that is a balm for the soul.
She marked my childhood singing the song "La question" by the Brazilian composer Tuca and which is the name of one of Hardy's best albuns. Françoise helped several Brazilian artists in the 70s. There are dozens of beautiful songs that she composed as well.
One of the most beautiful songs that I love to hear sung by Françoise is called "Ma Jeunesse Fout L'camp" by the composer Guy Bontempelli.
Asha, thank you for your beautiful interpretation. 😍
You are beautiful too! Kisses in your soul. 💖💐🌟

Thank you, Claudia! Another of my very favourite artists was the French/Greek/Armenian singer Georges Moustaki, who also later loved and lived in Brazil!
