I am writing this in January 2024. Pink Friday 2 dropped a month ago. I woke up in the middle of the night and for some reason, couldn’t stop thinking about Nicki. Her legacy. I already knew it when she released the Re-Up, but it is so much more obvious now : Onika Tanya Maraj, a.k.a. Nicki Minaj, is one of the most influential artists in human history. Period. You can read that sentence again. If humanity survives a couple more hundred years, when they look back on the 21st century, they will mention Nicki Minaj as one of the shapers of it. Someone needs to tell her this at least once in her life. The world owes her so much. Personally, I felt heartbroken when she ranked Roman Reloaded as her last album, because that’s the era in which I got so deep into her. However, given the staggering, human-brain-defying acclamation she received as she manifested her global icon status, coupled with the intense and unfair backlash she faced from her hip-hop background, and whatever might have been happening in her private life, I empathise with her feeling uncomfortable about that era. She’s always said the Re-Up was an important, genuine addition to Roman Reloaded, and I completely understand why. As I was thinking about her legend, I was drawn to listen to Freedom again. I hadn’t listened to it in ages. I have chills now. This is certainly the most representative song of her career. The fact that it was released relatively early in her career and she is already asking “did I really prophesy everything I do ?” is yet another bewildering testament to her foresight. The first verse alone is scripture. The chorus is transcendance. I fear Freedom will only be truly appreciated once Nicki is no longer with us. That’s okay though, because we still have the countless other gems. Nicki Minaj, despite the hate, despite the insecurities, you will always be famous. Thank you for everything.
