Bud Grant’s weakness was also his greatest strength. His stubbornness. He never change the way he approached football. His ideas were pretty set in stone. Because they had worked for him for many years. The downside of that is that he did not want to adapt to a different situation like the Super Bowl.
As a Packers fan I got alot of respect for what Bud Grant did for the Vikings even tho he coached them be4 my time he understood football so like I said even tho im nor a fan of the Vikings i for sure respect Bud Grant
Bud Grant was just an AMAZING man. I don't think many people realize that even though Coach Grant played pro football in the NFL AND CFL, but he played professional basketball in.the NBA for the Minneapolis Lakers (who are now the LA Lakers) and he won a NBA Championship with the Lakers in 1950! Just an amazing person professionally and personally!
This is very similar to what legendary English coach Brian Clough did a year earlier. For some context, Nottingham Forest had won the Champions League the previous season becoming one of the smallest clubs to ever win the competition. However to start off the 1979/80 season, Forest was without their star player Trevor Francis. The previous February, Francis had become the first 1 million pound soccer player after his transfer from Birmingham City & had played a key role in Forest winning the Champions League. Despite this high salary (which was unheard of in the UK at the time) Francis was deeply unhappy with Brian Clough & his style of coaching & had moved to the US to play for the Detroit Express in the NASL to get away from that at least for the summer. Francis came back to Forest in late August 2 games into the league season & like this situation, was given a starting spot. Many in the English media were expecting Forest to have some sort of internal upheaval due to the other players being resentful of Francis because he did not have to go through Clough's hardcore training methods. However when Francis came back to training, Clough made him run through stinging nettles & the other players could shout whatever they wanted at him. Like Bud Grant, Clough did this to get all of the resentment towards Francis out of the way so that the team could then be more cohesive. It paid off big time as Forest retained the Champions League (becoming one of the few clubs to win back to back titles) by beating Hamburg 1-0 in the final.
We love Bud so much that it's practically sacrilege to mention he was outcoached 4 times. It's great to practice standing for the National Anthem; would have been even better if they had worked on some game-planning. They were "matriculated" all over four times
I see you're getting ahead of things today... in two ways. First, by releasing the third installment of Secret Base's "Histroy of the Minnesota Vikings" RUclips series drops a little later today. Second, by covering a Minny moment from 1980, where SB's latest segment will cover the team from 1974-79. Perhaps to give us mutual fans of SB & JG9 a little taste of what we all might experience in part four? Wink, wink, nudge-nudge...
@@OfficialJaguarGator9 That's just fine with me. Can't wait to see what you have in store ahead of next week's segment. Keep up the good work my good man.
I saw the 2nd half of that game when the Vikings miraculously came back and beat Cleveland on a Hail Mary pass to Ahmad Rashad to win the division. They gave the super bowl bound Eagles all they had in the 1st half of the divisional playoff game before falling apart in the 2nd half and losing.
I really wish Hard Knocks was around back then- I would have loved to hear the Vikings browbeating Doug Martin that day. I really think the Vikings should consider him for the Ring Of Honor.
If memory serves, Lynne was gone the next season??? He knew he was on his way out and it was his own "Hail Mary" pass in a last ditch effort to get the Vikings to the SB. But it did get the Cowboys to three consecutive SBs.
This unofficial Official Jaguar Gator 9 historian will remind everyone you made a video about the punishment Eagles Coach Andy Reid gave George Hegamin before the 1999 season.
It's kinda crazy that the detroit lions, the worst team in 1979, went 9-7 in 1980, literally tied with the vikings for the division title. Billy sims was so great
@stevenbauer4799, i think the Thanksgiving game vs. chicago cost them. Literally in overtime, the kickoff was run back for a td. Their offense never touched the ball
Didn't one of the Vikes just turn his back on Martin and do the "Huffy crossed arms"? And that one was the one that STILL had a problem with Doug Martin?
Danielle hunter is the Vikings active sack leader with 71. Not Harrison smith. Although Harry IS the most under rated safety in football. The man’s been elite in run stopping his entire 13 year career.
@@OfficialJaguarGator9 fair. Gotta admit, I had a mini heart attack. I’m a Vikings fan so I was like “whoa wait a second, did we lose Danielle and I missed it” 😂😂😂 had to check and make sure he was still a Viking
bud was a good guy. a good coach not a great coach who couldn't win the big one. he couldn't match up against the landry's, shula's, noll's of the time. shula and stram owned bud in the s b. of course vikes had the huge home field advantage playing in the freezing conditions of minn. for jan. playoff games. Once vikes left that for neutral site of s b they had no advantage. bud couldn't adjust or change the game plan. bud-one of the solid not great coaches that won-just not the big one like marty, knox, levy.
The assumption Tom hanks team would not accept Matt Damens character is pure none sense ! They should have had a director who was in combat and understands why we are there with these other guys ! They would maybe not be happy with a mission that is completely out of their MOS , But they would be thinking of Ryan's Mother and his dead brothers before their own petty dislikes . God knows they wished someone would do it for them if they or their friend could go home ! Everyone goes to basic , learn what I did for 10 years !
Bud Grant is one of my favorite coaches of all time. He deserved to win a Super Bowl.
This kind of ingenuity makes me wonder how the Vikings never won a Super Bowl under Grant. What a smart man he was!

Bud Grant was a genius as a coach.
Today I learned something about a movie and football.

I so love this story. It’s so easy to love Bud Grant. There was a stereotype about him in the 1970’s that was so inaccurate.

Had to do one more Bud Grant story before we hit Les Steckel’s Year of Terror next week
@@OfficialJaguarGator9 That's just fine with me. Can't wait to see what you have in store ahead of next week's segment. Keep up the good work my good man.
I’m inspired by what happened at 19:56 to recommend new merch with a picture of you in your studio and the words “I Should Note”.
That reminds me of the movie The Miracle when they do like endless gassers

Nice!

Grant's in their Ring of Honor! Martin is not, but he's got a pretty good case
Lol you said he only played 10 sacks another great video
Excellent
How do you know it's cold outside? When Bud Grant is wearing long sleeves.
I think that actually means it's so damned cold that hell itself has, indeed, frozen over....😂
I think Mike Lynn's legacy was destroyed with the Herschel Walker trade.
If memory serves, Lynne was gone the next season??? He knew he was on his way out and it was his own "Hail Mary" pass in a last ditch effort to get the Vikings to the SB. But it did get the Cowboys to three consecutive SBs.

lions would have won central but lost at home to succs costing lions division.

He played 10 Sax for the team. That's extremely impressive! Lol!
How much is the Gardner Minshew tier?
Did Doug “Mardin” replace Jim Marshall after Marshall retired the year before?
Didn't one of the Vikes just turn his back on Martin and do the "Huffy crossed arms"? And that one was the one that STILL had a problem with Doug Martin?
He played 10 sacks with the team? You mean 10 seasons?
Danielle hunter is the Vikings active sack leader with 71. Not Harrison smith. Although Harry IS the most under rated safety in football. The man’s been elite in run stopping his entire 13 year career.
Yeah that was poor wording on my part. Hunter is already ahead of Martin, so I meant the next closest active player with a shot at the top 10

I dont think he would care cause he was more concerned with being happy and seeing the others around him happy
