Those guys had a whole nation behind them and unlike most of today's athlete's, they cared.I miss the expos.

this is what a locker room is suppose to look like after elimination , I remember after the Habs lost to the Rangers in 2016 playoffs , they just didnt seem to care .

You could also throw the '86 Red Sox in the mix who was twice "One Strike Away" from wrapping up the World Series.
Oh I remember that game right down to the bitter end . Seems like it was just yesterday .
43 years later and this series still hurts. All the what ifs. If the Expos had won would they have beaten the Yankees in the World Series. If the Expos had beaten the Yankees would that have sparked more good seasons by this team? 79-81 the Expos had three great teams and only two playoff series to show for it. Sad.

I'm from Ontario and I root for the Blue Jays but the early 80s Expos will always have a special place in my heart. They were Canada's team and we were all rooting for them.

What a great team. Poor Steve Rogers. He was the wrong choice in that situation. He was NOT a relief pitcher. Always started slow. Meanwhile Jeff Reardon, The Terminator, was sitting in the dugout. . .

Just rewatched the whole game. I can't believe a lot of people still putting the blame on Steve Rogers for giving up that home run and for Jim Fanning for putting him in there in the 9th. Truth is, you also have to look at how quiet their bats were. The Expos had difficulty generating offense in key moments in this game and this series.
Andre Dawson had zero RBIs in this series and the entire 1981 playoffs. Tim Raines didn't get to use his speed as much on the bases as he hit for low average as well as low on base percentage. Warren Cromartie was largely MIA offense-wise besides game 2 of the series. Chris Speier/Rodney Scott made good defensive plays but were also relatively quiet at bat.
As a lifelong Expos fan, I am just as saddened and devastated at their lone real shot at the World Series, but we have to remember that baseball is a team game, a team wins based on the sum of its parts. The Dodgers were just simply a bit more clutch in the big moments. Still, the 1981 Expos were a great team and those who were lucky enough to catch the incredible fever in the Big O at the time were treated to some exciting moments.

I will NEVER fault Rogers for it. He should not have been pitching. He was my hero as a kid and it has not changed.

Felt bad for Rogers as he was the reason they had made it there in the first place.. Right before Monday hit the dinger, Ron Cey drove one just shy of the fence. It gave me a really bad feeling; Rogers just didn't have it that day.
Of all pitchers, I still can't believe that it was The Ace of the Montreal Expos who gave it up to Rick Monday. Steve Rogers was Their Ace!
Bill Lee should have came in relief instead of rogers as rogers was a righty and bill was a lefty and bill was loose and ready to go
it was painful, to watch the Expos lose 2-1 to the Dodgers because of a 9th inning hr by Rick Monday, which comes just 1 year after watching the Expos lose the 1980 NL East division title to the Philadelphia Phillies because a 11th inning 2run hr by Mike Schmidt. In both years, the Expos lost to teams that would go on to win the World Series Championships of 1980 and 1981.
As a Dodger fan I'm thrilled they won, but as a Dodger fan, I understand loss. This was good, honest baseball. Respect Expos.
Bring BB back to Montreal with the name EXPOS'S....Love the uniforms....it will happen.

This was an excellent video. It’s very difficult to watch. Then as now I live in the Los Angeles area and I am a Dodger fan. Having said that, the other team I supported in the 1980s was the Montreal Expos. Of course, I was glad That the Dodgers ultimately defeated the New York Yankees for the World Series title that year. But, I kept on thinking
throughout that series that the National League team should have been the Montreal Expos not the Los Angeles Dodgers.
I think that the Expos would of defeated the Yankees as well. I know how you felt about that Expos team, what was there not to like? They had classy guys like Gary Carter and Andre Dawson. And I'm a Dodger fan too.

Rogers was sent on to pitch the 9th because Jeff Reardon was nursing either a sore back or elbow injury; in any event, he wasn't available to pitch the 9th for the Expos, which hurt them in the end. Rogers almost got through the 9th unscathed...until Rick Monday took him deep.
Did he pitch the day before , with about one inning of 'warmup' and i use the term warmup loosely cause it was freezing that day Rogers came in.
David Johnson did it a lot in the 1986 World Series for the Mets

I’m sure this was made up in the 2019 World Series. Did the Nationals share their World Series Championship with The City of Montreal(Where they were originated)?
I'll never forget when the '04 Red Sox won the World Series and ended that 86-year curse, Pedro Martinez shared that championship with the city of Montreal. He began his career with the Expos in the early nineties.

Yes he did, after the Dodgers were stupid enough to trade him to Montreal. Did you know that he is A Younger Brother to Ramon Martinez, who was A Starting Pitcher for the Dodgers at the time?
The smartest of the 3 Teams who have kept him was the Boston Red Sox. And believe it or not, Pedro Martinez was the one who opened the eyes of the Red Sox Brass about Big Papi after he was cut by Minnesota after the 2002 Season. The 2004 ALCS MVP was one of the main reasons why Boston won it all in 2004.

Jiltedin2007, you can say it was made up for the Expos as the Washington Nationals, they defeated the Dodgers in the NLCS and went on to win a 7 game road World Series vs Astros.

It was in the Division Series when Washington knocked out the Dodgers with Ex-Angel Howie Kendrick(how fitting) hitting that Grand Slam that won Game 5 for the Nationals, then they swept out St. Louis for the Pennant before embarrassing the Astros in the World Series by winning all four of their games at Houston. The 2019 Astros are now the only team in MLB History to have lost all four of their games in the World Series at home.
@Jiltedin2007 Alright my mistake, but I still knew that they defeated them in 2019, and yes I already knew that the road team won every game in the World Series vs Houston, that's what I meant when I said 7 game road World Series vs Houston.

Cool footage, never seen it before. As heartbreaking as this moment was for Expos fans, they were beaten fair and square on the field that day. What happened to Expos fans in 1994 was a far greater tragedy as they were completely denied the chance to see what their best ever team could do because of the strike. 1981 = disappointing end to a great season. 1994 = doomed to wonder how the season would've ended.

When did sports media stop coming into losing locker rooms to interview athletes at their most vulnerable? Or do they still? Seems like it was more common in the late 70s and 80s than it was after that. Were there rules made about these things that restricted access to the losing team in elimination situations? You would get some very powerful, authentic scenes but I could also imagine these athletes felt intruded upon to some extent. Watching footage of George Brett politely do interviews at his locker after his Royals lost Game 5 of the '76 ALCS to the Yankees (i.e. the Chris Chambliss game), I couldn't help but feel terrible for him. His voice and tone was just so despondent yet he still tried to answer as best he could.
Probably the worst moment in the history of Montreal professional sports, save for the Expos actually leaving Montreal.

The dome portion of the stadium was forever an on-going entity. The tower that supported the retractable roof was not completed until around 1988 I believe. It never worked properly and was replaced by a permanent roof in the early 90s.
