Two of the greatest OTELLO voices during the 1930s belong to Merli & Zanelli. Melchior also was another but the MET refused to release him from his Wagnerian duties but he was able to sing his OTELLO elsewhere during this time. Martinellli another possibly definitive OTELLO, simply should have embraced the role when his voice could have supported his interpretive efforts but by the time he took the role on he was no longer vocally at his peak. Another wonderful aspect of the recording is the contribution of Claudia Muzio who although a sick woman still had enough vocal stamina to record her two excerpts memorably. She passed away a short time later that year & is one soprano that I wish I had been able to see & hear: Giorgetta in the MET premiere of IL TABARRO for example.
