I got to see the original production of this play at the Signature (thank you, subsidized ticketing!), and thought it was one of the best theatrical experiences I had ever seen. Lila Neugebauer directed it and it was designed completely differently than the photos I see on the National's website, and although the Dorfman is intimate, the original production was so intimate -- traverse seating, no more than ten feet from the actors -- that you couldn't help but be drawn into what was happening (some of which I still don't understand years later). Maybe the difference in the space itself contributed to the experience of that production?

Hello there. I hope you spot this random comment on an 18-month old video!
After using RUclips quite a lot for a while, it suddenly occurred to me that there must be a theatre review channel somewhere and up you popped on the search.
Background: I used to go to the theatre a lot, then I didn't very much due to financial constraints. But at the end of 2018 things improved a lot and I started going again. 2019 was a really busy year for me, three or four shows a month.
Firstly, I really enjoyed your review and like your style. I've watched three now and all have been very enjoyable.
Now, The Antipodes. I knew nothing about this play or this writer, and I must admit I really went for Conleth Hill and Arthur Darville. (I was kind of stalking Game of Thrones and Doctor Who actors!) Unlike you, I actually really enjoyed it. I like stories about stories and their importance in our culture. On the face of it, it's a group of people trying to come up with a hit TV show. But somewhere round the halfway mark, a thought occurred to me and I still believe this to be true. They're not writers creating TV shows. They're - gods? elemental beings even greater than gods? and they are trying to create a new universe after some kind of disaster led to the cancellation or destruction of the last one. Of course, we're unable to comprehend what these things look like or get anywhere close to their understanding. And so they're reduced to fairly stock or stereotypical people talking about mundane things. Maybe it is some kind of entertainment and we're all being watched and played with.
Anyway, that's what was whirling round my mind when I left the theatre. I put it in my top 10 theatre experiences of the year.
I'm going to start going through your back catalogue and doing some random drive-by commenting on things I saw as well, with my thoughts and the occasional anecdote.
I hope you're going to keep going when things start up again. I have tickets for Walden, Constellations, The Comeback, Bach & Sons, Anything Goes and Magic Goes Wrong, plus a lot of money in gift vouchers from postponed shows. In addition I have a lot of concerts to see in the autumn. Hmm, better look for a concert review channel . . .

THANK YOU! Honestly, thank you for this, my sentiments exactly! I haven't seen The Flick, but I loved John, it was just so beautifully weird that I thought I'm going to love this as well. But Oh My Goodness what a miss! The first time I checked my watch it was only 30 minutes in, and it was pain and agony from then on. After reading the premise I imagines it would be something like "12 angry men" - a group of random people who share a space over a short period of time and come out of it transformed and affected by each other's stories. I think that's what she intended anyway - to show how we are all connected through story telling and how we share them to share joy, pain, sadness, look for comfort in them etc. But it failed miserably! I didn't care about any of the characters, it wasn't engaging or relatable, it was just random. 2 hours of my life I'm never getting back...

Phew! I'm glad that after a bit of toing and froing, that I chose to see (the excellent) 'Master Harold...' instead of this. It does somewhat sound like a gratingly pretentious experience of style over substance. I had been considering trying to cram in another trip to fit this in, having not yet seen an Annie Baker play and lured by the casting, but shall now likely save time & money by giving it a swerve.
I'm incredibly late in saying so, but you're not alone in your appreciation of The Starry Messenger. I caught it off of the back of your review and thought that it was a quietly profound, beautifully observed piece. It's one of my favourite plays of the year.

Hey Guys, it's a hilarious comedy about a writers' room. Writers will find it really amusing. Agreed that makes it a bit niche! And there's a theme around telling stories in the modern world. I think the title is misleading. It should have been called "The Writers' Room". Enjoyed your review.

I know I can always rely on you guys to clarify my thoughts after a show. I came out feeling utterly confused and like I had missed a big scene that pulled it all together. I was expecting so much better from such an amazing cast. If you do some reading around it you can get more of an idea for what the point was but I don’t think that’s really the point, that doesn’t make it very enjoyable.
Also, what you saying about Southend!

I've had this experience so many times... I always find it fascinating how when I see a dreadful show, I might see others in the audience apparently really enjoying it despite my polar opposite view. Its almost like we were watching two different shows in the same room. Even more baffling is that based on your summary of this show, why the producers thought this would be a crowd pulling show and worth putting together?

I generally agree with your reviews, but occasionally we do differ. You somehow seemed to enjoy When We Have Sufficiently Tortured Each Other earlier this year, yet I hated it. The Antipodes is a really odd piece, yet it kept me hooked throughout. No I'm not entirely sure what was going on most of the time, but having seen John I was sort of expecting that. Probably not a show to recommend to a broad general audience - for aficionados of slightly weird stuff only.
Not the greatest thing I have seen, but nowhere near the worst. I would happily have watched it again instead of the utter tedium that was [blank] at the Donmar.

Thanks again Leggers. I’m glad I gave this one a miss. I was torn because the play has a couple of actors in it that I really like. However I have been left bored to tears by the writers other plays. Legger Nathan’s looks of pride and amusement really make a Legger Simon rant for me.

I couldn't agree more with this review. The play was meandering and pointless. I almost fell asleep watching it. One to avoid.
