White House furniture and draperies, etc., are kept in warehouses and new occupants can choose some things from those instead of buying new. The presidential desk, for instance, is chosen from antiques we already have in storage. Much is donated, too.
They really should only get to touch the private personal areas, everything else should be done by a committee that stays the same and has no affiliations.
Trump actually did speak to the committee that is in charge of repairs/decor. No one was really keeping up with repairs. He and the First Lady did a lot of restoration that was needed and repairs that were long over due. As far as the decor, they basically switched furniture, paintings, etc. around and he even paid for a few items, not sure exactly which ones. Everything was long over due. It looks a lot better.
The White house curator is the one how desides what happens to the basement & first floor, but de 2nd & 3rd are the private floors & the family can choose whatever they want since all the historic things are below those floors.

As a disabled veteran I go to the VA hospital every month. There is always a large photo of the current president in all federal buildings. During trumps presidency he had his picture removed twice because he didn’t like it. It cost the tax payers millions to redistribute that picture to all federal facilities. Every time I passed it in the hallway I always gave him the ONE-FINGERED-SALUTE!
I hada chance to get my custom back brace replaced and eye surgery with Trump thru Community Care but the VA screwed that up. I can only think the back brace disappeared out of the computer because it indicates disability Social Security determined was during active military service. What excuse for not providing me a letter the eye surgery was no cost to me, as they insisted. The day to have to first surgery, I was told I had to pay $700 cash up front each surgery. No one told me. I had no letter. I had no way to prove every time I was told the VA was paying in full, and I do not pay. It is my experience the VA remained as dysfunctional as ever, regardless of U.S. President, and worse with Obama. I received a letter from the VA with a threat, if I did not sign with the VA I would be fined $2,000 ..another lie, I have MediCare.

The renovation to the White House has to be approved by the White House Historical Association. It is also paid for by that organization. The president doesn't put any money into the renovation.

My guess is that the most extensive remodeling happened during the Truman Administration, when the entire interior of the main building had to be rebuilt, as the wood structure was rotting away. This wasn’t done because Truman wanted it; it was a necessity, as the structural integrity was in bad shape. Trump actually did speak to the committee that is in charge of repairs/decor. No one was really keeping up with repairs. He and the First Lady did a lot of restoration that was needed and repairs that were long over due. As far as the decor, they basically switched furniture, paintings, etc. around and he even paid for a few items, not sure exactly which ones. Everything was long over due. It looks a lot better.
The White house curator is the one how desides what happens to the basement & first floor, but de 2nd & 3rd are the private floors & the family can choose whatever they want since all the historic things are below those floors.

As a disabled veteran I go to the VA hospital every month. There is always a large photo of the current president in all federal buildings. During trumps presidency he had his picture removed twice because he didn’t like it. It cost the tax payers millions to redistribute that picture to all federal facilities. I can only think the back brace disappeared out of the computer because it indicates disability Social Security determined was during active military service.
What excuse for not providing me a letter the eye surgery was no cost to me, as they insisted. The day to have to first surgery, I was told I had to pay $700 cash up front each surgery. No one told me. I had no letter. I had no way to prove every time I was told the VA was paying in full, and I do not pay.
It is my experience the VA remained as dysfunctional as ever, regardless of U.S. President, and worse with Obama. I received a letter from the VA with a threat, if I did not sign with the VA I would be fined $2,000

My guess is that the most extensive remodeling happened during the Truman Administration, when the entire interior of the main building had to be rebuilt, as the wood structure was rotting away. This wasn’t done because Truman wanted it; it was a necessity, as the structural integrity was in bad shape. The outside shell was left in place, but the entire inside had to be reinforced, and largely rebuilt. It was so extensive that Truman and his family had to live across Pennsylvania Avenue, at Blair House. The changes any president makes are never necessary beyond maybe the Leisure activity changes. But it's there so each President has a place that feels like their personal home.
