  • During the 30 years war Finland was under Swedish control, Finnish cavalry were known to be the best in the world, and were the favourite weapon of the Swedish king, they proved them self in battle many times and have become an icon for Finnish courage.
    I decided to upload this with English lyrics as I myself do not speak fluent Finnish and thought there should be a version of this with English lyrics.
    It should be noted that this is the lyrics for the English version of the song, not a direct translation.

Though the Finnish language was neglected and the nobles in Finland spoke Swedish I must insist that that in the military the Finnish regiments and the soldiers were held in high regard. No, There's an old saying from the time we got independent. "We're not swedish and we don't wan't to be russians thus let us be finnish". Our idea of nation called Finland started from the notion that we did not feel like either of our neighbours and did not want any part in their affairs. Our culture is of our own nad our language too though occupation has left it's signs. Our genes differ so much from the indo-european and slav it's just outright stupidity to claim we're scandinavian's. We're more related to say, Estonians, long dead livonians, Vepsians or Karelians. Now sven fuck off ot your lovely declining country and i'll stay in mine.

      ***** Tbh. Sweden is fine, sure there's immigrants but what country doesn't have them and is that really something you measure the standards of a country? If they have immigrants they are bad? Who cares about that when there's more serious matters to think of. Also I don't think Finns ever thought they are an independent nation, no. I think they were fully aware that they were independent people though, just like the sami people under the rule of another nation. In short the Finns under Swedish rule thought of themselves as Swedish citizens.

    I love that Finnish heraldry. Mad Lion stepping on a saber (russian/eastern weapon) and slashing with a broadsword towards west where Sweden is.

    • @SgfGustafsson
      @SgfGustafsson Год назад +5

      It doesn’t represent slashing towards Sweden. In fact this heraldry was made by the Swedish and used to represent what is now Finland when it was part of Sweden. The origins are from John III’s, (the king of Sweden and grand Duke of Finland), grand ducal coat of arms. You are correct about the Russian saber, which represented the Swedish king’s struggle with the east. Part of the heraldry is originated from Karelia’s coat of arms which symbolizes a struggle between east and west as Russia and Sweden fought over it, again before Finland existed and it would have been a separate entity and people anyways. The Karelian coat of arms was also made by the Swedish. The left arm/sword in it is supposed to be the Swedish sword, in the style of the top sword of the Finnish coat of arms, and the right arm/saber the Russian side.
      So the Finnish heraldry is a combination of several Swedish heraldries created by Sweden and used by Sweden to represent their eastern territories, and Finland has continued to use it once finally created and freed from Russia. My point is it doesn’t make sense to say the sword is slashing at Sweden, although I’m sure many patriotic Finns may feel that way.

      You don't seem to realise, that the Big Sweden before 1809 was not the same as the Little Sweden of today. Everything "Swedish" before 1809 was "Finnish" too, because Finland was an original and integral part of Big Sweden.
      Finland has existed for c. 1000 years - perhaps longer - and more or less the same as today for 500 years.
      All the Swedish heraldry before 1809 was and is Finnish heraldry too. It's ours.

    • @SgfGustafsson
      @SgfGustafsson 10 месяцев назад +1

      @timoterava7108 Yeah, that is essentially what I said. That's exactly why it doesn't make sense to say the Sword is slashing towards Sweden. I did also say that the coats of arms came from Swedish noblemen/kings and they were from modern Sweden.

      ***** I am proud and honest Finn. I know history. Scientists are unanimous, that Finland was better off under Russian "tyranny" than under Swedish rule. Vain wars, which benefitted only Sweden, stopped nearly entirely. Finland also flourished economically, because we could keep our own taxrevenue, which was not in case during Swedish rule. These are simply facts!

      subrosa Swedish brutal oppression? Finland basically was Sweden, Sweden didn't treat Finland or it's population any different from today's Sweden. Finland was Sweden and just like the swedish men the finnish men "had" to go to war. The nations we know today (sweden and finland) basically was the same back in the days, Finland wasn't called Finland, but Österland like Norrland in Sweden.

    • @subrosa7708
      @subrosa7708 10 лет назад +19

      Vasquezfulable That is totally wrong claim! There was huge difference between treatment. Sweden advanced economically and its populace increased normally, while in Finland was opposite. And it was intentional politics from Swedish court. There is solid statistics supporting my view. Don"t believe official historywriting. It"s propaganda like most of them.

      The Finns shouldn't complain over Sweden at all. They didn't do massacre of southern Swedish during the 1600-1700s nor did they try to change their way of speaking or language. In fact FInnish Swedish is not an accent but a dialect that is older then the modern Swedish. what people got to learn is also that the people in Scandinavia was more powerful then their leaders.If they didn't want to get ruled they would simply do rebellion, and i cant see that the Finnish did many rebellions against the rulers of Sweden, there where def more from Mora,Halland,Skåne and etc.

Novgorodin alueet olivat myös Ruotsia huomattavasti heikommin hallittuja (mm. lainvalvonta oli heikompaa), mikä varmaankin kallisti suomalaisväestön Ruotsin kannalle, joka valvoi oikeudenmukaisuutta eli lakien noudattamista tarkemmin.

    For those who were wondering, the Hakkapeliitta were a light cavalry mercenary unit that fought under Gustaf Adolphus' employment during the Thirty Years' War in the 1600's. They were used primarily for hit-and-run operations and, sadly, targeting the civilian population, but they also fought in battles along other military units.
    The word itself comes from the misheard interpretation by non-Finnish speakers, which was 'Hakkaa päälle, Pohjan poika!' in Finnish (roughly meaning 'Cut them down, sons of the North land!).

    • @Jauhl1
      @Jauhl1 7 месяцев назад +2

      They weren't mercenaries, they were county regiments as all others in Sweden. Each county was required to raise a certain amount of soldiers, cavalry men was usually enlisted by a group of farmers. a "rusthåll" in exchange for tax exemption. but conscripted if not enough men was found.
