    This is the song that put QR on my personal radar.
    Geoff’s range and his ability to sustain notes with such a beautiful vibrato wasn’t common or popular at that time with many singers.
    The band’s quality of musicianship, the way they composed their music and the quality of the lyrics was so much better than most of the cookie cutter garbage that was being promoted by the labels at that time.
    Needless to say I purchased this CD and my appreciation of QR still remains to this day.

    commercially, empire was their most successful album and time period. Having said that, they never did 2 albums that had a similar sound so it was difficult for some people to get into them for a long period of time. Empire and Operation Mindcrime were the closest honestly, but they were MUCH bigger in Japan than ever in the U.S. as Japan has been VERY big fans of the metal genre for a long time. Judas Priest shared a similar fan base in Japan as did lots of metal bands of the 70's and early 80's. Geoff puts all other metal/hard rock vocalist in a catagory below him... he was a classically trained operatic vocalist that chose to sing metal/hard rock.

    In 1983 I was 18 and managing a indie record/Headshop store. One day our record distributer guy came in and knowing I loved Metal gave a promo copy of Queensryche's EP. I took it home and put it on the turntable and instantly was hooked. I've been a fan ever since and have seen them dozens of times.

    Nice reaction and honest. Btw, Queensÿche did not wanted to get more commercial, I do get the label would have wanted them to stay like this, but the band didn't. The label or recordcompany thought they had the next Maiden or Priest, but the band said "don't try to limit us, cause we'll change"... and that they did... every album up to Promised Land is different, they are artists, they wanted to go their own way. I praise them for that.

  • @purplekat5864
    @purplekat5864 Год назад +3

    You said you heard that the record label wanted QR to keep their sound like this but the band wanted to be more commercial. I've never heard that! Are you sure? Usually they talk about not wanting to just duplicate what they've done before...that they wanted to keep trying new things, etc. But I'm sure they wanted to sell more too, but not at the expense of creative integrity. Actually Operation: Mindcrime was a taking a big risk. I don't think anyone knew how that would be received. They weren't known for playing it safe.
    I'm always amazed at how Geoff can do so many vocal changes during a line, but still keep the volume and output very steady and even. It's hard to describe. Know what I mean?
    Yes, Cassandra, that was Geoff whistling. He's a whistler. I run out of breathe halfway through that!
    Yeah bass! Drums! Guitars! Backing vocals and harmonies!! They bring it ALL!
    This was one of the first songs they wrote together, so their sound was still in the early stages of formation. When you've heard the span of several albums you can see the growth and subtle changes that occurred throughout this process. Such a capable band!!
    Oh yeah, the slow, sexy guitar was fabulous! They aren't afraid of taking their time, musically, to paint the mood they want.
    If you notice, they frequently write songs that run soft and hard. Slow and fast. Calm and intense.
    I love hearing both of your opinions on these QR songs you've been doing! Interestingly diverse in how they strike each of you. More!
    SQUIRREL!! yes, that's exactly what I thought too! Haha!

  • @j800r_aswell
    @j800r_aswell Год назад +2

    I don't know who's been feeding you your info, but it couldn't be more off the mark. They STARTED as a more generic, "commercial" metal band with the release of their debut EP. Then started to shift slowly more and more into a more progressive sound with The Warning (their first album, still mostly metal standards with hints at a more progressive sound), Rage For Order (Their second album. Beginning to take a more progressive approach to their songwriting style.) Operation: Mindcrime (A concept album. A massive risk for a relatively new/unknown band only releasing their third album.) Empire (A focus on separate standards rather than any musical or lyrical theme. This one saw them achieve massive commercial success with their first and only number 1 single and the album going multi platinum. The subsequent touring along with Eyes of A Stranger receiving a lot of airplay caused them to also have large success with Mindcrime, though Empire was the most successful.)
    My favourite album, Promised Land, was released after this in 1994. Contrary to Empire, this was easily their most progressive sounding output and started to alienate some fans who were used to a more accessible sound. Though not a concept album, the album had a little more of a lyrical theme to it than their previous output.
    There were plenty more albums following this but this marked their most successful period and I'm sure you don't want me to go through the entire discography. In short, the band never wanted to "go commercial". They just wanted to do their own thing and were successful by result. Geoff was the most adventurous musically and never wanted to be confined to a single genre. Chris was of a similar mind (1997's release being the best example of this), but I believe the rest of the band were more closely tied to their metal roots.

  • @FreeMTrider
    @FreeMTrider Год назад +1

    Just found your channel. Good stuff. As for Queensryche wanting to be more commercial, that's not entirely accurate at this point. They started making more abstract and creative music.....to the point of making albums that were very different from the last. I saw them on this tour...the Warning when they were opening for KISS. Rage for Order was next and they brought it to another level live. As for Operation Mindcrime, no one was counting on it being a break through album and the record company did not know how to market it. But the fans loved it. Empire brought them to headlining huge arenas. I saw them twice on that tour and they just couldn't be matched by too many bands during that time..

    Nice reaction! A couple responses to things you said.... First, that absolutely is Geoff whistling live.. (I've seen it many times and this was in 1984..before bands started using backing tracks). In addition to being one of the best singers I've ever heard, he's also one of the best whistlers! 😂 Also, it wasn't that QR wanted to be "more commercial", it was that they weren't happy with the engineering/sound of the first album (The Warning). That's why the next album that they recorded (Rage for Order) sounds so drastically different... but, definitely NOT mainstream or commercial. Anyway, love your honest reactions.

    This recalls the proggy metal ballads of the 70s, think "Child in Time," "The Wizard," "Stairway to Heaven," "We'll Burn the Sky," etc. It is intended more to evoke a mood than wow with technical wizardry and breakneck time changes.

    EVERYBODY harps on Operation Mindcrime, which is nothing less than the pinnacle of concept LP's that's ever been done, so I set that one on a shelf by itself. But, I gotta agree that their early work is my personal favorite in their catalog of material. Rage For Order is my favorite "other" LP...with their initial EP release and The Warning (2nd) very close behind. The MTV Unplugged show is awesome as well.

    You got your comment about them wanted to go commercial that was the opposite. You got it backwards operation mindcrime proves it. Next time that's when he went commercial that was because of pressure from the record label wanted single shorter songs in general. Empire theres 5 solid hit singles releases on it. MTV pushed it through the roof for them in 90/91/92 lead to Livecrime also.
