    I saw a tank recently with a dramatic hardscape, the new mini bolbitus plant, and a larger version…no other plants…it was beautiful.

    Don’t forget when you do water changes, the old water is amazing for watering your orchids as the broken down fish waste is a perfect fertiliser. I have done this for years.

      Depending on the water parameters it might be to hard or alkaline for constant use

    As a former betta breeder I have a few pointers..... Please flare your beta daily. You can use a tip of a pen or anything really that will trigger him to flare. Just show it to him through the glass. It's like a daily gym session for your fish. It's beneficial for its fins specially and his digestive system. And I would suggest lower the water level. When water level is too high betta ( specially half-moons) struggle to get to the top multiple time a day for an oxygen ( betta don't breathe oxygen from water but from air). Ideal water temperature is 28 degrees Celsius.

      Hello! Thanks for your comment! As a former betta breeder myself I will respectfully disagree with your points I’m afraid. 1. Flaring bettas is a novel concept without basis. No it will not help fins, it could cause tears in heavily finned breeds such as this one. Flaring is fine, once in a while, does great mentally for the fish, but every day is unnecessary. Snails and shrimps offer an opportunity for flaring as well for some bettas, to a much lower and safer degree than a mirror would in my experience. 2. No need for lowering the water level, as I pointed out I like ‘low cubes’ for this exact reason, this tank has a shorter height than laterals, substract the 5 cm substrate, substract 2 cm from top and hey presto you got 18 cm height, quite a short distance to travel 😁 3. 28 C is not ideal in the least, only appropriate when breeding. The higher the temperature, the shorter the life span due to increased metabolism. 25 - 26 c as a minimum has resulted in 3 years minimum in my betta lifespan without signs of stress, disease, lethargy etc.

    You can use pure ammonia to cycle a tank before adding fish. 5 drops per 10 gallons until testing shows it’s converted overnight.

    Random question: how often to you feed fish? I get a lot of conflicting advice. . . . Also, in a tank like this do you add liquid fertilizer tot the water or just the root tabs? Thanks!!! Hope your move goes well

    I have heard that betta fish jump and its adviced to keep a lid. What is your experience with that?

    • @Skymama21
      @Skymama21 8 месяцев назад +2

      They ABSOLUTELY jump out, in fact, even *with* a covered tank, I lost one of my bettas, he found a small gap between the filter and side, and jumped overnight. When I found him the next morning, he was still alive, but ultimately, SADLY, passed away. It was crushing and heartbreaking breaking!! So if you get a betta, please do cover the tank (helps with water evaporation too). Enjoy! Bettas are great!

      Hi, in my experience heavily finned Bettas such as this one rarely can jump out of the tank.. short fin ones though… they will find a way out sooner rather than later, I’m reserving those for a very tight lid setup 😬

    Is that a little larva in your tank? I recall you had that fly problem-hope it isn’t one of those!! ❤
