I did want to mention there is a point right at the end of the game where the Crystal Flash is appropriate to use. Without giving away spoilers, it is where you are drained of all your health and then left that way. You do have to manually use your reserve tanks in order to do that, as they are not drained automatically in that scene Though it is still useless, as there is a place to recharge your energy right after that, but it is still fun

@@goob6355Another thing that isn’t mentioned when doing the crystal flash is that you must have less than 50 energy to do it. This means nothing in your reserve tank, no extra e-tanks and below 50 health. And it does work on the switch version I have tested.
@@yorelyoung6407So that clip of Samus spreading out bombs around her is a healing technique? Did you watch from the timestamp or just look at the exact second I marked?
Great video! You forgot the spazer charge beam combo which makes sparks circle around Samus and then rain down. I think you’re right the wave beam combo is most versatile. Crystal Flash is really cool but I feel like it’s rare you would be less than 50 health AND in a safe spot to use the technique.
I'm curious as to what would happen if you do it with enemies around you? I've only done it in safe places and can't imagine monsters being able to interrupt it anyway, but I'd love to try it out.
@@Lordcamilli Samus has no s during a Crystal Flash, so she'll take damage for every frame an enemy is in contact with her. It's very possible that you'll die instantly that way, so they can be very risky to pull off.
When shinesparking horizontally, make sure you HOLD A, and then immediately hold left or right. Pressing the direction first results in a somersault, while letting go of A before pressing the direction just results in an upwards shinespark.
I remember learning how to shine spark as a kid and I thought I had gotten myself stuck. No instructions just a bird jumping super high over and over. Put 2 and 2 together and shine sparked out that hole and I nearly orgasmed. Easily one of my favorite gaming memories
Some important notes I'd like to point out: - Samus has no IFrames during a Crystal Flash. If an enemy walks into you, you'll take an absurd amount of damage, and the healing most likely won't be able to make up for it. - I always struggled with horizontal Shine Sparks as a kid, so if you're struggling, try this: If you hold A instead of tapping it, Samus will hover in the air for a brief moment before launching. If you press forward during this time, Samus will launch forward. This is also helpful for trying to initiate Sparks in mid-air, which you can do by pressing R during a spin jump (though you have to let go of it before you try to spark)
While it's not an advanced technique, an often overlooked one is the Moonwalk option in the settings. It allows you to walk backwards while shooting. There aren't a whole lot of situations where that even comes in handy, let alone is necessary, but it's fun to try.
So cool that the heal is possible. I tried as a kid so many things trying to do this move. Never knew though whether it was even possible but the cinematic tease had me obsessed

Seen the crystal flash but didn't know what it was called or how to do it and I did NOT know you can shinespark at an angle! WTF! This game was SO far ahead of its time.
Crystal flash can be useful on challange runs/speed run categories like reverse boss order. It can help you get through norfair without the varia suit.
For people who play on emulator: It works with bsnes hd beta 10.6, but not with ZSNES 1.51. This is probably because ZSNES can't read four inputs at once. I just tried it and put L and R on the same button as X and suddenly it works.

You can do a Charge Power Bomb shot with the Spazer Lazer, it's a vertical room clearing move and it is shown in the demo...kinda surprised you didn't cover that one
I'm sure someone has pointed this out already, but iirc after you trigger a charge beam combo you can change your equipped beam and the already-released projectiles will change to match that beam output. So release an ice beam bomb and switch to plasma for a more effective shield, for example.
The Wave Charge ability is called "X Factor" by the fandom and speedrunners like to use it for scoring quick kills on later bosses like Botwoon, Phantoon, and I think Ridley.
I couldn't find the video of him doing it but OatnGoats uses the crystalflash during a tournament or speedrun, or something out of the ordinary, it might have been for the sm arcade series he did it in. He even stated that he basically never uses it, but in that case it was super useful because of the situation he was in.
When the game came out there was an accompanying comic that referenced the “spirit bomb” thing to recharge health. I pulled it off once by mashing buttons. Never knew how to actually do it until til now.
There was a time where I needed to use the Crystal Flash. I just beat Ridley, but didn't have enough health to survive the trip back out (especially with the lava), so I had to go in & out of rooms to replenish my ammo enough to perform a Crystal Flash and restore my health.
Charge Beam by itself (w/o any other beam selected) let you charge it until you glowed, then jump and act as a low-grade Screw Attack. This was useful if you had to jump up or down to platforms where some enemy was camping out, but you couldn't shoot them. You could play the whole game without it, but it was yet another interesting move.
The only time I saw where the Crystal Flash was used to actually survive was in a Reverse boss speedrun. They have to kill Ridley 1st with no Varia suit so they have to time when they use the crystal flash to stay alive in the heat. Was super impressive
Ah wow I have beat a lot of Metroid games but I never knew about no.2 and I had accidentally done some of the special beam attacks but never figured out how to replicate the effects lol just needed the power bombs selected. Nice video.
Nice video! Im playing super metroid for the first time, and im so amazed... but these tricks are amazing!. I'm a little stucked with the space jump (i dont know how it works exactly, sometimes Samus mid-airjumps and sometimes she dont). I will practice these instead. Happy new your! Thanks for the video!
I've had issues with this in the past as well and I'm pretty sure it has to do with how you do your jump. If you simply press A she will jump straight up and will not spin. If you press A and then press a direction she will also jump without spinning and move in that direction. The Space Jump cannot be used while she is jumping like this. You must press A while holding a direction for her to spin while jumping and this is the only way for Space Jump to activate. It can be frustrating, but you eventually get used to it.
Hey @CaptBurgerson you forgot that you can change your weapon type in the middle of the charged power bomb move. For example do charge beam and Plasma and after the move activates swap plasma for ice or wave

This isn't a technique per se, but it's fun to see. Try using a charge beam combo, then enter the menu and swap your weapons. The combo's sprite will change accordingly.
Please do a tutorial of how to become better at walljumping. Also, how to hold on to the shinespark charge. There are some bits of Fusion and Zero Mission where I can’t get certain missile packs cos I don’t know how to hold/release/hold/release the charge.
It took me forever to figure out how to do the crystal flash ngl lol, that one was a bit puzzling, but I figured it out waaaaaay back in the day. XD I already knew all those other secrets lol.
It’s not that you take damage while using the shinespark. Rather, the suit’s auxiliary power cannot cover the cost of the technique so power is drawn from the tanks normally used to repair the suit
I’ve never heard this, so that’s interesting. That said, this is a semantics argument isn’t it? The end result, from a gameplay standpoint is the same. You lose health.
I struggled with learning how to walljump properly once I figured out it could be done. The problem I had was that I was always trying to press jump and the direction I wanted to go at the same time. It doesn't really work this way. If you spin jump into a wall and then just let her fall down, slightly tap the other direction and you will see her plant her feet on the wall. The direction is what preps her to do a walljump. Then you press A immediately after the direction and she will kick off. The window of time is VERY small. Just learn to slightly delay the A button press after the direction press and you'll figure it out.
Last time I played I couldn’t remember how to do the charge beam tricks. I knew they existed. I experimented with them when I was a kid. But I didn’t remember how they worked.
Shinespark/damage: "So don't abuse it too much, if you don't have to." But, MooOOOM, I want to. I have to. I promise to use crystal flash when I need. Please Mom, let me do the thing. On my honor, I will tidy my room and collect springball, if that's what it takes! 🥴
Only used that recharge thing cause GamePro said i could. Lol. And I learned to bomb jump cause I wasn't able to wall jump. I remember bomb jumping all the way up to that entrance on the left on the surface.
That's it for Dread and experiment n°Z-57 that guy should have dropped the function to Crystal Flash. Edit and why they removed those move in Fusion, Zero Mission, Samus Returns and Dread ?
I played this game when it was first released. I never discovered any of these. Back before internet everywhere you had to have a magazine subscription to Nintendo Power to get all the intel on features like this. Or a friend who did. Or trip over them by accident. If you had Forbidden Jutsu knowledge of a game you became a god on the playground for a few days. Now we can exist in a Schrodinger's box of knowing everything and nothing at the same time. I don't know if this was ultimately good or not.
ive seen it on weird order speedruns, hot norfair with no suit upgrades. i remember thinking, there's no way they can make it back. i was proven wrong.
0:41 He says these moves aren't mandatory and are outclassed by some other items and equipment later. However if you play randomizer the beam combos are actually quite useful. I had a seed recently where I had to enter a room with two giant sidehoppers without any upgraded suits, and no E-tanks. I used the beam combo since I had power bombs, plasma beam, and charge beam. It was able to wipe out the sidehoppers without me getting killed since they would have easily taken me out in 1-2 hits, losing some progress. Crystal Flash is a rare one to need, but can be useful in a pinch. And I'm certain that assessment didn't apply directional shinespark which is frequently used by speedrunners and randomizer racers.
I wasn’t really taking randomizers into account when I said that, just thinking of the original game. And definitely shinesparking is always useful haha, you’re right about that

This is super cool.
You can also do a morphball spark .
The Spazer does a Charge Combo also.
Shinespark/damage: "So don't abuse it too much, if you don't have to." But, MooOOOM, I want to. I have to. I promise to use crystal flash when I need. Please Mom, let me do the thing. On my honor, I will tidy my room and collect springball, if that's what it takes! 🥴
Omg these were so cool using the first time omggg
Only used that recharge thing cause GamePro said i could. Lol. And I learned to bomb jump cause I wasn't able to wall jump. I remember bomb jumping all the way up to that entrance on the left on the surface.
Crystal Flash is a new one for me.
Is there a reason you didn't include the spazer charge?
I honestly actually learned to wall jump on a snes emulator on my phone. Surprised me i got really good at it still can't mach ball at all though
I unironically, totally already knew these techniques!!!!
I SWEAR I DID!!!!🤯
Great video, sir.
Sadly won't be able to attend tonight's stream, sir🤕
Why did you not cover the charge and spazer beam? It has a combo too. Video feels incomplete.
i knew these just didnt know how to do them thanks bro
I only ever used the crystal spark once in fusion to see if it was possible.
I need to try these for sure thanks 😊
Crystal flash is the only one I never accidentally came across lol
Why skip the Spazer combo?
I don't know for sure, but maybe he never tried that one?
I already know all of these as I have mastered the original game on snes!
Crystal flash could help in hell runs
ive seen it on weird order speedruns, hot norfair with no suit upgrades. i remember thinking, there's no way they can make it back. i was proven wrong.
Well, this would have been useful information. Just finished playing this game yesterday!
Hope you enjoyed it! It’s one of my all time favourites
And definitely shinesparking is always useful haha, you’re right about that
Man I could barely hear your commentary over the MUSICS PLEASE tell where I can hear these reimagined versions of the old music that's in this video, the best redux's I've ever heard....and that's alot
Oh these are all from the actual game OSTs. Some from Super Metroid directly, a few are from Samus Returns.
I had no idea about the crystal flash
I’ve been playing this series and especially this game way too long to not know the last 2 moves.
Charge beam with ice.. go to start screen and swap beams for glitchy effects.. youre welcome!
They need to remake this in the Metroid Dread engine. But change nothing except movement fluidity and graphics.
Samus becomes alot more powerfull with those beam combos
How speedruners can charge de speed boost in a short room with no space to run?
Metroid speed runners are just built different
All that learning to code paying off lol
You missed the Spazer Power Combo.
Great vid. I ❤ this game 🎮💯🎮💯
Damn I had 10 health left in Norfair omw to Ridley and the crystal flash woulda actually been so useful
You can farm infinite health from the enemies that spawn in those rooms if that helps
I'm a little sad that you didn't show off the Spazer beam combo
I didn’t mention it directly I guess but I figured it was covered when I said that all the beams had combos lol
Poor forgotten SPAZER beam😢
May it rest in speaze
Crystal flash doesn't work for me, may need some kind of suit/armor for it to work
You do need morph ball, power bombs, missiles, and super missiles for it to work.
you need 10 of both missles and 10 powerbombs
11 power bombs are necessary along with 10 of each missile
Remember:
Less than 50 health
At least 10 Missiles
At least 10 Super Missiles
And at least 11 Super Bombs
11 PB is because we place one for the CF correct? Also, reserves need to be empty?
