  • A picture, taken around 1956, shows my older brothers and me playing with a Märklin H0/00 clockwork train and some other toys (amongst others Mobaco, Dinky Toys, Schuco). We were often playing together with our toys. From Sinterklaas (a Dutch chuild feast) my brother had received the Märklin S837/2 trainset with a 0-4-0 streamlined clockwork locomotive with tender and 2 goods wagons; I had received set S837/1, the same set but with two passenger cars. The locomotive of these sets was based on an American PRR streamlined prototype while the rolling stock was typical German. My first train broke and was thrown away. Recently I found the same train and added it to my collection.

I never made a video of my train with the S 870, but I tested it some years ago and everything went well. Now your video is an inspiration to replicate it with my clockwork set of Märklin and also the presence of (my) Leo von Giengen and Queen Elizabeth (also from Steiff), both residing at Sheffield Park of my Bluebell Railway layout...

Hi Fred ! Today I added to my youtube channel a short video of my S870 running alone on the PdF layout with 3600 tracks. She makes four full laps of the circuit. Unfortunately there was NO place for the Steiff Leo and Queen Elizabeth, but a small Lion and a little Bear near Hintertupfingen are anyway present...
This is my second S870 form the passenger set, the first is "sealed" in the showcase in the lobby...
I discovered that two wheels of the carriages (one each) suffer a little of metal fatigue and I avoided to put them on the track. May be the ones on the showcase are still ok...

That's really nice set you got there and I think that's probably the "original Marklin MyWorld" since it doesn't get power from electric rails. The small engine is probably based on the PRR streamlined K4 (I'm getting some Prewar Lionel O gauge vibes) and although it looks a little weird pulling German/European train cars, I think it's interesting.

Hallo Fred !
VG Fritz
